"The perfect pick to really light a fire under my book club, and yours....A reminder that goodness, and books, can still win in this world." —New York Times Book Review
"A beautiful, big-hearted treasure of a novel." —Lily King
National Bestseller * From the award-winning author of The One-in-a-Million Boy comes a heartfelt, uplifting novel about a chance encounter at a bookstore, exploring redemption, unlikely friendships, and the life-changing power of sharing stories.
Our Reasons meet us in the morning and whisper to us at night. Mine is an innocent, unsuspecting, eternally sixty-one-year-old woman named Lorraine Daigle…
Violet Powell, a twenty-two-year-old from rural Abbott Falls, Maine, is being released from prison after serving twenty-two months for a drunk-driving crash that killed a local kindergarten teacher.
Harriet Larson, a retired English teacher who runs the prison book club, is facing the unsettling prospect of an empty nest.
Frank Daigle, a retired machinist, hasn’t yet come to grips with the complications of his marriage to the woman Violet killed.
When the three encounter each other one morning in a bookstore in Portland—Violet to buy the novel she was reading in the prison book club before her release, Harriet to choose the next title for the women who remain, and Frank to dispatch his duties as the store handyman—their lives begin to intersect in transformative ways.
How to Read a Book is an unsparingly honest and profoundly hopeful story about letting go of guilt, seizing second chances, and the power of books to change our lives. With the heart, wit, grace, and depth of understanding that has characterized her work, Monica Wood illuminates the decisions that define a life and the kindnesses that make life worth living.
"A deeply humane and touching novel; highly recommended for book clubs and fans of Shelby Van Pelt's Remarkably Bright Creatures." — Booklist

Title: Exceptional book
Review: The characters in this book, their stories, so relatable, a thin line between us all indeed. The depth of each chapter, so good. Empathy, forgiveness, encouragement, we all need to give more of this to ourselves and especially to others. The best book I have read this year. It is going to make for a really good book club discussion.

Title: Worth the read
Review: The characters were dynamic and the plot was uplifting. I gave it 4 stars because I wanted to know more in the end. Maybe that is what was intended by the author.

Title: A beautiful story of forgiveness
Review: Each character was so interesting, so captivating and so well described. I was really intrigued by the women serving time. I felt as if I knew each one and their demons. One mistake can ruin a life. It was lovely to see that mistake be forgiven. There were so many layers to this book that kept you wanting to turn each page. I need to read more from this wonderful author.

Title: Truly enjoyed
Review: No spoilers ahead-just overall impressions. Life is pretty complex and encompassing all this nuance in a book of reasonable length is a monumental task which Monica Wood navigated beautifully. How to Read a Book was simply an excellent and enjoyable read. The balance between the harsh reality of difficult times and the warmth of forgiveness/healthy relationships is just right. Not too rosy and not too heavy. I was sorry when it ended, but the ending was good. The pace was even, and character development solid. Highly recommend for a book club, which is how I came across it. Iâm going to search out more of Monica Woodâs work in the hopes thereâs more where this came from.

Title: Good storyline and easy to read
Review: Sometimes when books are written from different POVs, it is often hard to keep track of which character is speaking the narrative. The author here make it very clear who is speaking, and what characters they are! We get to know who they are and how they got where they are when the story begins. It seems a bit coincidental the first time the characters meet, but their friendship seems natural and not forced. I thought the ending was a little cliche, and I won't spoil it here. This is a good book and I enjoyed reading it.

Title: such a thoughtful book
Review: I could hardly put this book down after starting it. It was simple yet profound. It really made me think of life and how we are here, we live, and then we are gone. My mom was a high school and college English teacher and taught The Spoon River Anthology. She died at 100, reading books up until her passing. I wish she was here and I could talked about the anthology, and so many other things about life, with her. Monica Wood writes such interesting books.

Title: Surprisingly funny, tragic, and beautifully written.
Review: I wasn't at all excited about this book club pick until I began to read. The author has obviously lived and loved fully. Thanks for your insight. We humans come in so many different forms, and you've captured most of them on these pages.
