HINDSIGHT is one man's remarkably revealing story about sex and relationships, on the silver screen and in his private life. Howie Gordon (screen name Richard Pacheco) was an award-winning actor during The Golden Age of Porn, whose memoir does not duck the question, "What about love?" With charm, passion, wit, and what may best be described as a crude elegance, Gordon's story takes us back to the fabled Baby Boomer era, when erotic films took a dramatic step closer to mainstream entertainment in America. His memoir recounts scenes with Marilyn Chambers, Georgina Spelvin, Seka, Annette Haven, Kay Parker and many others. This was the heyday of John Holmes, John Leslie, Jamie Gillis and Anthony Spinelli, and they are all characters in what may prove to be the finest inside story to ever come out of the fascinating world of Adult Film during its Golden Age. Ultimately, HINDSIGHT is a surprising love story: here in a triumph over incredible odds, is an unlikely victory for true love, common sense, and the American way. Full of pictures and high spirits - this memoir is a great read, whether you know the world of porn, or are just a curious reader. "It was the time of storytelling with an X Rating, and there's no one better to tell this story than my friend Howie Gordon." - Whoopi Goldberg "Howie Gordon writes about life as a porn star with more honesty, integrity and humor than any other porn star, ever! You will laugh, cry, and fall in love. I hope his book gets made into a movie, because it will be a one-of-a-kind blockbuster." - Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D.
Post Porn Modernist "Mark Twain meets Don Juan-a delectable fusion of brains and balls!" - Dr. Marianna Beck, Ph.D. The Material Culture of Sex

Title: A lucky man's splendid book
Review: I suspect that every healthy young straight male who ever watched his proper share of pornographic movies has suffered pangs of envy, and entertained fantasies of changing places with the lucky guy having sex on-screen. Imagine having sex with an exciting variety of beautiful women---and getting paid for it. That is most surely a situation devoutly to be wished. On the screen the sex seems much hotter than most of us regularly encounter in the so-called "real world" off-screen to which fate has consigned us. The real people who provide those viscerally inspiring electric shadows are themselves also consigned to the "real world"----even when making those movies. This was especially apparent back in the 1970s-80s "Golden Age of Porn," when many of the movies tried to have plots, and when porn stars tended to look like real people, and when acting was still a useful career skill. Maybe it's just my crabby old man's myopia, but computer age porn stars don't have opportunity to show personality. Things were different in the good old days. Only a person without imagination could watch pornography from that "Golden Age" and not wonder about the off-screen lives of the performers.HINDSIGHT, the memoirs of Howie Gordon (aka "Richard Pacheco," aka "Dewy Alexander") satisfies at least some of that curiosity. Having sex on camera with such "Golden Age" stars as Annette Haven, Georgina Spelvin, Veronica Hart, Marilyn Chambers, Jessie St. James, Loni Sanders, Seka, and Serena could apparently be as wonderful as possibly imagined. But having sex on a busy movie set, with all the mood breaking delays, interruptions, distractions, hot lights, and equipment failures could also be a bullet sweating, ego shredding ordeal of performance anxiety. Howie Gordon is wonderfully candid about his own occasional struggles to get (and keep) it up, get it on, and get it off on schedule. In fact, it struck this reader that Howie Gordon is remarkably candid about everything--- which might displease some and amuse others of the people featured in HINDSIGHT.Don't look for vicious attacks on old friends, or the settling of old scores. Howard seems to like most of the people he knew in the adult film industry. And he admits that he fell---quite understandingly---in at least temporary love with many of his female co-stars. This is a rather extraordinary admission for a married man to make, and all through his adult film career Howie Gordon was married to his wise, strong, and extraordinarily understanding wife, Carly---his anchor, and the most fascinating woman in the book. And that is quite a distinction, because this book is full of interesting women. Unlike the stereotypical porn stud, Gordon seems to genuinely like and respect women.HINDSIGHT is more than the story of a rather unusual but apparently successful marriage---though it is that. It is more than a book about the adult film industry back when porn was still shot on film, and back when there was at least some plot and acting to go with the sex. It is that, but it is more. Howie Gordon is a good, witty writer, and the miscellaneous photos, drawings, notes from the "Gordon Archive" actually ad to the book. Such personal indulgences usually detract from a memoir, but not here. And then, there are also the photos from the archives of VCX.com.HINDSIGHT is a remarkable memoir. And along with it, I recommend Georgina Spelvin's THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT---the cover of which is featured in HINDSIGHT. Decades from now they will both be prime source material for historians, and the scholars are going to enjoy them as much as you will.

