JAMES BEARD AWARD NOMINEE • Physician and Plant Based Artist creator Dr. Sheil Shukla celebrates Indian cuisine with 100 stunningly photographed vegan recipes that utilize fresh, healthy produce to capture the indelible flavors of India

“This is wholesome, exciting cooking that just so happens to not include animal products. You won’t miss them.”―The New York Times, A Best Cookbook of 2022

“Cinematically lit, larger-than-life images will have you eating with your eyes long before the dal hits the pan.”―NPR Books We Love

India is home to a vibrant tapestry of culinary traditions―and to more vegetarians than anywhere else in the world. It’s also where Dr. Sheil Shukla learned to love traditional Gujarati fare, cooking alongside his adored ba (grandmother) over summers in Mumbai.

During his medical training, Dr. Shukla discovered the power of plant-based nutrition to prevent and manage chronic illness―and so began his mission to reinvent the classic vegetarian dishes of his heritage.

Plant-Based India presents over 100 completely vegan recipes for shak (spiced vegetable dishes), dal (legume stews), rotli (flatbreads), bhat (rice dishes), and more. From a comforting Palak Tofu that transcends dairy-based paneer, to vegan Nan, festive Navratan Rice, hearty Dal Makhani, and summery Chocolate Chai Mousse with Berries, these are recipes from the heart―filled with nourishing ingredients at their seasonal best. 120 color photographs

Title: Great pics & great recipes
Review: The pictures are outstanding and the instructions are clear & easy to follow. And, the recipes are outstanding. But you need access to an Indian grocer for all the ingredients & spices. Also: he uses oil to sauté spices. So I replace it with low sodium veggie broth and ignore his recommendation to add salt. Otherwise I follow the recipes.

Title: GREAT Cookbook!
Review: I made two recipes from this cookbook tonight and both were FANTASTIC recipes! I learned to cook Gujerati food from friends 40 years ago so I was really excited about this vegan book in particular. I really like the way the book is laid out, how well the recipes are explained, and how well the recipes work! Definitely buy this book for yourself and gift a copy to a friend. It's that good.

Title: Gorgeous Book
Review: I purchased the book as a gift based on Amazon reviews. I was impressed when the book arrived, the colors and photos are gorgeous, it made me want a copy of my own. We tried the Creamy Chili Pasta the day the book came. We loved the recipe and are excited to try others. I am confident the recipient will love her copy as much as I do. I originally purchased from Amazon, unfortunately it arrived in a plastic envelope with no padding or protection and the binding was damaged. Of course there was no problem with returning the damaged book, in my experience Amazon is always good about returns. However, I decided I didn't want the hassle of ordering again from Amazon and receiving another damaged book, so I ordered the replacement from Barnes and Noble. It cost me more, but if it is properly shipped it will be worth it.

Title: Picture for every recipe
Review: Just received my book today, haven’t tried any recipes yet, but everything looks delicious. As someone who doesn’t regularly cook Indian food I will definitely need to stock up in traditionally used Indian spices. The author makes this very easy as he has a table of commonly used spices, herbs, legumes, etc. Other than that the recipes seem pretty approachable. One big plus is that every recipe has a picture accompanying it.

Review: I've only made one recipe from this book, but I loved how it explained to do it with my instant pot as an alternative option, and the result was DELICIOUS. Also, a big surprise to me was that this book is showing us how to cook plant-based, whole-food, but also reasonably HEALTHY food... not plant-based but relying on tons of extra oil etc! So, for me, this book is perfect. And again, I must emphasize how delicious the results have been thus far!
