Ever feel a little overwhelmed by the many movie choices you can make on a given evening? Ever get tired of seeing the same old selection of titles over and over again on your queue or list? Or have you by contrast ever been lucky enough to suddenly find some undiscovered cinematic treasure that most folks never heard of? THE BEST MOVIES YOU NEVER SAW is designed to help movie-lovers broaden their horizons with cult films, recent indies, under-the-radar picks and quite a few older films, some of which were once popular but have somehow now fallen out of the limelight. Subtitled 300 UNDER-THE-RADAR MOVIES THAT WERE OVERLOOKED, UNJUSTLY TRASHED OR JUST PLAIN TERRIFIC, the book includes family films, true stories, film noir, action, comedy, sci-fi, romance, mystery ... and a few that are downright unclassifiable. It also comes with a genre index, an appendix of actors and directors, and a list of must-see classics to complete your filmgoing background. Each film is carefully described with cast, plot and various trivia, along with the occasional background material on film history or cinematic techniques. The perfect book for die-hard film fans or casual viewers who just want something different on a Saturday night.

Title: Informative but also fun
Review: I purchased this after a high school friend who knew of my love of film recommended it. In it, Smith presents titles with a brief overview of why he believes they should be seen. As in most âbest ofâ types of listsâwhether Top Ten, 100, or in this case, 300âthe fun is multilayered. Each entry is about a page (sometimes a tad more, sometimes less), and Smith offers a brief synopsis along with why he recommends each selection. As in most âbest ofâ types of lists, the fun is multilayered. Of course, the order is personal, but first I checked out which movies Iâd actually seen. I scored 58 of his 300, leaving lots of possibilities.Next, I looked through unfamiliar titles to see which ones may be of interest, usually reading those entries a bit closer to start compiling a list of what to look for. Smith makes that task easier with an appendix listing titles under divisions of cast members as well as both general and specific categories. Heâs also provided a âbonusâ list of well-known titles he recommends.Eventually, people like me also start reading the entries to see if we agree or disagree with the writerâs assessment as well what titles I think are missing, part of the fun of books like this, and I hope he follows up with a second volume.

Title: Best under-the-radar-book for the best under-the-radar movies
Review: Joe Smith's newest book arrived with a pile of 300 alphabetically-arranged reviews of underdog films, including my favorite, "Bad Day at Black Rock", starring Spencer Tracy, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and the best character actor to come out of Lynn, Massachusetts, Walter Brennan. It's a real treasure (the book, I mean), especially if you're looking for that special something to watch. Joe's regular newspaper reviews are a treat of good writing--clear, observant, insightful, and unpretentious. Cheers to you, Joe, on your fourth book. Readers will not be disappointed. Joe's knowledge of films is encyclopedic, but each review is sufficiently brief and tidy. Highly, highly recommended.

Title: great and fun reference to fuel your movie nights
Review: This book is great. My wife got it for me for our anniversary. We've had a lot of fun leafing through it. It's the kind of book you pick up to read an entry or two and before you know it you're bouncing your way all over the book as things grab your interest. For some that I've seen it's fun to read details reminding me why I liked them and then there's a whole bunch I've never seen that will go on my watch list. The length of each entry is just right, about a page. Also appreciate the genre/category index.
