Learn how the modern insurance industry functions and dysfunctions.

With Pay Up!, attorney Chip Merlin exposes the bad faith practices of insurance companies that take advantage of their own customers.

The claims process has become so automated that legitimate claims are denied without ever being seen by human eyes. Exceptions and exclusions are buried within small print that can bury your claim. Many claims departments operate under a culture of paranoia in which legitimate claims are denied, sometimes accidentally, sometimes not. Cost-cutting measures birth “self-serve” policies that force the policyholder to do the insurer’s job. Insurance lobbyists are so enmeshed in the political process that it can be hard to know whose side industry regulators are on.

Commercial and individual policyholders pay premiums with the understanding that insurers will pay claims fairly, fully, and promptly. It’s time for the insurance industry to Pay Up!.

Review: For anybody who doesn't already know who Chip is, he and his firm have fought tooth and nail against Insurance Carriers (before the majority of us realized what was going on). Title: I highly recommend this book!
Review: A good trial lawyer must be able to tell a story, and Chip Merlin is a great trial lawyer. In Pay Up, Chip tells the true story of the unfair tactics of insurance companies and lets us know how to fight those tactics. Chip presents the human side of the insurance claims process and gives plain language advice to property owners through wisdom learned from his 30+ years of fighting for his clients. Every chapter ends with practical tips on “How To Protect Yourself”.Throughout Pay UP, we learn about different ways insurance companies deny or underpay claims. Chip details the unnecessarily complex policy language, the over-played and often insincere concern of insurance companies about fraud, the influence of politics, the eroding coverage in policies, and other tools insurance companies use so that they don’t have to “Pay Up.” The last few chapters deal with the different players in the process and offer a “who’s who” and “what’s what” guide to a claim. What makes this book an interesting read-- and more than just another book about insurance-- are the people we meet along the way. We meet Ann and Ray, Jim and Jay, Doris the therapist, Suzanne Harris, and Dick Tutwiler the public adjuster, among others. We discover the injustices of the system and become armed to combat them. from reading these anecdotes. Through the telling of these tales, however, we also meet Chip Merlin: in his effort to teach us, he reveals his genuine empathy for his clients and his passion for the fight.Take a rainy afternoon and read this book. You will be glad you did.
