An integrative approach to support your health and well-being
While Western medicine often relies on a one-size-size-fits-all approach to treating depression, Ayurveda offers an individualized, holistic model that draws upon five thousand years of scientific knowledge and practice to address depression systemically--restoring balance and nourishing mind, body, and spirit.
The Ayurvedic anti-depression protocols outlined in this book can work alone or in concert with conventional therapies to help you develop a tailored plan that meets your unique needs. You'll learn how to identify your inborn and mental constitutions (prakruti and manas prakruti) to better understand the root causes of your condition. This book will empower you to create daily and seasonal routines using dietary adjustments, mind-body training, and herbal remedies to reawaken your body and cultivate the wisdom needed to heal from depression.

Ayurvedic Illness Prevention Tips from Author Eduardo Cardona-Sanclemente
Ayurveda is not only preventive, but curative. For prevention, Ayurveda addresses infections from harmful microorganisms like viruses...but also with the environment affected by them: yes, you. For that reason, here I’ll address ways you can prevent or reduce your chances of infection through a variety of enjoyable activities that you can integrate into your daily routine. Remember that for any changes to your medical activities, you should always consult your physician.
Daily routine: In Ayurveda, daily routines are an integral component of maintaining balance, and set the stage for good health. Let’s take care of our bodies by following a daily routine (called dinacharya):
Wake up early; brush your teeth and scrape your tongue (using a tongue scraper); rinse your mouth and drink hot or warm water.Practice breathing exercises (pranayama) daily.Yoga: asanas or postures such as camel pose, cobra pose, cow pose, boat, bow, and bridge pose, locust, lotus, lion, and Surya Namaskar are recommended.Meditation: sit quietly, connect with the rhythm of your breath and feel your presence. Your acceptance is awareness.Food, diet and herbal remedies: essential to keep a strong digestive fire (agni).
Food:
Warm tea: ginger, cinnamon and cardamom, holy basil, mint to boost your digestion and energy. Similarly, hot water alone or with some bits of ginger—you can sip it throughout the day, or when having your meal. Avoid cold drinks. No ice-cold water or beverage.Warm foods are recommended. By having cold foods, you will suppress your digestive fire (agni). Also, exposure to cold reduces your natural resistance.Reduce the intake of animal products, particularly meat. Meat is heavy to digest, especially later in the day or at dinner time. Instead, enjoy combinations like rice with vegetables and interesting spices. I recommend lots of raw garlic and culinary herbs and spices in cooking, particularly ginger, oregano, thyme, rosemary, cinnamon, turmeric, and cloves.Avoid dairy products, especially cheese, yogurt, or ice cream.
Herbal remedies: Here are some simple herbs and preparations that have been recommended for more than three thousand years by Ayurvedic doctors to address respiratory conditions:
Neem leaves (Azadirachta indica) support a healthy epithelial (skin) barrier in both the abdominal and respiratory tracts.Talisadi: an herbal powder containing long pepper, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon and sugar.Sitopaladi powder can be used preventatively and for the treatment of respiratory conditions. It contains spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and black pepper.

