Title: Mighty happy I discovered this series of 4 volumes.
Review: I tutor ESL adult students as a Laubach volunteer. One woman I teach left Korea with a thorough understand of English grammar but with a meager vocabulary, and fears being expected to read a book in English or engage in a meaningful conversation. We're still using Vol. 1 of this series, but already she is gaining confidence in reading -- discovering that, having read the easier versions of the story, she is able to figure out meaning of words new to her in the "Advanced" version of the story. I've already ordered Vol. 2-4 for the two of us.

Title: This small book is a real gem!
Review: This book provided a unique way to help readers improve their English. It was clever to start with a simple telling of Aesop's Fables which are quite familiar and then make them more complex in both form and wording. This book would be useful to English learners at all educational levels. It is appropriate for ESL learners and native speakers. The book is versatile and could be used in many settings. The study questions help the reader evaluate his understanding of the story as it becomes more complex and try to figure out more difficult words in context. This small book is a real gem.

Title: Good idea, but carelessly done
Review: The author starts with Aesop's Fables, and retells each of them 3 times. The first time is the easiest for ESL readers; all verbs are in the present tense, and most words are short. The second time the verbs change to the past tense, and a few synonyms are introduced for words in the first version. The third time there are a few more substitutions, and some idioms. This is followed by a sort of quiz. The writing is sloppy, and includes some frank grammatical errors. The choice of synonyms and idioms seems arbitrary. The author seems to have confused obscurity with quality, as each retelling gets ever farther away from the gist of the story.
