A "captivating and bittersweet" novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Summer of '69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades—but this could be the summer that changes everything (People).

When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.

There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?

Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere—through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise—until Mallory learns she's dying.

Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Title: A beach read with relevant and deep themes
Review: WOW. This is the best book I've read in a LONG time. I'm absolutely blown away.Mallory's aunt leaves her a cottage in Nantucket when she unexpectedly passes away. At a point in her life where Mallory is able to pick up and relocate, she decides to take advantage of the opportunity and move to Nantucket. Once on the island, she falls in love with the beach, the slower pace of life, and the cottage that brings back many happy memories.Mallory's brother Cooper is getting married and he wants to have a little getaway weekend with his friends. When he suggests staying with Mallory over Labor Day weekend, she's elated and more than happy to host Cooper and his two groomsmen, Fray and Jake. Mallory's BFF also decides to crash that weekend when she learns that her ex-boyfriend, Fray will be on the island.Cooper's fiance makes it her mission to ruin Cooper's weekend and he doesn't even last the day, refusing to let a weekend with the guys ruin his marriage before it starts. Leland, Fray's ex, decides to play with his emotions - making out with him at the beginning of the night and then leaving him for a group of friends later in the weekend. More charmed by her NYC friends' money and power, she ditches Mallory too. Fray, upset and drunk, nearly drowns and calls it a weekend as well, leaving Jake and Mallory alone. And so begins their love affair. At first, the weekend is fun and flirty. Two young adults enjoying summer and each other's company. As the weekend fast approaches its end, the two make a "same time next year" pact they agree to hold to no matter what. The rules are that they don't talk during the year at all unless someone gets engaged, gets married, has a child, or dies.Every Labor Day weekend for twenty-eight years, Jake and Mallory hold to their promise. As life throws wrenches every which way to interfere with their plans, nothing stops them from their three days of bliss each Labor Day weekend. Even when they both have a child, Jake gets married, Mallory commits to other men, and Jake's wife enters politics, Labor Day weekend in theirs. It was amazing to me how I strongly I felt for these characters. Hildebrand weaves a rich story full of history and passion. Even though the premise was horrifying to me (cheating on your spouse every single year with the same woman), I was still pulled in by the romanticism of the idea. Hildebrand used a variety of strategies to keep us rooting for Mallory and Jake, even when we weren't necessarily on board with what they were doing. I particularly loved how each summer opened up with what was going on that year in the world. The fun pop culture references brought me back and some of the points were well place foreshadowing tools. I also really liked the political aspect, especially that there were ribbons of truth but the actual politicians were fictitious. This was a beach read but it wasn't light. With strong themes such as infidelity, loss of a loved one, divorce, the #metoo movement, feminism, and so much more, this is a fantastic book for a bookclub. I can't recommend this book enough and it's without a doubt my favorite Hildebrand novel to date!

Title: Best One Yet
Review: I haven’t read an Elin Hilderbrand book that I didn’t like. This one is my favorite so far. She has such a talent for developing characters, even the peripheral ones. So good.

Title: Same Time, Next Year
Review: This is only my second book from this author out of the 25 books she's written. I thought that she was mainly a romance author but her last two books are more women's fiction along with romance. This book is a perfect beach read where you can suspend your questions about what could have gone wrong with their yearly plans and just believe that it all worked out.Mallory and Jake meet on Labor Day weekend 1993 in Nantucket. Jake was her brother's best friend and even though she had talked to Jake on the phone, they'd never met. When the whole weekend goes wrong and everyone but Jake leaves, they begin a romance that will last for 28 summers but they will only meet once a year on Labor Day weekend. Each year of the 28 years is a separate chapter and each chapter starts out with what was going on in the world the year. Each chapter highlights the Labor Day weekend romance of these two. No matter what happens -- marriages, romances, babies - they spend that weekend together and then say goodbye for another year. It was an interesting premise based on the movie Same Time, Next Year but their romance actually affected their entire year - it kept Mallory from having a lasting relationship with anyone else and it caused Jake not to give his marriage all of his attention because he was always thinking about Mallory. How were they able to keep this a secret from friends and family for 28 years or was their secret eventually uncovered? What I liked about this book - I enjoyed the setting of Nantucket with the beach right outside the door and quirky restaurants in town. I enjoyed the friendship that Mallory has with her brother and with her best friend on the island. I enjoyed the love that Mallory has for her island, for her job and for her son. I also liked the chapter headings of what we were talking about that particular year. What I didn't like about it - You can call it a romance but it basically was adultery on Jake's part and that didn't seem to bother either of them. And I definitely didn't like Mallory's best friend when she was growing up who acted more like an enemy than a friend.Overall, it was a fun read - perfect for a hot day on the beach.

Title: A really good book
Review: Filled with flawed people like we all are. I thought this book was very well written and describes quite well of the loves, and challenges so common to all of us who have lived our lives past age 30 without hesitation.

Title: 4⭐️ Read!
Review: Conflicted right now…. 🤔 Let me marinate on this for a bit. BRB.Okay let me review this because well why not talk my thoughts out… what can go wrong right??? 🫣Solid 4⭐️ but I feel like I was expecting a higher rating after all the hype. Maybe it was my mindset or maybe it was just not my taste and I need to read another book to get a better feel for the Hilderbrand World.I have to say I’m not a huge fan of forbidden love/secret love affair trope. It’s just not my cup of tea usually. I was really vibing with it for the first half and then I think it was really losing its appeal to me. I don’t know?!I do however love the way each summer opened with a throwback to that year! It was super fun and brought back memories for sure! The ending was emotional for sure. Definitely left me with a “seriously” moment but I know there is a novella or sequel so I will probably read it just for some closure. Solid read overall…. I’m just being picky I think!

Review: What a beautiful story. Clearly it touches on issues that are morally divisive so i can imagine some will maintain the high ground - but at the heart of it there is an enormous amount of love and a recognition that people are not perfect. People are flawed. Some people may say it’s selfish to stay in a marriage that isn’t working, but in this story there is also bravery & selflessness in staying on the path you know isn’t meant for you, because you want to do the right thing. I loved every bit, I felt the summer glory of Nantucket with the food & sun, I felt the deep love between Mallory & Jake.Beautiful book. Beautiful writing.
