The year was 1896, the woman was Alice Guy-Blaché, and the film was The Cabbage Fairy. It was less than a minute long. Guy-Blaché, the first female director, made hundreds of movies during her career.
Thousands of women with passion and commitment to storytelling followed in her footsteps. Working in all aspects of the movie industry, they collaborated with others to create memorable images on the screen. This book pays tribute to the spirit, ambition, grit and talent of these filmmakers and artists.
With more than 1200 women featured in the book, you will find names that everyone knows and loves—the movie legends. But you will also discover hundreds and hundreds of women whose names are unknown to you: actresses, directors, stuntwomen, screenwriters, composers, animators, editors, producers, cinematographers and on and on. Stunning photographs capture and document the women who worked their magic in the movie business.
Perfect for anyone who enjoys the movies, this photo-treasury of women and film is not to be missed.

Title: An amazingly beautiful book!
Review: Jill Tietjen and Barbara Bridges have hit a home run with this absolutely beautiful hardcover book about the rise of women in the film industry over the last century. From the gorgeous cover, to the dedication page with a photo of women editing film at Universal Studios in the 1920s, to the forward by Abigail Disney, to the introduction by the authors, to the full page color photos and explanations at the beginning of each decade, to the color-coded tabs separating the decades, to the icons that depict which roles the women had in filmmaking (with 26 categories including director, producer, actress, costume designer, lighting, composer, etc), this book is thoroughly researched and excellently organized into a fascinating collection of facts and photos about the many talented women who have overcome obstacles relating to their sex and times and who have boldly contributed to the Hollywood film industry. This publication is important in bringing to light many of the women who have added so much to the advancement of the film industry, but whose accomplishments may have become obscured over the years. Hollywood Her Story is a valuable contribution to the preservation of womens' roles in history. Jill Tietjen also co-wrote Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America. I'm grateful to these authors for bringing to light the achievements of women in different aspects of history. Very well done!

Title: Amazing book tells important stories about fascinating women in hollywood films!!
Review: This beautiful hard-cover book is definitely the 'GO TO" book about women in films. This is a wonderful account of the important role women have had in films from the 1890's to the present day. Every page is packed with interesting information about the women that inspired, directed, authored, animated, costume designed and acted in over more than a century. Although traditional history has largely excluded the telling of these women's stories, this book helps fill in the truth that many (if not most) of our favorite films could not have been made without these extraordinary women. This book is literally filled from cover to cover with beautiful pictures, inspiring quotes and historical facts about the feminine power and influence in Hollywood films. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Worth every penny...

It is a fun and stimulating book about women who were creative, talented, persistent and successful in the production of films from the 1890âs to the present. Title: Beautiful and Fascinating
Review: This is a gorgeous book about the history of women in Hollywood. The photos and selection of women to feature clearly took much research. This book brings to light the long history of women in movie making - I was not aware of the early role of women in film. I also enjoyed the many accomplishments of more recent women in the industry. This is the type of book you pick up over and over.
