If faced with the absurd dilemma of picking one album to represent the meaning of rock music, the Rolling Stones compilation HOT ROCKS--which collects most of their commercially and artistically successful songs from 1964 to 1971--would certainly be in the running. A two-CD set (originally released as a double LP), HOT ROCKS' 22 tracks each have the ring of historical inevitability about them; more importantly, of course, they are great tunes. From the soulful wailing of "Time Is On My Side" (the only non-Jagger/Richards original here) to the nervous pop shuffle of "Mother's Little Helper" through the Indian-influenced psychedelia of "Paint It Black" and the gospel-inflected strains of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," it is hard to argue with the power of this music. Many of these songs have been tattooed on the cultural psyche--the amped-up rock nirvana of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Satisfaction" (with their indelible guitar riffs), for example--but everything here sparkles and thrills: the mod clatter of "19th Nervous Breakdown," the in-your-face sass of "Brown Sugar." At their very best, as on "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Gimme Shelter," the Stones prove capable not only of creating compressed rock masterpieces, but of making music emblematic of their entire generation (and future generations). The Rolling Stones are often referred to as "the World's Greatest Rock Band." HOT ROCKS makes that claim hard to dispute.

Title: The best compilation of the Rolling Stones in a single CD set that you can buy
Review: I have had this for 30 years and after the CDs finally were so scratched I couldnât use them anymore. I bought this one to replace it.If you like the stones, itâs the best set of the best music ever madeAnd I saw Mick Jagger and the stones in Atlanta this year you would never guess his age heâs got just as much energy. It was an incredibly good concert.. If you like the stones, donât miss a chance to see them if you want to travel back in time and be young again

Title: This Album Demands being played as loudly as Possible
Review: "Minight Rambler" is about as creepy as it gets and the brilliance by inserting certain musical instruments in just the right places makes this great tune a excellent listen. None of that Zombie, chilling nonsense written just to scare you for frightening's sake, But a real piece of work that reminds us, locking the suburbia doors at night is a splendid idea. That's what makes it so good. Keep listening from side one track one, all the way to "Wild Horses." Feel everything from the sweat, pain, truth, beauty, and passion of one who is not going to denied his Woman. Love is the major theme thruought this collection. OK, so "Sympathy for the Devil" didn't please my Pastor in the least. I don't think he got it. The others, and especially, "You can't always get What You Want" will last well unto forever. Using the Boy's Choir in the beginning and climaxing with Jagger belting out the lyrics while the piano is playing a little finalizing medley is again, nothing short of brilliance. Play it very loud, and sing along. No one will hear the off-tune singing while you're busily embracing and being wrapped up by the song. And for us air guitar afficiandos, "Street Fighting Man" will get any 60+ years old guys pumpin', even if you can get your country and western heads outta their recliners. The lyrics of any tune were diligently written for the right person, and Jagger absolutely nailed it every time. Rock on!

Title: Want to Know About The Rolling Stones? START HERE.
Review: Even if it was released from dubious circumstances (see the story of the Stones and their ex-manager, Allen Klein), Hot Rocks is an essential greatest hits album that almost has a reputation as something far greater. One of their best selling albums, the album goes through the singles, hits and great rocking tracks of mainly the Brian Jones period with great aplomb. You get tracks like Satisfaction, Playing With Fire, and As Tears Go By. You get a small glimpse of what was to be the Stones future as well with tracks like Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Woman. There is enough hard rock, baroque pop, and proto psychedelia on this release to help teach a class on sixties Rock and Roll. The only downside is NOTHING from Satanic Majesties Request, and that's a shame because it's one of my favorite Stones albums, even if it's one of their more controversial offerings to critics and fans. Citadel, In Another Land, or She's A Rainbow would've made this superior release even better.

Title: My favorite era of The Stones
Review: This 2-disc set is pretty awesome as a whole. Disc one starts with some slower tunes like Time Is On My Side, Heart of Stone, and Play With Fire then it jumps right into (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction to help pick up the pace a bit. After As Tears Go By plays then the best part of the Disc gets going with Get Off of My Cloud, Mother's Little Helper, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint It, Black, and Under My Thumb. Then to finish the first disc you get Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend the Night Together. The first disc is a smash and the second disc rolls with it by starting with Jumpin' Jack Flash and Street Fighting Man. Then the tone changes as you get into Sympathy For The Devil, Honky Tonk Women, Gimme Shelter, and Midnight Rambler. Normally what I have seen in the past with compilations of a bands work is the back end of the record is filler but that is not the case here as they close with You Can't Always Get What You Want, Brown Sugar, and Wild Horses.Overall Hot Rocks is superb and a great collection of The Stones' work. I recommend it.

Title: Excellent Compilation Of Early Rolling Stones Hits
Review: If you enjoyed the Stones early hits in the 60's and early 70's, this is the CD to get. Just be aware that the UK release by the same name has a different selection of songs than the US version.

