Title: Soulful and bluesy
Review: The Spencer Davis Group - Eight Gigs A WeekExcellent 2 disc set from the Steve Winwood years. Everybody has heard the few tracks which get airplay on oldies stations and are frequently added to 60's compilations. This disc covers another 50 tracks which are not played frequently and what a delightful surprise. Somehow the SDG slipped through the cracks in my collection and I never went very deep into this group. I am very glad I dug in to this collection which features soul, R&B covers, instrumental burners, blues and a few rock oriented tracks. The versatility of the group surprised me and Winwood's vocals are very soulful for the young age he was during this time period. I hate to say it but I think this may be the best stuff he ever did. If you enjoy the mid 60's R&B flavored music and don't have a good SDG collection, this is highly recommended!

Title: Essential British Blues-Inflected Rock
Review: The Spencer Davis group was among the finest groups in the 1960s, featuring the soulful vocals of Steve Winwood, backed by a strong band, all of whom played well, and supported him with effective background vocals. The group is best known for "Gimme Some Lovin'" and for many people, that may be the only track they have ever heard from the band. The version on this album is NOT the version you know, which was created by the record company with backing vocals from Traffic, the band Winwood formed after leaving Spencer Davis. The standout track is their first hit, recorded when Winwood was a mere 17 years old, "Keep on Running" with its fuzztone lead guitar, an insistent, driving rhythm, and the soaring vocals provided by Winwood. The other top tracks include "I'm a Man," "Back into My Life Again," "Somebody Help Me," and "Strong Love." Winwood's version of "Georgia on My Mind" sound eerily like that of Ray Charles. There are many, many good tracks on this album, which is a complete collection of all the songs from the band when Winwood was lead singer. According to the liner notes, the band chose the name Spencer Davis because he was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews. As a complete collection, there are definitely some weak tracks, but they are outnumbered by all the good ones. This collection may be too comprehensive for a casual fan, or someone new to the group, who might best be served by a single CD of the greatest hits. Then again this compilation costs only a bit more than one of those single CDs and might be worth getting, just in case you get hooked on their music, which is likely to happen.

Title: Amazon's Choice Is Spot On
Review: This Spencer Davis double cd with its sights on Steve Winwood is an unadulterated legacy of the band's formidable prowess from 1964 to 1966. They leave no stone unturned as they deftly mined and covered the rhythm and blues songs of their time. In addition, the group penned their own songs which are also included among these fifty-one tracks. Winwood's gritty, visceral vocals and the band's distinctive driving sound are emblematic of the soulful genre that throaty American artists were playing and recording in the clubs, studios and venues in the USA. "Play that funky music" is an apt declaration of homage for the music this celebratory British band brought into being during the musically great decade of the sixties. The songs on "Eight Gigs A Week . . ." are a tribute to these talented musicians who certainly left their unique blues based, earthy mark on the songs they performed to perfection.

Title: Amazing value.
Review: Despite about 2 or 3 songs I don't particularly care for, the incarnation of the Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood was simply amazing. And with 51 songs on these 2 discs, it's more than worth the ridiculously low price some very good sellers are giving it away for. Wether they performed covers or original songs, their performances were always top notch soulful blues. Little Stevie's voice was and still is incredible, and many songs will make you wonder if it was really possible that a white teenager could sing with such a mature voice. Spencer Davis has a very good blues voice too, but in about half of the songs he leads, he sounds somewhat unenthusiastic. Still, the musical, historical and monetary value of this release should make it a must buy for any fans of the group, or blues in general.Even the very few average songs at best can't bring down the perfect 5 stars rating.

Review: In 1963, Davis went to the Golden Eagle in Birmingham to see the Muff Wood Jazz band, a traditional jazz band featuring Muff Winwood and his younger brother, Steve Winwood. Davis persuaded them to join him and drummer Pete York as the Rhythm and Blues Quartet. Davis performed on guitar, vocals and harmonica, Steve Winwood on guitar, organ and vocals, Muff Winwood on bass and Pete York on drums.[8] Reportedly, they adopted the name the Spencer Davis Group because Davis was the only band member who agreed to press interviews, allowing the other band members to sleep longer. They had hits in 65/66/ and 67 mostly all with Steve Winwood on lead vocals. They continued for 2 yrs after Winwood left to form the band "Traffic". This 2 CD collection is probably the best package you'll get to really sample their sound (not just the Hits), which was great rockin english R&B /Blues / Soul .

Gli estimatori avranno certamente i vinil in mono (come me).
