A raucous and revealing oral history of the birth of the adult film industry, The Other Hollywood peels back the candy coating to let the true story be told -- by the stars, movie makers, and other industry players who lived it. And what a story it is: Through hundreds of original interviews, contemporary newspaper accounts, police reports, court testimony, and more, Legs McNeil and coauthors Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia trace today's billion-dollar industry from its makeshift, mob-connected origins to the Internet age. Along the way we encounter porn stars such as Linda Lovelace, John Holmes, Traci Lords, and Savannah -- along with countless mainstream stars, politicians, FBI agents, and more.

Epic, hilarious, and moving, The Other Hollywood contributes to the porn industry the one thing missing in all previous accounts: a vivid, tragicomic, irresistible humanity.

Title: If you like Sex, Mafia or Drugs, this is the book for you.
Review: Could not put this 600 page book down. So fascinating and well researched. Bought it sight unseen after reading Legs McNeil’s other book “Please Kill Me” and I loved them both so much! Great stories from the people who lived these crazy lives.

Title: Well Done
Review: Covers the subject quite well. Much of the book is about the Feds trying to bust the business. Mob money is indeed part of the story. Sharon Mitchell and Linda Lovelace are interviewed here, as is Chuck Traynor. Does seem to dwell on negative, headline grabbing events. like the drug related murders that John Holmes was connected to, and apparently responsible for.

Title: Rollicking Roll Through the Hollywood Hay
Review: This is a fun, twisted trip through the sex, drugs, and dirty laundry behind Hollywood's dirty movie industry.Done as an oral history, it is a fast read, at times funny, at times tragic, at times absurd (MIPORN, for example) but never dull.Note on Kindle edition: no pictures??I still loved it.

Title: Worth reading but misses the mark
Review: Although professionally put together and full of colorful first-hand stories, I found this book ultimately unsatisfying. Pity - I *wanted* very much to like it. It started out with high promise (dealing with the pre-1960's films) and it was great to hear some of the pioneer voices in the adult film industry speak. But by the time I finished the entire volume, I was frustrated and annoyed.Mostly, I think this book is just a victim of bad labelling. It's billed as being an (oral) inside history of the adult film industry, but at heart it's not any kind of real history at all. It's actually more like a big yellow tabloid in book format, directly descended from one of those cheesy "True Crime" or "Police Gazette" magazines of the 1950's.Granted, the porn industry has some shady past, with an ample share of sad, spicy, and gruesome tales. But a book that simply wants to get down and wallow in each one of these horror stories in turn (in breathless and endless detail) should just give up all pretensions and call itself: "SEX, DRUGS, CRIME AND DEATH" or something. If the aim is simply to sell books, such candor might even help. If the aim was to craft a good history of film porn, on the other hand, they should have tuned the mix a little better than they have here. The early chapters of this book show a heartbreakingly talented promise that is not fulfilled by the remainder, where the authors go haring off after each new Scandal in its turn. Not only does this make the book spotty (as far as keeping any coherent historical narrative going) but chapter after chapter after chapter on FBI and vice squad and other police doings left me with a sneaking sympathy for the "crooks" without telling me much about adult films. These law-and-order chapters, and all of the drug tales, are indeed one legitimate part of the whole Story of film porn. But given such huge play, these countless pages merely detract from what the book is allegedly trying to do: tell the story of how and why porn exploded into being during the last half of the 20th century. It's like trying to tell the story of Hollywood Mark I by discussing ONLY Fatty Arbuckle, Marilyn Monroe, Rock Hudson, and so forth. Such scandal stories can be written up in full -- and the more the merrier -- but make more sense if there's a sufficient volume of background on the art of the movies, their history, and the films themselves. For the stated subject of this particular book, no such background exists - and this volume helps the lack only a little.THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD blithely tunes in on the gossip, and tunes out on the actual film titles, the non-mob production and releasing companies, the technical underpinnings, the writers, the directors, and the many, many other stars and starlets who worked in the industry through the years. (Here's a hint: some of them DIDN'T kill themselves.) Even the relatively limited number of insiders they do feature are often edited to be commenting mainly on the passing scandal de jour. What an immense waste of resources!I recognize the effort that went into this project. I appreciate the non-judgemental approach of the authors - particularly in these regressive and repressive times. And I would never dare to disagree with the blessed Saint Annie S., who has already given this book her imprimatur here. But my advice to the casual reader might be to try to find this volume at a library, or second-hand, or wait until it comes out in paperback. It IS well worth reading: for all its missed opportunities and problems of focus, it's still one of the best books published on the subject so far.Because meanwhile, of course, a REAL history of the adult film industry has yet to be written...

Title: Only a collection of old interviews!!!
Review: If you beleave Linda Lovelace' "Ordeal" and "Out of bondage" check out the 1976 part of U.S. attorney Larry Parrish who interviewed Linda to get "Deep Throat" out of "busyness" and all people involved into jail.

Review: As with Please Kill Me, the format of pure interviews works really well. Running commentary might assist a bit, but being able to juxtapose perceived experiences between those actually involved, and the honesty they bring, makes this a fascinating and occasionally unpleasant view into porn. But because it never explicitly takes a stand for or against, there is no moralising so can be read by most (adults!).

Review: You will be considering buying this book for one of two reasons. (A) Tittilation factor or (B) All the claims of "exploitation" cannot be justified, can they?If you are falling into (A) you will be very disappointed and probably give up after ten pages. If (B), then grit your teeth because this is a very hard, and very long look at the porn industry. And it isn't pretty. The books looks chronologically at the development of adult entertainment, through to tax dodges, drugs busts, suicides and rapes. All the major events are covered, from deepthroat to debbie does dallas to the rise of HIV and onwards.I particular, I found the section covering the 90's and noughties pretty hard, where performers knew exactly what they were getting themselves into and believed they could beat the system (incidentally, they didn't).This will no stop the consumption of pornography, but it may stop the belief that it is a victimless industry.
