The best-selling approachable guide that has inspired thousands to manage or overcome depression — fully revised and updated for life in the 21st century.
Depression rates around the world have skyrocketed in the 20‑plus years since Richard O'Connor first published his classic book on living with and overcoming depression. Nearly 40 million American adults suffer from the condition, which affects nearly every aspect of life, from relationships to job performance, physical health, productivity, and, of course, overall happiness. And in an increasingly stressful and overwhelming world, it's more important than ever to understand the causes and effects of depression, and what we can do to overcome it.
In this fully revised and updated edition — which includes updated information on the power of mindfulness, the relationship between depression and other diseases, the risks and side effects of medication, depression’s effect on thinking, and the benefits of exercise — Dr. O'Connor explains that, like heart disease and other physical conditions, depression is fueled by complex and interrelated factors: genetic, biochemical, environmental. But Dr. O'Connor focuses on an additional factor that is often overlooked: our own habits. Unwittingly, we get good at depression. We learn how to hide it, and how to work around it. We may even achieve great things, but with constant struggle rather than satisfaction. Relying on these methods to make it through each day, we deprive ourselves of true recovery, of deep joy and healthy emotion.
Undoing Depression teaches us how to replace depressive patterns with a new and more effective set of skills. We already know how to "do" depression — and we can learn how to undo it. With a truly holistic approach that synthesizes the best of the many schools of thought about this painful disease, and a critical eye toward medications, O'Connor offers new hope — and new life — for sufferers of depression.

Title: Brilliant and comprehensive
Review: As Richard O'Connor states, you won't find many people with his experience, both personal and professional. He witnessed his mother's depression, who ended her life when he was still a child. Understandably, he went on to suffer from depression as well. He chose a mental health profession, allowing him to treat and see many other depressives. In short, he really knows what he is talking about, and it shows in this brilliant and compassionate book. What I particularly like is the comprehensiveness of depression's consequences, its impact on your body, your relationship, your thinking, your emotions, your addictions, your work, your parental skills .As O'Connor states, most depressives do not understand they are suffering from this disease. They typically come for therapy because of a crisis in their relationships, an addiction being out of control, or an issue at work. It's only when they are assessed by a mental health professional that they understand that they are truly depressed. Reading this book and recognizing yourself all over the descriptions can allow you to do the very same thing. This book will also help you to overcome guilt or shame for being depressed. Most depressed people tend to believe they are somehow to blame for how they feel, that they should snap out of it with willpower, or that it is an imaginary disease. Thanks to Undoing Depression, you will understand that depression has real physical characteristics. Even if the root cause of depression is your past, the consequences of this disease are real, measurable, and very much in the present.Undoing Depression will also give you tips and methods to overcome depression, and take charge of your recovery. Unlike a lot of mental health professionals, he thinks there a a lot of things we can do to reprogram our mind: mindfulness, exercise, understanding and tracking our emotions, detachment...If there is one aspect of depression that is lacking, it is the root cause of it: your past. O'Connor touches on it very briefly, only to make it clear that it is always the root cause of your depression. But unfortunately he does not expand on the topic.I personally think that somewhere in our recovery we have to understand and reframe our past in order to get permanently well. It was my own experience, at least. O'Connor does not make it clear: either it is not true for him, or it is, but he thinks the priority is addressing the now.All in all, I see this book as extremely useful, and I advise you to buy it if you have the slightest suspicion you are suffering from depression.

Title: Excellent Resource
Review: I consider the book, Undoing Depression by Dr.Richard O'Connor, PhD, one of the best books that I've recently read on the topic of depression. Not only does Dr. O'Connor have training and experience as a psychotherapist but he also has personal experience with depression. As a wife, of a husband that's recovering from depression (for over a year), this book has been informative and insightful.I greatly enjoyed this book and appreciated the hands-on activities and exercises that were clearly described and recommended. However,my husband doesn't enjoy reading very much so I doubt that he would personally read the entire book and apply what's recommended on his own. Since many people in the midst of depression are typically unmotivated and lact the energy to help themselves, I'm not sure if the people who truly need this book would choose to read it. As a family member, I am able to educate myself and read (or mention) parts of the book to my husband and make little suggestions. In this way, my husband is benefiting from Dr. O'Connors book. I would recommend Undoing Depression to those who desire more knowledge on depression and want to help a loved one. This is a helpful tool in the hands of individuals with depression and those who wish to help them.Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach You and Medication Can't Give You

Title: Excellent, but also disappointing
Review: O'Connor's approach to overcoming depression is outstanding in that it continually and clearly emphasizes the false perceptions that clinically depressed individuals hold about themselves and their environments. He also does an excellent job of explainining the unconscious dynamics that control these false perceptions. Most of the author's suggestions for recovery are very useful, though his emphasis on using willpower troubled me. There are very few depressed people who can utilize this resource, and I can't imagine bringing the subject up with the majority of my depressed clients.(I also had a problem with the many grammatical errors, but have come to expect this problem in every book I read.My main issue, however, is O'Connor's sexism. His view of the family is based on an obvious belief that the only reason women work outside the home is because the economy forces them to do so. This belief ignores women's long struggle to have choices, build careers and be taken seriously. It also ignores multiple longitudinal studies that demonstrate that "good enough" daycare and "good enough" at-home parenting are equal. On the whole, however, I would recommend this book as an unusually powerful adjunct to psychotherapy.

Review: This book showed me how to get rid of my 9 years anxiety and depression problem. It's the best and more complete self-help book I read. I recommend it to all my friends when they have emotional or psychological problems in their life. Even my psychiatrist kept note of this book's title to look it up when I told her that it helped me enormously. And for those wondering, depression can be 100% cured and you can live your life even happier than before your first depression the more you master the skills that help you heal.

Review: I loved this book so much. It took me almost a year to finish, mostly because I read small pieces almost every day, trying to change my thinking and behaviour according to the information I got from this book.I never felt so understood, honestly. I sometimes cried because I really felt like someone was there with me, understanding what's going on and where I am. I feel so much stronger after this year. I also had therapy at the same time, but very unregularly so the reading helped me a lot through those times when I didn't have any therapist to speak to.There are so many information and so many great tipps and proposals to what you can do to make things a little bit easier. I felt that the exercises were short and easy and I tried to implement many things into my daily habits.I don't know how this could help someone who is very far down in his/her depression, but I think the information alone is a great start. You don't have to do every thing at once. It took me a year to read this book and I'm almost sad that I'm done, because it feels like I lost a friend who told me exciting new things every day.I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone who struggles with depression or just simply feels like he isn't getting the most out of his life.

Review: I have had bouts of major depression throughout my life, and have read all kinds of self help books and the like in order to try to learn how to heal. This is one of the best I've ever come across. It is very comprehensive, going over all the different aspects of depression. It treats it like the complicated thing that it is - there are many different causes for it, and each individual facing depression will have different combinations of symptoms and combined illnesses. It goes over all these things, offering a wide range of treatments. Each person may need to try many things before they find what works for them, but this is a great starting point to see what might work for you. Not only does it depend on the severity of your depression, but whether you also are bipolar, have experienced trauma, have ADHD, have people around to help you, have substance abuse problems, etc. I recommend starting with this book as a great overall guide to help point you in the right direction. Even if you're not sure what will work for you, try the advice in this book and don't give up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for many of us. I didn't get cured over night but a lot of the things that helped me are in this book.
