“Bird brain” is a compliment when you learn that New Caledonia crows can outsmart scientists! Engaging narrative nonfiction coupled with beautiful photographs makes for an excellent addition to the award-winning Scientists in the Field series.
One of the biggest differences between humans and animals is the ability to understand cause and effect, yet New Caledonian crows can comprehend this concept. The crows’ intelligence opens the larger discussions of how brain size affects intellect and evolutionary intelligence. If crows perceive more than we realized, can they outsmart the scientists?
Readers will see crows learning how to use extensive tools crafted from the natural world around them without any outside influence. When these crows are placed in a controlled environment, they are able to solve complex problems with an ease that is almost uncanny. In this new paperback format, the creators of The Frog Scientist take us to a beautiful Pacific island where a lively cast of both crows and scientists is waiting to amuse and enlighten us.

Title: Crow Smarts is Smart Science and a Fascinating Read
Review: As the name implies, the Scientists in the Field series profiles the work of scientists currently conducting cutting-edge research on topics of interest to upper middle grade readers somewhere in our fascinating universe. After reading only a few titles, Scientists in the Field became my favorite series--quite a feat for informational text! Not only are the topics and locales fascinating and diverse, so are the scientists profiled. What a gift to be able to provide role models that show science is for everyone. As a fan of this series, I couldn't have been more thrilled when I learned several years ago that Pamela S. Turner, author of The Frog Scientist--the book that originally made me fall in love with this series--was working on a book about crows, one of my favorite creatures. I stalked the sciencemeetsadventure.com blog, emailed encouraging words to the author, and pre-ordered my copy as soon as I could. Despite that tremendous build-up, amazingly, I was not at all disappointed.Crow Smarts: Inside the Brain of the World's Brightest Bird will be a valuable resource as I teach 10-year-olds about inquiry and experimentation, asking rich questions, designing experiments, and brain science. I will also use it as a mentor text as we learn about reading and writing informational text. It provides compelling examples of making the topic relatable by focusing on individual cases, using a sequential structure, descriptive writing, and attention-grabbing chapter/section titles. As with all Scientists in the Field books, the photography and the non-fiction text features are unparalleled. Each book is an in-depth study of specialized research, miraculously made appealing enough to engage both 10-14 year-olds and their teachers. Don't miss Crow Smarts: Inside the Brain of the World's Brightest Bird.

Title: A wonderful book
Review: This is a wonderful book, by far the best of all the books I've read on the subject. The pictures are amazing. The text makes the scientific experiments very easy to understand, and easy to get excited about. If there were ten stars available, that's how I would rate it!
