Title: Road trip (and City Trip) Inspiration
Review: I bought this book for myself after checking a copy out from the library! It is loaded with so many road trip options that I decided I needed my own copy to tab, write in & just pick up for inspiration.What I really like about the Lonely Planet âUSAâs Best Tripsâ book is the plentiful maps (to include a pull-out one) and there is a real, tested & workable itinerary for each recommended trip. Why do so many travel books skip the maps? If you are a map lover, like me, Lonely Planet has got you covered! Butâthe book doesnât stop thereâthe Lonely Planet team recommend close by & related road trip segments and City Highlights âStretch Your Legsâ walks. I have traveled so much in the US, but still this book packed in ideas and routes I had never thought of putting together.And, if you just want to sit in your comfy chair and dream about your next tripâthis is a great book to pick up and peruse & dream!

Title: USA's Best Trips 4th Ed June 2021-I'd return if I could
Review: If I could return this travel book, I would. Though it is filled with a lot of good travel ideas, it has fallen victim to the current trend of history bashing. History is trickyâ¦it must be viewed within its context; we are what we are today because of what occurred in the past, both good and bad. I am not in any way condoning slaveryâ¦it was a terrible thing then and itâs a terrible thing now, but this book is riddled with comments that are very jarring and just feels inappropriate in a travel book. The comments and statements of the authors are broad and sweeping in their condemnation, and, if examined thoughtfully, are factually questionable. Itâs like being enticed to walk down a beautiful garden path and finding a dead skunk in the road. An example is found on page 243. Emerald Mound, an indigenous burial site, is described thus: âThere are shady, creekside picnic spots, and if you climb to the top, youâll find a vast lawn along with a diagram of what the temple may have looked like. It would have been perched on the secondary and highest of the mounds. A perfect diversion on an easy spring afternoon just before the sun smolders, when birdsong rings from the trees and mingles with the call of a distant trainâ. The narrative continues on to the city of Natchez with this: âDrive on for about 13 more miles. As you approach Natchez, the mossy arms of southern oaks spread over the roadway, and the air gets just a touch warmer and moist. You can almost smell the river from hereâ. Under âNatchezâ, the authors say; âWhen the woods part, revealing historic antebellum mansions, you have reached Natchez. In the 1840s, Natchez had more millionaires per capita than any city in the world (because the plantation owners didnât pay their staff). Opulent and undeniably beautiful, these homes were built on the back of slave laborâ¦â. The rest of the very short paragraph about Natchez is just as uninviting, mentioning only that Mark Twain âcrashed in a roomâ there on numerous occasions and the name of the best bar in town. Wowâ¦hundreds of years of American history and this is how itâs described.Natchez has many wonderful historical sites that are so much more than opulent homes built on the back of slavery and a bar. To name a few: the Natchez Museum of African American History, the William Johnson House (owned by a black American barber), and Forks of the Road Monument is very moving. Many of the âopulent mansionsâ have detailed history on the lives of slaves and, if for no other reason, are worth touring. There are also restaurants, music, and American history everywhere in Natchez and it would be a shame to write if off your âmust seeâ list due to this poorly written book.
