Founder of The Boston Beer Company, brewer of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and a key catalyst of the American craft beer revolution, Jim Koch offers his unique perspective when it comes to business, beer, and turning your passion into a successful company or career.
In 1984, it looked like an unwinnable David and Goliath struggle: one guy against the mammoth American beer industry. When others scoffed at Jim Koch’s plan to leave his consulting job and start a brewery that would challenge American palates, he chose a nineteenth-century family recipe and launched Samuel Adams. Now one of America’s leading craft breweries, Samuel Adams has redefined the way Americans think about beer and helped spur a craft beer revolution.
In Quench Your Own Thirst, Koch offers unprecedented insights into the whirlwind ride from scrappy start-up to thriving public company. His innovative business model and refreshingly frank stories offer counterintuitive lessons that you can apply to business and to life.
Koch covers everything from finding your own Yoda to his theory on how a piece of string can teach you the most important lesson you’ll ever learn about business. He also has surprising advice on sales, marketing, hiring, and company culture. Koch’s anecdotes, quirky musings, and bits of wisdom go far beyond brewing. A fun, engaging guide for building a career or launching a successful business based on your passions, Quench Your Own Thirst is the key to the ultimate dream: being successful while doing what you love.

Title: Cheers (and five stars) to Mr. Koch!
Review: This book was a very entertaining and insightful look into what is clearly a very creative and brilliant mind. Jim Koch has clearly thought a great deal about how to run a company, and his wisdom here is worth far more than the price I paid for the book. This isn't so much a how-to guide for starting a business or even a biography. Rather, the book reads as a series of anecdotes that progress roughly from the beginning of the Boston Beer Company to the present day. Koch's writing style is extremely clear and, at times, quite lively and feisty. It is a short read - or at least it seemed that way since I couldn't put the book down. Not only that, I was so impressed with the business that Koch has built that I immediately went out and purchased shares of the company (which as of this writing are down significantly from the highs - and much cheaper than the big brewers). I mainly bought this book because I enjoy Sam Adams beer and was interested in what Koch had to say, but after reading Koch's stories I am even more of a fan.

Title: Insights from an entrepreneur's journey
Review: This engaging read is an insightful book about lessons learned while growing a business from a two-person operation making cold calls at Boston bars to a billion-dollar, publicly-traded company. Instead of just recounting the Sam Adams story, the book is organized into about forty short chapters that each detail an anecdote from the history of Boston Beer Co., and the lessons that Jim learned from that moment. Many of the lessons are drawn from successful efforts, but there are also tough looks at some of the missteps and setbacks along the way.Jimâs writing style is enjoyable and easy-to-read, and he comes across as someone whoâs legitimately passionate about his product and company. My biggest take-aways came from the sections on setting goals (unifying goals should be challenging, but feasible), the benefits of putting product quality first, and building lasting and powerful company values. There are glimpses into behind-the-scenes moments of the early days of craft beer that should tickle beer lovers, but for the most part the focus of the book is Jimâs entrepreneurial journey.

Title: Excellent book!
Review: Loved this book! I started drinking craft beer with a Sam Adams twenty years ago, however due to the vast amount of new beers being offered at bars, restaurants, and supermarkets, I admit to have long forgotten about this precious jewel in the craft beer community.I have to say that Jim definitely delivers eloquently in this book, full of anecdotes and humor as to how Boston Beer Company came to be 2nd biggest in the US. As an entrepreneur this book is very inspirational. If youâve read Sam Calagione and Ken Grossmanâs books, then this book is a must!

Title: One of the most easily applicable and practical business books I've ever read.
Review: I have probably 100+ business books on my shelf... most of which I've never made it all the way through. This one is chock full of practical advice, is written in a conversational style, and contains a lot of practical life advice as well. A MUST READ for anyone thinking about going out on their own in business.

Title: Americaâs brewers have finally re-emerged from Prohibition!
Review: Excellent recollection of what it took to revive American brewing! Was hoping to learn just a bit more about how the company dealt with regulators, the lingering effects of Prohibition, and the myriad differences between states and countries in their treatment of producers of alcoholic beverages. Will there be a sequel?

Review: Jim Koch wrote a humble but funny and inspiring account about his inherent passion for brewing, being from a long line of beer brewers, and how he built the craft brewing company of Samuel Adams over the past three decades. Even when recounting a negative experience, he always puts a positive spin on it, considering it another valuable lesson learned. He shows us by example how every lesson he has learned either in business or in life can be interchangeable, to make one a smarter person or entrepreneur. Just based on this fact alone made QUENCH YOUR OWN THIRST an entertaining and intelligent read.My only problem with the book was that there were no pictures. Jim talks about so many fascinating people, marketing concepts and product innovations that it would have been nice to put some faces to the names, and see the evolving beer cans, glasses, table tents and displays he so passionately speaks about.
