Title: Most useful cookbook in my kitchen
Review: I am not typically a cookbook user, but rather a search on the Web for a recipe type of gal. Most of the time, I find that I only like one or two recipes in a cookbook and then, never use the rest of the cookbook again. Not so with Slow Cooker Revolution. I have made a number of the recipes in this book and for some, I've even made them more than once because my family enjoyed it that much. Yes, the recipes can require some additional prep work that perhaps other slow cooker recipes that you've tried before does not. However, the book is explains in the preface that this is because most "dump and cook" slow cooker recipes are not very good and one has to develop the basis of good flavor (like cooking your aromatics first) before throwing them in a slow cooker. This small amount of prep work is truly worth the effort for recipes that are truly outstanding. To be fair, not everything I have made in the cookbook has been hit-it-out-of-the-park good, but far more have been wonderful than not. Here is a list of what I have tried:Bachelor Beef Stew - The use of frozen chopped onions and microwaving them was a big time saver, however, this has been the least favorite of the recipes I've tried.Hearty Beef Stew - By comparison, this recipe's robust flavor made it a winner in my eyes.Beef Goulash - Made this for Christmas Eve and it was a PERFECT meal for a cold evening. The flavors were delicious over rigatoni.Korean Braised Short Ribs - So good, I had to make this dish twice (within two weeks of each other).Maple-Glazed Pork Loin - Another recipe I loved so much, I made it twice. The first time was for my in-laws when they were visiting for the Holidays and everyone loved it so much. My father-in-law is a gourmet, both a skilled cook and avid diner in nice restaurants. He's also a Cook's Illustrated subscriber and even he was impressed with this recipe. The maple glaze sauce in this recipe is truly outstanding.Texas Chili - We liked the beef chunks in this recipe and it had good flavor, but I still prefer my chili recipe from Silver Palate.Beginner's Pulled Pork - One of the first recipes I tried so my memory is a bit faded here, but I recall enjoying it though perhaps not "wowed" by it since I can't remember much about it.Meaty Tomato Sauce, Big-Batch Bolognese Sauce, Italian Sunday Gravy - All the pasta sauces we've tried have been very good. And they taste just as good when frozen & defrosted. My husband is particular to the Sunday Italian Gravy as it has huge chunks of meat & sausages in it, though I did find that my flank steak did not get tender enough to shred as the recipe said that it would. Nevertheless, it was a good recipe.Meatballs and Marinara - I've never made meatballs before this, so I thought the recipe was too much work, but I guess you typically have to bake meatballs and then, still cook them in the sauce, so maybe this recipe is still easier? Not sure. It was mighty tasty.Chili Mac - Made this for a big get-together with friends and it was a big hit. Right amount of cheesiness and the best of comfort foods.Honey-Glazed Carrots - This is the recipe that I've made the most out of this cookbook because 1) it's so easy and 2) it's so tasty. It's the perfect side dish to many entrees and I like that it's a great vegetable dish that my toddler eats up.French Toast Casserole - This was super delicious and I keep wanting to make this again. The only problem I have with the breakfast recipes is that in order to make them in time for brunch, I would have to start making them at 6 or 7am since the recipes take 4-6 hours on low.Irish Oatmeal with Bananas and Walnuts - The hubby and toddler loved this so much, though Hubby said that he could have done without the walnuts.Rum-Raisin Bread Pudding - I've made this twice and each time it was a BIG WINNER. It's so good, I wish I could make this more often, but it's not the healthiest so it's best as a treat.So, there you have it. As you can see, I've made recipes from virtually every section of the cookbook and have loved almost all of them. Even though the recipes do require extra prep work, I think it's worth the effort.

Title: Useful and beautiful slow cooker cookbook
Review: Yes, I am a big fan of America's Test Kitchen. I love their TV show on PBS, I love their magazine, Cook's Illustrated, and I love their cookbooks. And there is none I love more that their new one, one that takes on the slow cooker. If you are a fan of the slow cooker...or someone who has one gathering dust on a pantry shelf...this is a book you will like. For fans, it will add a wide variety of well tested recipes to the favorites you are already making. For those of you that are not using your slow cooker at much as you might like, for any number of reasons, this book will answer all the questions that may be holding you back.In that particular rather geeky way that I love, ATK starts at the beginning with how to buy a slow cooker and the keys that will make your recipes a success. Then it is into the 200 recipes, broken down into categories- Soups, Stews, Braises, Chilies, Barbecue, Pasta Sauces, Meatballs and Meatloaves, Enchiladas and Tacos, Casseroles (Mac and Cheese, using uncooked pasta), On the Side, Eggs and Brunch, Desserts (Nutella Bread Pudding..oh, be still my heart) and ends with Basics, which covers things like jam, applesauce, gravy and four different broths. There is quite a range of recipes here, and since the vast majority use fresh ingredients, some prep is needed in many. But there is also a number marked "Easy Prep" that are, well, easy prep.This is a very attractive book, each recipe on a full page, many with a full page, full color photograph opposite. I tell you, if you look at the photos in this book, there is no way you will not want it.But this is ATK, so you know they are going to throw in a lot of practical, useful information as well. A nice full page article of how to use the microwave to help out that slow cooker, "All About Herbs" and "Pasta 101" are a couple of examples. Many pages, in addition to a recipe will have one of ATK's "Smart Shopping Tips", like the best brand of canned beans, jarred tomato sauce or coconut milk, and "Quick Prep Tips", like the best way to cut stew meat, prepare your hearty greens or use lemon grass. And many recipes will have a nice little On The Side box on the page, giving a quick, easy recipe for something that would go perfect with the slow cooker dish, like Easy Mashed Potatoes, Caesar Salad or Cheese Toasties. Golly, they sounds so good....And I love that ever recipe starts with a paragraph explaining "Why This Recipe Works", where they show what they learned in testing. Why use high or low in this recipe, why add this or that ingredient, and techniques to use that will really make the dish turn out it's best.I have a long way to go with my slow cooker. Soup, especially a great sound onion soup with a surprise ingredient, may be my next attempt. Then something I would never think of, like the delicious cooking Spinach and Mushroom Lasagna (they use a foil collar and foil sling for easy removal of their lasagnas, like the sausage one on the cover). Or how about Coconut Rice Pudding?But I started with the more classic braised Pork Loin with Cranberries and Orange...which was so easy and so delicious.