Review: Unless I am mistaken, I have not read any specific comment about the sound quality of this issue on a double album released on sacd format. I am not necessarily a rock music fan but having grown up in the 60s and 70s as a teenager to the sound of Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Beatles, the Stones and many others , I was intrigued to find out by what magnitude the sound had been be improved years later, using the latest digital technology. I grew up to embrace the classical music cause in the intervening years and started buying classical records almost exclusively. So, why buy this now you may ask. Nostalgia and my taste for remastered music in the best possible sound made me go ahead with the purchase of these sacds.. I was just curious to hear what differences I could possibly hear compared to the original recordings I was familiar with.Well, I was in for a pleasant shock. I remember how fuzzy and trebly, the sound used to be on my record player and I put this down to the poor recording and reproduction of the sound. I could not have been any more wrong because now, many years later, I can report that I am absolutely bowled over by the quality of the sound reproduction on my high end system set up for optimum reproduction where any slight change however small can be detected immediately. Not only has the fuzziness and trebly sound gone completely but the clarity of the recording is simply amazing. Suddenly, you are transported into the recording studio, to witness the recording session taking place. I can now hear details I had never heard before, low level details as well as the acoustics of the recording venue with the greatest ease. Suddenly the Stones are performing even better and I would go as far as saying that the recording in its remastered format can be considered to be in the hi fi demo league good enough to be played to showcase your hi fi system. I am now more than happy to play Maria Callas and the Rolling Stones in sacd format! So, if you are a Rolling Stones fan or an audiophile like me, buy this without any further ado. You will not regret it, I promise you.PS : I understand that concern has been expressed by a reviewer over the fact that these sacds will not play as sacds on his sacd player. This is very odd as it should. I had no problem at all with my sacd player.A final thought. I have now just bought Hot rocks vol 2 on the strength of what I heard on the first volume with the knowledge that it will play happily on my standard cd player and on my sacd player.

Review: First released Stateside in January 1972, this has to be the best Stones compliation album ever and if you only choose to have one Stones cd in your collection than this would have to be it.Nearly all of the classics of their Decca years are included here encompassing their poignant and soulful ballads ("Time Is On My Side", "As Tears Go By", "Heart Of Stone", "Ruby Tuesday"), through ascerbic laddish rockers ("Satisfaction", "Get Off Of My Cloud"), through adroit misogyny ("Play With Fire", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Under My Thumb"), to purveyors of something altogether darker ("Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Sympathy for the Devil", "Midnight Rambler"), which reached it's apotheosis in the bloody mayhem of the infamous free concert at the Altamont Speedway in December 1969.Which is really where this collection leaves off, the two gems from 1971; "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" were recorded a couple of years earlier but were delayed from release for contractual reasons. If I have a beef over this particular cd it is very specifically centred on the sound quality, or rather lack of it. In the old days when cd's were a new phenomenon, U.K. purchasers of "Hot Rocks" were treated to stunning stereo tracks of these golden goodies, including a previously unreleased stereo take of "Satisfaction"and other gems such as "Heart of Stone" and "Play With Fire" which were crystalline in their depth and clarity. In fact this release of "Hot Rocks", which came as two separate cd's boasted all the tracks bar two - "As Tears Go By" and "19th Nervous Breakdown" in glorious stereo. Further releases on the U.K. London label held further pleasant suprises for Stones devotees and generally speaking, these releases, easily identifiable by the Red and Blue London logo were superior to their U.S. counterparts.Sadly as part of the increasing move towards "globalisation" these releases are no longer available and what we get here is the U.S. product, with the majority (11 out of 18) tracks in at times muzzy, mono. Why, when every other rock icon of the the sixties has their back catalogue available with optimum sound quality, the long suffering Stones fan should have to make do with second best is beyond me.In the final anaysis for first time listeners, this is a great cd, great because the music transcends the second rate sound quality, for serious devotees you might well want to search further afield for the optimum listening experience which these rock classics merit.

Review: Decent compilation of 21 tracks with 12 (1964-67) on CD1 and 9 (1968-1971) on CD2. Given that the 2nd disc is about 6 minutes longer than the 1st, my view is that a couple of the superb singles from the mid-60s (such as 'It's All Over Now' and 'The Last Time') could easily have been included on Disc 1. Even so, many early classics are here including 'Satisfaction', 'Get off Of My Cloud', 'Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown', 'Paint It Black', 'Let's Spend The Night Together' and the lovely 'Ruby Tuesday as well as superb non-single releases such as 'Play With Fire' and 'As Tears Go By'.CD2 covers the big hitters from 1968-1971 including 'Jumping Jack Flash', 'Honky Tonk Women', 'Brown Sugar' and the glorious 'Street Fighting Man. In addition, there are a number of classy album tracks including the primal 'Sympathy for The Devil', 'Gimme Shelter' and the pretty country ballad 'Wild Horses'; the only thing that doesn't really impress me is the 9 minute live version of 'Midnight Rambler' which is heavy going in this form. However, if you're looking for a really good compilation of early Stones material then this should serve as a great introduction to their extensive back catalogue. Highly recommended.
