Title: Short, simple, convincing, and wise; it tell you what to do and why to do it.
Review: The title describes the book precisely. This is a straightforward guide, for people like retirement savers and 401(k) plan participants. It sets out a simple and effective approach to investing--a portfolio of only three total market index funds. It's short, and it's simple. It tells what to do, it tells why to do it, and it tells you why this approach is better than most. I give it five stars because it is a fine presentation of a sound strategy that I agree with, and full of common sense and wisdom.I think it's important to note that Taylor Larimore does not work in the investment industry. He is not neutral; he is obviously a fan of John C. Bogle, and he tells about his connection in this book. But he does not have any financial interests in the approach he recommends. This book joins the select group of "disinterested investment advice." At the very least, read this book to inoculate yourself against infection from nonsense from self-serving parties. The book is advocacy for Larimore's point of view. He makes frequent appeals to authority as well as to individual testimonials by "Bogleheads." Financial gearheads will find it short on numbers. There isn't a single chart in the book; no standard deviations, no factors, no Sharpe ratios. I am not sure that he makes the case for the three-fund portfolio having quantitatively "less risk" than other approaches. Qualitatively, he supports this claim by pointing out sources of risk in other approaches that are not found in this one: advisor risk, fund manager risk, individual stock risk, and sector risk.Bluntly, I think the price is too high, given the length of the book, and that's a shame because the book is likely to reach a smaller audience than it deserves.

Title: Taylor did all the work for us
Review: Taylor Larimore is affectionately known as the King of the Bogleheads, he has a lifetime of experience and made all the mistakes along the way so we don't have to. Taylor was born in 1924 so needless to say, he has a huge arsenal of experience that will benefit every person who aspires to have wealth in their retirement years and for those in the accumulation phase who want to build wealth along the way. He has read hundreds of books and has tried what works and what doesn't (in short, Taylor did all the work for us). Along the way, Taylor befriend John "Jack" Bogle who is a living legend in the investment world and beyond. Jack and Taylor are definitely cut from the same cloth. They both are selfless people who rather benefit society than enrich themselves. Although Jack Bogle has more wealth than most of us will ever have, if he decided to take profits from Vanguard, he will probably be one of the richest people in the world along with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, but instead, Jack decided to structure Vanguard in such a way that the profits came back to us average folks. Taylor realized how much he gained from Jack's creation (the "Index Fund") and calls his home in Miami "The House that Jack Built". Taylor is one of us. A working man who accomplished many success in his life and throughout his working years, saved enough to retire without worry due to the 3 fund portfolio. Taylor's 3 fund portfolio will work at any wealth level and the simple but elegant solution will give you a worry free investment life and a worry-free retirement. Imagine not having to worry about retirement in your golden years. Once you get the message of the 3 fund portfolio, you will be able to ignore the stock market and get on with your life. For those of us (including myself) who really hate long winded investment books that give the average retail investor too much information and not enough real life action steps, fear not, Taylor gave us a ton of information in a small and readable book. It is exactly what the average person needs to become a successful investor without needing a business degree to get through it. Thank you Taylor for giving all of us average folks the 3 fund portfolio and this great little book on how to implement it. Also, thank you for being the person you are and teaching us what took you many years to learn. And as always, I'm proud to call myself a Boglehead. Thank you Jack and Taylor, you have changed so many lives with your work and will change the family trees of many generations to come.

Title: Easy to understand
Review: This book is easy to understand and the strategy they explain makes sense. Although I got the impression that the strategy in mainly focused to long term retirement plans.

Title: The Three Fund Portfolio makes self-directed investing very approachable and dare I say it fun!
Review: Having read The Bogleheads Guide to Retirement many times and learned more from it each time that I read it in different stages towards retirement. Like many other things that are high value they require a significant focus and time commitment read, truly comprehend, and make a determination of what one needs to action, when and why. That can be off-putting for many people who may not believe that they are "smart enough" to grasp the concepts and gain confidence in "yes I can and will manage my own portfolio, after all I'm the only one responsible for the financial outcome".The Three Fund Portfolio does an outstanding job of making the core subject of selecting a simple and effective portfolio very approachable and dare I say it rather fun!I gave them both away together as Christmas presents to friends who I know will benefit from them, with the message "The most useful books I've ever read, adopted, and seen the most value out of in my life."Many, many to thanks Taylor Larimore for the generous contribution of your most valuable asset -- the gift of knowledge and wisdom.

Title: Well written book on constructing a simple, but effective investment portfolio
Review: A simple, inexpensive portfolio using low cost index funds, in an investment portfolio can often beat a complex, actively managed one. This book explains clearly how to effectively construct one.

Title: Great information but marred by multiple publisher errors
Review: The subject matter of the book was handled very well, and I learned quite a bit. Mr. Larimore did a great writing job. Unfortunately the publisher of the book dropped the ball. In my copy several pages are repeated, sometimes several times. Pages 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 are in order, then pages 39, 40, 41 and 42 reappear. Pages 44, 45, and 46 are in order, then you jump back to 43, 44, and 45 again. Pages 50 and 51 are followed by pages 47, 49 and 50. These typesetting errors are distracting and reduce the credibility of an otherwise informative book. This really needs an immediate correction and an apology from the publisher. I will give (hopefully corrected) copies of this book to my kids.

Review: $20 for this... really? While the book contains a few interesting parts I feel like I paid a small book to have 50% of it quoting people praising the method, 20% promoting product/brokers and 20% useful information. This book feels more like a brainwash to evince all other method by quoting people praising the 3 funds portfolio method constantly than actually providing you with tangible, actionable information (not that it doesn't, but it's small compared to the size of the book). Do yourself a favor and just go to bogleheads.org directly to learn the real stuff.
