Title: Aptly Titled -- it really can change your life!
Review: One of the best health books I've read. Peggy Brill first provides an excellent explanation of how the muscular and skeletal systems work, detailing the particular "hot spots" that frequently give people trouble. She explains how each area of the body works, and addresses the causes of frequent discomforts in each area. The information she provides is interesting and easy to follow. The book is worth the price just on the basis of the first few chapters alone. But the best part is the program. She provides detailed instructions on deceptively easy exercises to address the most frequent physical ailments we women have. The exercises are so easy to perform, I wondered if I was really accomplishing anything worthwhile. But I discovered that immediately, even after doing the program the very first time, I felt so much better! Minor aches and pain were releived, and I had the energy and stamina I needed to make it through the day without my body starting to fatigue and ache. And since implementing the program each morning, I've only felt better and better.Peggy Brill really understands the workings of women's bodies, and the various stressors we are challenged with. I'm a 40-year-old mom of four, and, though I stay physically active, had just assumed that the various aches and pains I've been developing were just an undeniable part of getting older, and were something everyone just had to learn to live with. But this program has proven that theory wrong; Peggy explains how proper alignment, good posture and a strong core can keep you feeling healthy and pain-free no matter what age you are. I'm going to recommend this program to my own children, my sister-in-law, and my 65-year-old mother-in-law. Peggy Brill mentions several times in this book that helping women live healthy pain-free lives is a passion for her and her life's work; it's obvious that this book and the program it contains are the results of her dedication to that goal. I'd recommend it to any woman of any age.A note on the Kindle edition: there are a few places where text boxes are inserted into the text which can be disorienting until you recognize that the seemingly incongruent info is actually a text box. Other than that, the edition is easy to read, and the exercises are easy to follow, with the descriptive text appearing immediately following the pictures. It's not difficult to put together the pictures of the exercises with their descriptions.

Title: This is exactly what I needed
Review: I found this book after learning that I had a long term foot injury. I was searching for exercises that I could do that would be gentle enough to not exacerbate my foot problems. Even pilates at the local Y was causing me problems. Then I found this book and proceeded to follow through the program, advancing through the 3 phases and even following the weight training exercises for a period of time. I know that I was able to keep this program going for about a full year. I think I lost around 20 lbs between starting and going through to the long term maintenance phase. That was over 3 years ago and life got in the way. I'm starting this back up and am glad I'm making this a priority for myself again.Getting started is a little rough because the exercises are atypical and I felt like I had to read and re-read them to get the gist. But even if I'm not 100% compliant with every detail, I'm feeling trimmer and don't have any pain. It would be wonderful if she did make a DVD. You might want to get the spiral bound copy to easily refer to the pictures and remember the ordering. I created a script that I read into a digital voice recorder and played back to myself to make things easier. Because of all this, the beginning phases will take more like 45 minutes to an hour. Just know by the time you get to the 3rd phase, it is closer to 15 - 20 minutes and more of a breeze to get through. One of the best things about this book, especially for anyone short on time is that the workouts won't leave you drained of energy, like turbo boxing or the brazilian but lift stuff did for me.I am very grateful to the author, Peggy for a fantastic book that really did change my life!

Title: You have to start somewhere
Review: You may wonder why I am writing a review for a women's physical exercise-therapy book, being as I am a man. It's for my wife, of course.My wife is getting on in years. She has never exercised or done anything athletic. Now that she has acquired some (quiet a few) physical complaints -- it hurts to raise her arm, her knee is stiff when she walks, etc. -- she realizes she has to do something because it is getting worse, fast. She asked for my help (after years of my telling her she has to do some kind of exercise or she will wither away).I didn't want to drag her to the gym with me because I thought that would be overkill for the physical condition she is in. Instead, I started taking books out of the library. After a dozen or so books I chose "The Core Program" by Peggy Brill, PT. I didn't choose it because it was a women's book. It was, in my opinion, the best book for the circumstances. Like many books of its type, it gives a lot of useful information. But the information in this book seemed to be directed more toward my wife's condition than most of the other books I read. Also, the starting program was easier and geared more toward what I thought she needed.I bought the book, gave my wife the Hot Spot test, and started her on the program.The exercises were not as easy as they looked. My wife looked like a fledging new born bird learning to fly when she first started the Core exercises. But she did learn. After four weeks she could almost do all the exercises on her own. After six weeks she was doing them pretty good and had cut her time from forty-five minutes to seventeen minutes. I gave her another Hot Spot test. She showed improvement and she is now well into the second phase of the program. She is doing well; she is sticking to the program and I have no doubt she will continue to show improvement.There is one area that I will take off one half a star. I applaud Ms. Brill in knowing that additional strength training is needed beyond the Core Program (Chapter Ten). But I can not support using machines for strength exercises, except in particular situations. And I will never understand why people pay money to exercise in a gym and then sit in a comfortable machine that only exercises a few muscles (among other negative aspects that using machines have). An example: Hip Adduction and Abduction (pages 226 & 227). My advice: do what I do. Buy a decent ankle cuff. They are available on the internet for $10 to $20. All gyms have pulley systems. Use the lower pulley for your Adduction and Abduction exercises.Another good book I ran across is "Frame Work" by Nicholas A. DiNubile, M.D. This book was a little advanced and went beyond what my wife needed to get started. But should you run across this book in your local library or book store, take a look on pages 121, 128, and 215. This will give you an idea of the variety of exercises you can do with an ankle cuff and pulley, which will exercise more muscle groups than sitting in a machine.Ms. Brill has written a book that I think can be useful to women of all ages. I certainly recommend this book and program for any woman that has been sedentary for a long length of time. And for young women who think they are in good condition; maybe you are and maybe you aren't but, it never hurts to gain a little additional knowledge about your body or, too soon to start a program to take care of it.This may sound corny but while reading the book, I could not help but feel that Ms. Brill wrote this book with a great deal of compassion.

Review: I bought this book on the advice of a practitioner whose opinion I respect. In most ways I found it an excellent addition to my normal exercise regime, which is walking.The exercises are valuable, particularly so as they can be undertaken a few at a time. My 15 minutes comprises some simple some a little more demanding. One excellent introduction was an exercise early in the book, that I was tempted to do immediately - a good feature for people who take time to get aroudn to doing the work.Here I come to the feature that did not appeal to me. I found the time to get to the exercises rather off putting. I wanted to begin, not read about the whys of the exercises. So, if you are like me, flip through the early section quickly.Once I got to the exercises, I found them a good 15 minutes work out.

Review: I first bought Peggy Brill's book "Instant Relief:Tell me where it hurts". The stretches and exercises were so simple and the relief, for me immediate so that is the reason why I bought the "Core Program" book.....a long time ago. Recently, I purchased another copy to pass on to my Mom who is 90 years young and is starting to have issues walking.Each exercise is well explained (how to do it properly and the purpose) and accompanied by images showing how to execute the exercise/stretch properly. She strings together a series of exercises (pictures) over a two facing pages (you can xerox that) and has three levels (core, intermediate and ultimate). Great book! I have back/knee problems and I use the exercises to reduce the pain by stretching the areas.

Review: Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease...,"aging spine". My Dr suggested Tylenol to ease the discomfort at night. Did physio exercises and massage. I had almost accepted the fact that my "bike-riding, active days "were numbered. Started the Core Program and at the end of the initial 3 weeks I noticed a definite improvement...less pain in the night and no tenseness and lower back pain during the day. It has become an essential part to my day. I am now back doing the activities enjoy. Thank you!
