This book is not about how to hit the tennis ball. It’s about where to hit the ball, when, and why. It focuses on playing tennis strategically, which is the quickest and best way to raise your game to the next level. For recreational players, developing a strategic approach to the game is the single, most transformative step you can take. In this book, you will learn how to take advantage of the strengths in your game, how to minimize your weaknesses, and how to attack your opponent’s game. Most tennis players start by focusing on the mechanics of their strokes. That makes sense. If you can’t hit the ball over the net and inside the lines, the rest doesn’t really matter. Later, when you’re hitting the ball well, it’s fun to keep working on your shots. All tennis players love to hit the ball. Unfortunately, stroke improvement has a diminishing return. Early on you improve rapidly, but then the pace levels off. It can be frustrating to work, week after week, month after month, and not see any progress. Developing your strategic understanding of the game completely changes that dynamic. It’s difficult to exaggerate how much focusing on strategy can improve every aspect of your game. At first glance, tennis is a marvelously simple game. All you have to do is hit the ball over the net and inside the lines one time more than your opponent does and you win the point. Do that often enough and you win the match. In truth, however, tennis is endlessly complex. That’s why it becomes a lifetime passion for so many of us. It’s a demanding amalgamation of muscle memory, hand-eye coordination, geometric understanding, stamina, and split-second decision making. Adding another layer of complexity, most of us model our games on professional tennis players. We see them win points by smacking the felt off the ball, going for the lines, serving aces, and hitting topspin lobs from outside the doubles alley. We want to play like that. The catch is we don’t have unbelievable hand-eye coordination and don’t practice eight hours a day. Is it any wonder, then, that about 80 percent of points in a recreational match end with an unforced error? That’s right. Eight out of 10 points—and often more—end because you or your opponent hit the ball into the net or outside the lines. When we come out of top in a match, we like to think that we won. It’s probably more accurate to say that we didn’t lose. At the core of strategic success at the recreational level is reducing unforced errors. Cutting them by just one or two per set can lead to an exponential leap in matches won. This book are filled with strategies and tactics that you can adopt and adapt to improve your game. You don’t need to apply all of them; use only the concepts that work for you. If altering the strategies better suits your game, go for it. Playing strategically will make your game more consistent. You’ll become a better competitor, and you’ll have more fun.

Title: Excellent reminders of sound tennis strategic advice
Review: I’ve read this book from cover to cover and making a second pass through it now. Love the simple presentation of the strategic tennis points that club players will benefit from. I used several of these strategies in my daily play and they really do work if you stick to your plan and are patient. Don’t expect miracles - you still have to successfully execute and that comes with lots of play and practice.

Review: Many of the key strategies discussed were repeated throughout the chapters but I liked that. It keep reinforcing what an attainable game plan is for a beginner level recreational player like myself.

Title: Very Practical Reference for Match Preparation and Strategy Development
Review: I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a coherent plan when they step onto the court. Too often our plan is to smash serves, rip down-the-line winners, and slice wicked drop shots from behind the baseline. It's what we see in a pro match, so we want to emulate it. Gerry Donohue smashes that mindset and reminds us we're mortals. He lays out a practical general strategic mindset for your shot making and point play, then gives tactical advice for specific styles of opponents. As an added bonus, the two Appendices give concise guidance for your mindset and strategy. Appendix 1 is basically motivational "words of wisdom" and Appendix 2 is Ten Components of an Effective Recreational Tennis Strategy. This book didn't help me win my next match, but I noticed myself using the strategies I'd learned, and I felt much more confident and content walking off the court, even with a loss. I could look back at my performance and compare the strategies in the book and see exactly where I successfully followed Donohue's advice (and won points & games) and where I fell short and reverted back to flail-and-hope tennis.I would also add that the concepts laid out should help your practice sessions as well. For example, it's one thing to think, "okay, I'm hitting cross-court on rallies unless an easy opportunity comes for down the line." It's another to actually do it, so now you have a goal for practice: deep cross-court shots until you can do them repeatedly as long as you to need in a point.Get the book and read it a lot; it WILL help!

Title: Enjoyed the discussion
Review: A clear and simple collection of strategic thoughts for he recreational player. The first step to winning in tennis is to take the strokes you have and make the best use of them. Not much ground breaking here but a good collection that's easy to read. I liked it.

Review: Not a bad book but most of it can be found watching you tube videos. I was hoping there would be plays or point construction tips.

Review: Basic strategies but ones that work.My game improved immediately by following the principles that removed some of the thought and indecision around shot selection. Hit cross court, hit beyond service line, don’t break first and try to hit a winner, learn your shot tolerance, etc. He’s right!I recommend this book.

Review: I can't really judge how effective the tips are, firstly because I'm currently unable to play (recovering from surgery) and secondly because I'm a beginner and thus not really the book's main "target audience". Yet, I really liked it. It's a quick, enjoyable read. Some of the tips may sound a bit obvious, yet it is the kind of stuff you need to hear/read, as they refer to bad habits anyone can easily develop. Furthermore, his insights also help you look at the game a bit differently and perhaps understand it a bit better even when you're watching the pros on TV. The book is in line with what I expected after reading the description and the reviews, and it did not disappoint me. Can't wait until I'm able to play again to try and put it all to practice to see how effective it will be.

Review: this book is worthless. I expected a manual with a sequence of practical playing patterns but it's just a list of common sense advice. Do not waste your money on this book.

A bon entendeur !