Title: Best exposition of Ayurveda I have read to date - highly relevant is these Covid times.
Review: The list of endorsers and their commentary is incredibly strong, so the book promised a lot. Having read it once through and revisited several sections again, I can say it really does deliver the goods. Itâs a fascinating book on many levels, and I decided to write a longer review 1) because it is a book that deserves an investment of time for those interested in mental health, practical treatments and needing substantial scientific âbackupâ to the efficacy of Ayurveda and 2) to share what I have noted as its unique contributions, some of which cover fundamental gaps in the Western literature of Ayurvedic medical science. There is so much to unpack and digest that is directly related to my professional practice. My copy is full of my post-it notes across the pages. It is like a compendium of Ayurveda (explained from a Western scientific perspective) and Ayurvedic treatments of mental health, and it already feels like a book that will be well-thumbed by me over the coming years. In particular, where it succeeds like no other Ayurvedic text I have read: it has jolted my scientific understanding of how Ayurveda works. Specially on mental health, the explanation of sattva, rajas and tamas is excellent â wide and deep but very practical. As a therapist in private practice, I am seeing an explosion of mental health inquiries, as covid19 has taken a grip, disrupted our routines and left us feeling discombobulated. Many new inquiries are from people with no prior mental health concerns and who consider themselves in good general health, describing falling into a funk, or a fog, as lifelong routines unravel. Particularly for this covid19-related cohort, I believe Ayurveda has a role to play in the targeted treatment of their emerging mental health issues and there is a great deal in this book that addresses this from both a âhowâ and âwhyâ perspective. Throughout, the author emphasizes that the aim is rebalancing â getting back to a state of good general health as the protective umbrella for our physical and mental wellbeing. This is set out in simple, straightforward descriptions of the origins and relationships of physical and mental pathologies, their Ayurvedic treatments and why they work. recognizes we are all different, no one size fits all here: You do what is tailored for you to rebalance. Many of the protocols do not require more than the active participation of the patient (incredibly cost-effective treatment!) and where Ayurvedic medications are required by the author, I have been able to source some of these previously from reputable vendors. Where I encounter some resistance from patients, it is usually rooted in the unease around the lack of a basic modern scientific explanation of what is actually occurring in the body and mind under Ayurvedic protocols. I recognize and share this concern because it is not set out anywhere in the Western Ayurvedic literature, based on literature reviews that I regularly conduct. Coming from a medical training, let me state my long-held concern with the exposition of Ayurveda to a Western audience: virtually all the Ayurvedic books I have read, courses I have completed and conferences I attended explain only the concepts of Ayurveda and how to apply it. None of these sources explain the science - precisely what is happening at a cellular and molecular level.Uniquely, this book goes a long way to filling this fundamental gap. The author takes relevant aphorisms of the Vedic Sanskrit literature and centuriesâ old protocols that underpin Ayurvedic medical practice and explains these from modern molecular and cellular standpoints. One of the many highlights for me is the selection of aphorisms from ancient Ayurvedic texts like Sushruta Samhita that perfectly sum up a state, a process or an inevitability. Given how easily he does it in this book, I hope there will be more general medical textbooks from the author that expand the modern scientific exposition of Ayurveda. It is sorely needed to reassure many patients and therapists who wish to investigate Ayurveda as a complimentary and integrative health system with confidence. There are numerous examples of this in the book but I would highlight: the explanation of the role of mitochondria and the microbiome in our physical and mental wellbeing, and perhaps the most revelatory part that really stunned me: Vata is the explanation of the ârevolutionaryâ discovery of the role of nitric oxide, the molecule of life, at the cellular level. Dr Cardona-Sanclemente explains how Vedic scholars identify as Vata the vasodilatory nitric oxide, fitting like a glove to the role of Vata in cellular life. Now I have read the authorâs explanation of it, it completely makes sense. The book is worth recommending for this section alone, I hope there is more to follow on this. It connects and explains a landmark modern scientific discovery to what Vedic physicians identified thousands of years ago as Vata.On the subject of the doshas, the book has three Ayurvedic tests that should be completed to get the maximum benefit from the book â these are diagnostics used to tailor protocols. These cover Prakruti, Manas Prakruti and Vikruti â but the author has customized these tests, they are much more extensive than the usual Ayurvedic diagnostic tests to be found on various websites and in institutional practice. Here again, he has significantly extended the current tools used for Ayurvedic diagnosis, and I will be incorporating these extensive tests â with attribution, of course! â into my work. I will be examining further specific treatment protocols set out in detail in this book with a view to incorporating them into my professional work addressing mental health in a more directed way and with the comfort of the scientific explanation of Ayurveda I have always desired but had not been able to find previously.I highly recommend this book, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I congratulate the author and applaud the publisher who did not chop the book to a typical 150 pages but let the author fully develop his themes, explanations and treatment recommendations in detail. Well done all and thank you Dr Cardona-Sanclemente, I hope there is more to come.

