Packed with "compelling inside stories" (Chicago Tribune), Teammate is the inspiring memoir from "Grandpa Rossy," the veteran catcher who became the heart and soul of the 2016 Chicago Cubs championship team and was named manager in 2019.

In 2016 the Cubs snapped a 108-year curse, winning the World Series in a history-making, seven-game series against the Cleveland Indians. Of the many storylines to Chicago's fairytale season, one stood out: the late-career renaissance of David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who had played back-up for 13 of his 15 pro seasons.

Beyond Ross's remarkably strong play, he became the ultimate positive force in the Cubs locker room, mentoring and motivating his fellow players, some of them nearly twenty years his junior. Thanks to Cubs Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, "Grandpa Rossy" became a social media sensation. No one, however, could have predicted that Ross's home run in his final career at bat would help seal the Cubs championship.

Now, in Teammate, Ross shares the inspiring story of his life in baseball, framed by the events of that unforgettable November night.

Title: Grandpa Rossy shares a lot of wisdom
Review: This book was great. David Toss became a hero to all cubs fans not because of his immense talent but because his immense positive influence in his team. The team showed the world how much they loved Rossy and in turn the world showed Rossy how much we loved him. This book gives great insight on how to be a great teammate and how that transfers over in all walks of life. Being a great teammate doesn’t require god given talent, although Rossy is more talented then he takes credit for, but being a great teammate requires possessing a positive attitude. A willful desire to make a team great through support, accountability, and caring for your teammates.David Ross does an excellent job of sharing his stories about his life in baseball and he teaches all readers the power of being there for others, of sticking with your dream, and of finding your role in life. There is great wisdom in the words Rossy shared and I am happy to have come along for the ride.I’ll never forget the joy of the 2016 Chicago Cubs winning the World Series and how big a role Rossy played in delivering a World Series Championship to all of us long suffering Cubs fans. Thanks Grandpa Rossy for all the memories! Go Cubs Go!

Title: How leaders are made
Review: It isn't often that a backup catcher becomes the symbol of his team, or is the galvanizing force in the locker room or the diamond. David Ross did these things not by being a superstar hitter or glitzy performer. He was just the best teammate he could be.At the highest levels of competition in professional sports, you might think that inspirational lists on a whiteboard, schmaltzy and even chichéd, would never be used by men who are paid millions to play a child's game. Yet, this constant prompting, and the constant challenging of your teammates to be their best, to be honest with their self-assessments, and to always bring all that they have and all that they are to the field is precisely what Ross insists is key to being a winner and a friend.Cub fans will rejoice in the description of how the 2016 season unfolded, and the descriptions of game 7 of the World Series play-by-play, out-by-out, eventually leading to the end of the 108 year drought for Chicago and their first World Championship of the modern era. Baseball fans will enjoy Ross' description of friendships and rivalries among all the teams he played for (and there were a number of them). Funny insights into the banter on the field, especially at the plate between catchers and umpires, are just icing on the cake. This is a well-written book. It tells three stories concurrently: The Chicago Cubs monumental 2016 run, game 7 of the World Series, and Ross' growth as a player and as a leader. "Grandpa Ross" doesn't pull punches, even discussing mistakes he made as a player, and his terrifying experiences with concussion injuries. If you love baseball, and especially if you love the Cubs, this is a must read.

Title: Life lessons from Grandpa Rossy
Review: As a Cubs fan for the last 6 decades, most of them heartbreaking, I loved reading David Ross' chronicle. Some of his important lessons appear early: it's OK to change; it's good to listen; giving of yourself leads to respect. It's easy to see how David, never more than an acceptable backup catcher, became the critical factor in the success of the Cubs. His gratitude and actual wonder at the durability of his career and the impact he has had on younger players is delightful to read. Sometimes, success breeds arrogance: not so here.

Title: David Ross - Class Act
Review: This book is a great reminder of the importance of putting yourself out there for your teammates and holding yourself to a high standard. As a lifelong Chicago Cub fan, I can answer the question “How does a backup catcher become an A-list celebrity?” David it’s by striving to be the best you can be for the fans, your team, and yourself. We saw that you were bought in 100% and that made us buy in to you. I hope you enjoy your retirement. I hope that you can teach the upcoming players to be just like you. Thank you for all you did to bring that trophy to Wrigley <3 This was a great read! Reviewer: Kindle Customer

Title: Highly recommend this book
Review: I'm a die hard Cubs fan. I'll be honest, when we signed David Ross as the coach I wasn't very sure it was the best fit. After reading this book, I'm 100% on the David Ross train. It's an easy read and does a good job outlining what he brings to the table and what he brings to the clubhouse. Walks you through the whole 2016 season, David Ross's last game (and the anxiety the whole day before).Highly recommend for any Cubs fan trying to learn more about our new coach. I finished reading it in like 2 days and I'm not even a big reader.

Title: Insightful Baseball Book
Review: David Ross's book is a great baseball read, not just for a Cub fan but any baseball fan. He gives the reader insight into what makes a good player and an even better team mate. He opens up with his own personal struggles in his career as well as his, and whatever team he was playing for, triumphs. He kept a journal during his last season as a player. So interspersed in each chapter are vignettes of his personal thoughts and feelings from spring training through the World Series.I recommended this book to a friend of mine who's son is a good baseball player. I thought Mr. Ross's writing about what makes for a good team mate would be helpful.

Title: Good book for baseball fans and young players
Review: I was hoping for an auto-biography of David Ross, I am sure this man has a fascinating life story. His book relates only part of it, in great detail, about playing professional baseball. Hee tells about some of the games he has played, play by play by play -- I am sure that would be interesting for someone who is a baseball junkie. I am not a baseball junkie and some of the baseball terms he used are not in my vocabulary. With that said, the book is a pleasant easy read. I would expect nothing less from a man with David Ross's charisma. He is honest about some of his personal failings and how he worked to overcome them. His advice on being a sportsman like player is solid and wise, based on experience. It would be an excellent resource for young baseball players to become better players and better human beings.

Review: David Ross had a better than average baseball carreer, lasting fifteen years but always in a supporting role as a backup catcher. Despite his limitations, he became a beloved member of the World Series Champion 2016 Chicago Cubs. He capped it all off by contributing a home run in his very last game, a truly storybook ending.