Review: NOTE: If you do not like prep work for slow cooker and want "easy, throw together in a pot and wait" type of recipes, this book is not for you. If you don't mind some extra prep work before putting ingredients into slow cooker, read on!I purchased this book about a month ago and couldn't wait to try it. I own a decent slow cooker and I love the idea of putting my meals together and not having to watch them while they cook, or have them ready by the time I get home from work. Unfortunately A LOT of slow cooker recipes I've tried in the past (recipe books and online) yielded bland results, and a couple times I had to just throw the whole meal away just because it tasted so bad. So I was on a hunt for a good slow cooker recipe book.So far I have tried just a few recipes and I have to say, although I have not tried more recipes then I would have liked,this is THE BEST slow cooking recipe book I've seen so far. As usual the authors go into details regarding why they made certain modifications to the recipes and why traditional recipes would not work as well. I love reading the science behind cooking, but if you are not into that then it is very easy to skip. Almost all of my recipes, except for one, turned out amazingly delicious. I was also able to successfully covert some of the recipes into a regular stove-top recipes.It's a very versatile book and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great slow-cooker recipe book.Here is the list of tried recipes:Soups1. Farmhouse Chicken and Corn Chowder Soup - amazing!! Boyfriend loved it too and said it was the best cornchowder he's ever had. I made it on stove top.Braises2. Chicken with White Wine, Tarragon and Cream - not impressed and will not repeat. It is possible it did not turn out because I used milk alternative instead of creamPasta Sauces3. Chicken and Musroom Sauce - okay, but not overly memorable4. Chicken and Broccoli Sauce - really good! I tripled the broccoli just because I wanted more veggies, but it is not necessary if you don't want to.Meatballs, Meatloaves and More5. Meatballs and Marinara - really good! I made the sauce on stove top.6. Italian Stuffed Bell Peppers - Amazing! Definitely a keeper. I used cooked brown rice in this recipe.Casseroles7. Curried Chicken and Rice - good! I didn't put rice and doubled cauliflower. Again this is not necessary, if you want to put rice, I am sure it will be delicious.8. Lazy Man's Stuffed Cabbage - Amazing! and I don't even like cabbage, so it says a lot. I used cooked brown rice in this recipe. I made this in a casserole dish and baked it in the oven at 350F, covered in tinfoil for 1 hour and uncovered for ~20 minutes.

Review: I LOVE this cook book, though it should be noted I am American and therefore appreciate the American measurements described in this book. Recipes are tasty, easy, clearly described and easy to half for 2-3 people. Half a dozen of these recipes have become my go-to weeknight dinners. Also gives chopping advice. My slow cooker bible!

Review: Wow! This is the first slow cooker book I've actually enjoyed. They have great tips for preserving the texture of foods, like placing vegetables in foil packets so the won't become mush in a stew. I enjoy prepping ingredients and don't mind taking the time, but if you're looking for a "dump and go" sort of book you may wish to look elsewhere. The recipes are straightforward, generally don't call for exotic ingredients, and don't overuse processed items.I've tried eight recipes in the three weeks I've had this book. Each has been delicious. The sticky wings were particularly excellent. Four more copies soon followed to be given to family coworkers. It's that good! The only thing I'm not impressed with is the binding. The quality is okay, but spiral binding would be more appropriate.

Review: It's essential to bear in mind that this book is published for the American market so the cuts of meat tend to be different & some ingredients aren't easy to source here. Likewise, some of the dishes are not really of much use - although in fairness that is bound to be the case with any recipe book. I tried the Goulash first, & found it pretty dull, but the beef Burgundy had plenty of flavour. So far, however, I've found as many reclines on the Internet (& particularly Mumsnet, at first) to be just as useful. For me, this book is no more than OK. Hope others are happier with it.
