Before Sex and the City...before The Starter Wife...there was The First Wives Club
The sharp-witted and sexy New York Times bestseller!

Elise, Brenda, and Annie have one thing in common: they were all first wives. Make that two things in common -- they were the secret to success for each of their spouses, faithfully supporting them as they rose to the top. Okay, three things: they were each abandoned for younger, blonder, sleeker women, "trophy wives" for their exes to sport about town.

It may not be on the menu at New York's finer restaurants, but revenge is a dish best served cold -- and while lunching at Le Cirque, the ladies decide the time for self-pity is over: now it's time to get even. How they conspire to give each man his due -- in full view of New York society -- makes The First Wives Club the "deliciously wicked" (San Francisco Chronicle) indulgence that, like vintage champagne, goes straight to your head...and captures your heart along the way!

Title: Even though dated this is a great book.
Review: This is a really great book about women finding themselves after defining themselves through their husbands. Yes, the book is a bit dated but it's still a great read. It's nice to see women bonding and working toward a common goal of justice and blooming later in life. I have seen the movie and compared to the book it is shallow and poorly done. If you've seen the movie and want to read the book, throw out your preconceived notions of the characters as portrayed by the actresses. In my opinion it was miscast. Just read and enjoy the book and these great ladies.

Title: If you liked the movie, even if you didn't like the movie, you'll love the book!
Review: If your only knowledge of The First Wives Club is the movie, you owe it to yourself to check out the much better book on which it waas based. I would watch Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Maggie Smith read a phone book, so I enjoyed their performances immensely, but the screenplay left out most of the best parts of the far more nuanced book. Unlike the movie versions, the book's characters are much more multi-faceted. And the secondary characters, like Brenda's decorate friend Duarte and Morty's second wife Shelby, are fully developed, rather than shtick-laden caricatures (although Bronson Pinchot and Sarah Jessica Parker are very entertaining). In fact, after stumbling across the movie on TV, I had to re-read the book to remind myself of how satisfying it was. This is the best of all possible worlds - page-turning, engrossing and entertaining reading, but with characters and situations that are intelligently written and thought-provoking.

Title: Great read but much more intense than movie!
Review: This is much more graphic/serious than the movie. ****TRIGGER WARNING **** There is some serious and graphic talk of suicide. The female characters are even more fabulous, the men even more despicable, and the revenge even sweeter, albeit with a bit more complicated story. AND things get a lot meaner.Enjoyed this immensely! Really enjoy olivia Goldsmith!

Title: MOVIE vs. BOOK
Review: Holy Moly, talk about gritty, sad, dirty, shameful, underhanded. The movie was a carnival compared to the book. I understand clearly that most books and movies are occasionally polar opposites or at least a bit different, but the book was really wild and shocking. But, again, totally worth the read, excellent story.

Title: Book Club book
Review: This was an ok read. It was a book club book, otherwise I'm not sure I would have picked it up. It made for a very interesting discussion, so I would recommend it for a book club pick, but it did not make me want to read any of Olivia's others novels. If you pick it for book club, I'd recommend doing some background research on the author. That throws a whole new dimension to the discussion of the novel.

Title: First wives
Review: Loved the book, better than the movie, the characters were very well portrayed. You really had an opportunity to understand what drove those women to "not get mad, get even"!

Review: Novel is good but not happy with the seller. The front cover has dried food on it. Kinda gross. They could have wiped it off first.
