Roger Mudd joined CBS in 1961, and as the congressional correspondent, became a star covering the historic Senate debate over the 1964 Civil Right Act. Appearing at the steps of Congress every morning, noon, and night for the twelve weeks of filibuster, he established a reputation as a leading political reporter. Mudd was one of half a dozen major figures in the stable of CBS News broadcasters at a time when the network's standing as a provider of news was at its peak.

In The Place to Be, Mudd tells of how the bureau worked: the rivalries, the egos, the pride, the competition, the ambitions, and the gathering frustrations of conveying the world to a national television audient in thirty minutes minus commercials. It is the story of a unique TV news bureau, unmatched in its quality, dedication, and professionalism. It shows what TV journalism was once like and what it's missing today.

Title: What's new?
Review: Since I have been in the news business off and on for most of 50 years Roger Mudd speaks my language. He appears to have told the story without distortion or needless rancor. I suspect there have been times when he has had to sit down and shut up but he is gentle about them. It's a nice book and will open a new world for many people. It took away any yearnings I had to go for the Big Time.

Title: the place to be
Review: enjoyed very much. brought back historical memories of the times mudd worked for cbs. i thought his candidness of the politics and internal workings inside cbs was great. also enjoyed the competitiveness between the reporters, which made their reporting all the much better for viewers.this book provides a link from what television news reporting was then to what it is today.

Title: Disappointing
Review: Mr. Mudd was one of the better intellects in the CBS News pantheon of correspondence in the network's hey day. The book is anecdotal trip through Mr. Mudd's career with his considerable accomplishments. What is missing is what he is capable of, perspective and insights into his time, the culture of TV News and how it helped shape an era when there were few choices for news.

Title: History Lives
Review: Roger Mudd, who was with CBS News in its "glory days" is singularly able to tell the facts about CBS News and how it covered living history during one of the most significant periods of American history. I also worked in the Washington bureau of CBS News during half of these years and know that Mudd's book is accurate, fair, and tremendously interesting. I could hardly put it down. For the assassinations, civil rights struggles, space effort, and elections, there was more to cover than one could conjure, and CBS News did it well with outstanding stars and team players.

Title: The early days of real TV
Review: Roger Mudd really captures the early days of our growing dependence on television news. I was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives 50 years ago and I remember the live TV commercials and the big reels of film. The book does a fine job of moving the reader through these early years and into the present. I promise, the fact that I am mentioned in the book has nothing to do with the comments. It is a good book. Jack Edwards

Title: I Spent most of the day reading the new Roger Mudd book ...
Review: You need to move it up your priority list to MUST READ status. You'll understand the world of News and Media and appreciatewhat reporters and anchors of "Integrity" have to face to be "great"and to stay on the air!!!! I Never could figure out why he (Roger) didn't replace Cronkite; now I know! The "Black Rock" turned varing shades of "bean-pusher grey" after Mr. Paley died. Mr. & Mrs. Moonves' CBS pales by comparison to Mr. Paley's BLACK ROCK!