Title: Terrific explanation on Ayurveda and mental health
Review: I bought this book initially to see the author's take on depression and mental health from an Ayurvedic standpoint but I have to say there is so much more in this book. It is worth getting for the Prakruti and Manas diagnostics - once you have these, it is is much easier to navigate through Ayurveda and understand treatments and herbal remedies. They are effectively your body and mind roadmaps. Also the result hold up a mirror to yourself - there is no escaping when you have to assess your own physical and mental condition. The author's style is authoritative but easy to digest, some passages are (necessarily) technical. I "get" how Ayurveda works so much better now as a result of it being explained in modern medical terminology. I recommend the book wholeheartedly, for those who are interested in Ayurveda's treatment of mental health issues but also for those who come from our Western scientific modalities and are open to the explanations of Ayurveda in a modern scientific vernacular.

Title: Important book for Mental Health providers
Review: By reading Dr Cardona-Sanclementeâs book (and as a clinical counselor working on mental health were counseling for depression focuses more on present behaviors, images, thoughts, believes and feelings, and their impact on peopleâs lives), I found that the whole Ayurvedic approach outlined in the book is a very useful model. I have started using the Ayurvedic body and mind tests for determining constitutions (prakruti and manas tests, part 2- included in the book) for my clinical counseling sessions. Even if it is early days, I found they are a very good tool for understanding the way a person behaves, deal with emotional problems and how much it is related to their individual constitutions. It is a great tool to understand a person's cognitive processes and I hope to master better their individual application along the way and apply it consistently with my patients. At a more personal level, Dr. Cardona-Sanclementeâs book part 3 â Get better using Ayurveda, open a completely new vision of how easy and practical the Ayurvedic practices and methodologies can be applied and integrated into my daily life. One of the big pluses is the fascinating Ayurvedic understanding of nutrition and diet described in a simple and clear way to the reader. It was completely new to me giving such a different view of food in general and its benefits, from the concept of the constituents in terms of different types of energetical functions and the relevant connection to their six tastes and its applications on meal preparation and much more. Itâs all made sense when I apply it to my daily cooking preparations and rejects our actual digestive functions. In addition, the design, illustration, and bookâs format are beautiful. As a visual learner, I found it very easy to understand and highly enjoyable.I strongly recommend this book: It is written in a way that anybody can enjoy and follow the Ayurvedic principles and practices. By applying its various protocols you can get a great support framework for people suffering from the occasionally blue days, those dealing with depression as well as professional mental health supporters like me.

Review: There has been an avalanche of wellbeing books during Covid-19 lockdown but most fail to deliver more than sound bites. So I approached this book having high expectations from an author with a noteworthy academic and medical background. It delivered. As somebody working at the NHS for more than thirty years, I really value Dr Cardona-Sanclementeâs approach to healthcare, having used Ayurveda for my own wellbeing. He emphasises in a straightforward and understandable way what is the critical point - the pathway to a sustained recovery from mental or physical illness opens up when the patient is an active participant in their recover, and his book offers many easy and practical ways to support depression in an integrative way. He explains it in a scientific way that is easy to follow. He makes the reader focus on what is important for recovery and helps us identify key habits or behaviours that we need to address because they prevent us restoring a healthy balance to our lives and in some cases worsen our physical and mental condition. Surely, the time of depending on pharmaceutical solutions in a passive way is over, given historical results show us that they ultimately make little difference and are not curative and have many side effects. Dr Cardona-Sanclemente presents a fresh and invigorating perspective on mental and allied physical wellbeing from an Ayurvedic viewpoint but with a medical scientific foundation. Recommended.

Review: The content is general ayurvedic sutras. One can get them free online. Don't waste money of Rs1600.not even worth Rs 500. Nothing specific for depression only ordinary guideliness like eat good food, sleep early , if you are constipated take triphala, pancha karma, etc.. Don't fall for fake reviews and waste your money. You can consult a ayurvedic physician and he will give you much more details than th book (and the treatment))

Review: This book provides an excellent introduction to Ayurveda as well as an exploration of depression. With a light touch, Dr Cardona-Sanclemente manages to bring together ancient Ayurvedic wisdom and a current understanding of allopathic medicine. He takes the reader on a gentle journey, exploring their awareness of themselves and examining how an understanding of Ayurveda, and the use of its treatments and practices may address specific ills as well as helping to build a balanced and positive mental state. This book is particularly apt at the present time, when much of the world in increasingly troubled by chronic illness, mental health problems and, of course, by the current pandemic. This book provides guidelines on how we can take better care of ourselves and establish a more healthy and sustainable way of living.