Title: One Of My Favorite Books Of All Time
Review: Through years 1-3 of college at Ohio State, I worked at a very upscale adult movie theatre owned by at that time film producer Lew Sher as the hours were flexible and there was ample time for studying during the slower matinee periods. During that time I met many of the “Golden Age of Porn” stars during their personal appearances and learned to truly appreciate films that would eventually reflect a very unique period in cinema history that will likely never be repeated, one that has only increased its devoted fan base and critical analysis over time. As the legendary Veronica Hart has said, “We didn’t make sex films. We made films with sex.” One of the most handsome, most likeable and most talented performers of the era was Richard Pacheco (a/k/a Howie Gordon), whose incredible roster of film credits included working with pretty much every A-list adult film director and co-star of the time. I was therefore thrilled to discover “Hindsight,” absolutely the most comprehensive, veracious documentation of this epoch yet published. Nearly 700 pages and never once a dull moment. Beyond the insight into the industry, also an accurate and fascinating testament to the changing moral perceptions and behaviors of six decades of American history, from the beatific free love of the 60’s through the fearful 80’s (Mr. Gordon’s career ended at his wife’s insistence as AIDS-related panic swept the country) and beyond. I’ve read through a handful of other accounts of the industry by its former adult stars but this was by far the most compassionate as Mr. Gordon offers no apologies nor regrets and is also generous to and appreciative of his former co-stars. I’ve read this one twice (yes, all 700 pages) and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Title: Funny, Honest, Sexy... What a ride!
Review: First I want to say that I have never met Howie Gordon, aka Richard Pacheco in real life. The first time I saw him in one of his films ("Irresistible" to be exact) was when I was 15, when I "borrowed" it from my parents without them knowing. It was he who made me realize how amazing sex can be as his scenes were being beautifully acted and added realism and sensibility to on film sex.Years later, I found myself fascinated about the golden age of porn era and learned Howie was working on his book for decades. I was so happy to learn he actually made it and released it to the public to enjoy.About the book.. it's a total fun read, funny at times, serious at times, sexy most of the time... lots of photos from his own archive that added so much to the reading experience. I felt like I am on a journey with Howie, like I am reliving his life with him, like a buddy next to him sharing his thoughts, his doubts, his ups and downs, laughing with him, arguing with him...Boy, what a ride! he was able with his writing to take me away with him on his journey. It is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in years! For the ones who look for the behind the scenes porn film "dirt" there's plenty of that too, but in an honest straight forward way from Howie's prospective. He goes back to his movies and one by one describes what happened during the shooting and what happened when the cameras weren't rolling, and yes... lots of behind the scenes footage!! Priceless!! Lots of it was juicy and some facts really surprised me about some of the porn actors of that time, but Howie wrote it in a way we, the readers, can feel how it really went while shooting a porno film, and how he was a unique character in that industry. There are things in the book for everyone! You may not agree with the paths Howie chose in his life, but his thoughts, feelings and agendas are universal. This book is worth any penny spent!!Truly recommended with all my heart!! I loved it!!

Review: A great read. It is written with warmth and humanity. The writer is humorous, self deprecating and entertaining. He humanises a world that the little prigs and prudes always want to condemn as evil, and where all the women are drug addicted 'victims' of male violence.

Review: I will say one thing; Howie is honest. Very honest about his all too occasional inability to perform. Now, if you're a porn actor, this is surely the number one requirement - after not being grossly ugly. He is very likeable and you will find it difficult not to warm to the man. If you were alive to adult movies in the 80's and remember the American porn of the time - you know, the stuff that featured acting and plot and production values etc. - this book will bring back many happy and wistful unshaved memories. Ohhhh, Annette Haven...
