The gangster movie is one of the most popular genres in film. From the Italian, Irish, and Russian "families" in America to similarly sinister groups in Europe, Japan, and beyond, the cinema has never shied away from portraying the evil exploits of these brutal outfits. In this highly entertaining and informative book, two accomplished and apropos authors put the genre in perspective like no other author or documentarian has done before.
The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies provides extensive reviews of the Top 100 gangster films of all time, including sidebars like "Reality Check," "Hit and Miss," "I Know That Guy," "Body Count," and other fun and informative features. Also included are over a dozen stand-alone chapters such as Sleeper "Hits," "Fugazi" Flops, Guilty Pleasures, Lost Treasures, Q&A Interviews with top actors and directors (including Chazz Palinteri, Michael Madsen, Joe Mantagna, and more), plus over 50 compelling photographs.
Foreword by Joe Pistone, the FBI agent and mob infiltrator who wrote the bestselling book and acclaimed movie, Donnie Brasco.

Title: The Best Book Available On Gangster Films! (4.5 STARS)
Review: I consider myself a historian and somewhat of an expert on the subject of gangsterism in America. That all being said,of course I'm also a huge fan of gangster films. This book is nearly a complete study on the genre! It features complete essays on plenty of the best gangster films old and new, in the history of Hollywood and elsewhere. Inside this book, you will find plenty of insight behind the inspiration of these films such as: rare facts, the violence level of each film, mob hits, best lines and pivotal scenes. I also enjoyed the interviews with actors:Michael Madsen,Tim Roth and Chazz Palminteri, gangster;Nick Caramendi from The Bruno Family in Philly, and Director:Danny Provenzano. There are also some decent photos as well. However,I thought that there should have been a lot more. Author,George Anastasia is a respected historian on the subject of organized crime and does a very good job of giving the reader a true crime history lesson on what a lot of these films were based on. Most of my personal favorite films are here, such as:"THE GODFATHER I and II", "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA","SCARFACE","GOODFELLAS","AMERICAN GANGSTER","CASINO","A BRONX TALE" and "RESERVOIR DOGS". This book also turned me on to the novel: "CITY OF GOD" by Paulo Lins,as well as the great films:"GLORIA" and "HISTORY OF VIOLENCE". The writers also did a very good job of including great films from:England,Hong Kong,France,Japan and even Germany. I didn't understand why some of their picks were considered gangster films such as:"MIDNIGHT RUN" and "THE FRESHMAN",but I was delighted to see the addition of:"THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE" which I always thought was a great gangster film that was overlooked by most fans and critics. I also thought that they missed a few very good films that would have made this book much better such as:"MENACE II SOCIETY","THE BROTHERHOOD" starring Kirk Douglas, and "THE COTTON CLUB", which doesn't get respect because it didn't do well at the box office. Check out James Remar's performance as Dutch Schultz in that film,he was one of the baddest gangsters ever! "TRAINING DAY" also should have been included as well, considering some of the films that were on this list(Such as: "THE FRENCH CONNECTION").Yeah,Denzel Washington played a cop, but everything about that character was ALL GANGSTER! I highly recommend this book because it's informative and a lot of fun to read. A true collectors item for all fans in the gangster film genre.

Title: UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Review: What Glen and George have done is unreal and truly wonderful job and of course the ultimate coffeetable book. This book can bring up more fights then a Thanksgiving dinner. Ask Uncle Paul which Godfather is better and you just might start World War 3 at Thanksgiving Dinner, and thanks to Glen and George no dinners will be safe again..Happy Holidays for many years to come..LOL

Review: I've really enjoyed reading this book and have ordered half a dozen movies it reviews that I've never seen before. The book is well laid out and well written and it's obvious the authors know their subject. I'd like to find books like this for other movie genres like Westerns, Sci Fi, Comedies etc.
