The Anti-Depressant Book was written up in the Washington Post, the review can be read here: https://tinyurl.com/WashingtonPost2018. It is written specifically for teenagers and young adults who are struggling with depression. It offers a drug-free, step-by-step solution to feeling happier quickly and developing healthy habits that will prevent relapse. This book covers the basics of cognitive behavioral therapy for emerging from adolescent depression and staying well. It is filled with paradox, written as if Dr. Towery were having a conversation directly with you, and is neither "preachy" nor dry. There are also brief sections for parents who are struggling with a depressed child. The book was written as a response to the suicide clusters in Palo Alto to help prevent as many suicides as possible. The Anti-Depressant Book can be used as an adjunct to traditional therapy, or by itself, particularly for those with mild to moderate depression. It is irreverent, fun to read, and practical.

Title: One of a kind... Based in scientific research... The authors speaks right to you!
Review: I highly recommend this book to teens and young adults with depression or other problems with their mood. This book is also an excellent resource for physicians and other healthcare providers who care for teens and young adults. I am a physician board certified in preventive medicine with some training and experience in psychiatry and behavioral health. This book is one of a kind in terms of the topics addressed and the target audience. It is also unique in its clear, conversational writing style which engages the reader as if the author were talking directly to you. The author draws from evidence-based approaches in medicine and behavioral health to highlight some of the most effective approaches to help young people suffering from mood problems. This book offers a composite of various modalities which can be effective for treating depression and staying healthy. The basis is clearly cognitive-behavioral therapy which is supported by ample scientific research studies. Additionally, the author effectively weaves in evidence-based approaches involving exercise and sleep.I particularly liked the incorporation of meditation as an approach to help struggling teens and young adults. I have personally dedicated years of my life to exploration of Eastern philosophy including living and learning in the Himalayas to immerse myself in this wisdom. The author authentically details and describes some of these principles in a practical way to benefit the reader.I would strongly recommend this book to teens, young adults, parents, physicians, providers, and anyone interested in evidence-based, effective management of depression and other mood problems. This is a fantastic resource for feeling good and staying healthy in mind, body, and spirit.

Review: Dr. Towery has created a wonderful resource for anyone needing a clear guide to over coming depression. This book is aimed at teenagers and young adults who are ready to take action towards facing their depression and improving their own happiness. The book is meant to be used as a functioning workbook; the reader is encouraged to face their depression straight on by dedicating bits of time each day to do their 'therapy homework'. Dr. Towery writes in a clear and easy way that is motivating and compassionate. The book is appropriate for individuals who identify as having mild to severe depression and thus functions as a true individualized self-help guide. Not only will this book be a useful tool for young adults who are dealing with their depression, but as a former secondary school educator I'd recommend this book as a useful guide to school counselors or parents who are looking for help with how to support the young adults in their lives who are experiencing depression.

Title: this is easily the best book I have ever written
Review: This is probably the most biased review you will ever read about any product since, um, I wrote the book. That said, this is easily the best book I have ever written! It's also the only book I've ever written. In fact, I don't even know if Amazon will allow this review to count since I'm clearly not very objective on this topic. For what it's worth, I expected the book to turn out far worse than it actually did, I'm pretty pleased with the final product. 🙂 Also, I'm kind of excited that this will be the 30th 5-star review and that there have been ONLY 5-star reviews so far!! I mention this because one day there will be myriad 4-star and lower reviews and elderly, past-my-prime me will be able to look back at this and reminisce about the good old days when the reviews were exclusively 5-stars! 😉 I would like to officially thank all those past and future people who have taken the time and energy to write reviews of this book, I appreciate it. I'm kind of excited that this book is out in the world and has the potential to help people even while I'm sleeping and after I die. Cool! I hope you like it. 🙂

Jacob Towery, MD, one of the top Adolescent Pediatricians from Stanford, has just come out with a great new book:"The Anti-Depressant Book: A Practical Guide for Teens and Young Adults to Overcome Depression and Stay Healthy."Highly recommended! Title:
Review: This is a depression self-help book for teenagers and young adult. The author suggests three principles to use the book effectively: (1) Interact with the book (do all the written exercises); (2) Read the book daily when you are somewhat alert. This way, reader will retain the material better. Also, some behavioral therapies and changes will work best if done over several weeks, rather than over one or few days; and (3) Do what the book recommends (therapy homework)The author introduced Cost-Benefit Analysis technique. This exercise is useful to measure Outcome Resistance: if someone could press a magic button and have something be instantly different with no effort at all (such as an end to their depression), what are all the good reasons that they would NOT press that button (page 30-49 for CBA for staying depressed; page 79-82 for committing to consistent and regular sleep; and page 142-150 for skipping vigorous exercise).Another technique is Examine the Evidence – borrowed from David Burns. The technique allows you to defeat thoughts that are untrue, sometimes dramatically changing how you are feeling (page 205-215). The goal of the technique is to get practice checking in with yourself, identifying your emotions at any given time, and then figuring out the thoughts that are triggering those emotions. The last technique is Upward Counterfactuals versus Downward Counterfactuals – borrowed from Behavioral Economics. An Upward Counterfactual is when you compare yourself to someone or something that is better than you in some way. The opposite, Downward Counterfactual is when you think about how much worse things could be or how other people don’t have it as good as you do (page 216-228).
