Losing the trial of his life could mean losing everything.

When a young reporter is found dead and a prominent Philadelphia businessman is accused of her murder, Mick McFarland finds himself involved in the case of his life. The defendant, David Hanson, is Mick's best friend, and the victim, a TV news reporter, had reached out to Mick for legal help only hours before her death.

Mick's played both sides of Philadelphia's courtrooms. As a top-shelf defense attorney and former prosecutor, he knows all the tricks of the trade. And he'll need every one of them to win.

But as the trial progresses, he's disturbed by developments that confirm his deepest fears. This trial, one that already hits too close to home, may jeopardize his firm, his family—everything. Now Mick's only way out is to mastermind the most brilliant defense he's ever spun, one that may cross every legal and moral boundary.

Title: An Awesome Read Packed Full of Suspense and Intrigue!
Review: When most people think of a good legal novel, the author that usually comes to mind is John Grisham. Don’t get me wrong, Grisham is a great legal author, but I’m happy to say I found an attorney turned author who is just as good, if not better—William L. Myers, Jr.Wow, talk about a legal novel to take the reader to the next level, A Criminal Defense certainly did that and more! OMG, I was literally mind blown by the twists and turns and the entire justice system and law itself. Having worked in law for almost 30 years, I’ve come to appreciate what attorneys do and how they operate. When I tell you former prosecutor Mick McFarland who recently left the other side to start his own private practice to fight on the defense side of the law had a massive case that would ultimately test his limits of law and life itself, would truly be an understatement.A young up-and-coming TV reporter, Jennifer Yamura, had a promising career and was about to prove to the world why, when she ended up dead at the bottom of her basement steps. Ms. Yamura was about to crack open a police corruption matter before the grand jury, when she reached out to Mick to ask for his help in this battle. They set up a time to meet, and no sooner had Mick etched the appointment in his book, ink not quite dry, Ms. Yamura returns his call and needs to push the meeting back. No worries, Mick got this.It was about this time when he learns an old law school chum of his is accused of murdering the very young reporter he was supposed to meet with. David Hanson, an attorney, and a businessman, asks for Mick to represent him. At first glance, Mick wasn’t sure this was a good idea since he was too close to the defendant, but being in private practice isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and needing the money, he decides to take David’s case. David was a millionaire with plenty of money to go around. His company was on the verge of bringing tons of jobs to the Philadelphia area. Unfortunately, David found himself on the wrong side of the law. It was one thing for crooked police officers to be involved in a corruption scandal, but for him to be facing a murder wrap was something David couldn’t deal with.Talk about pressure. Mick was now faced with having to defend the biggest case of his trial career, but his toughest battle was yet to be discovered. His wife Piper was distant, as of late, and hung out more with her girlfriends than she did with him or their daughter, Gracie. Sure, when she was home, she was physically there, but her mind was on the other side of town, or was it? Mick knew his marriage was in trouble, but he couldn’t quite place his finger on what was causing them to grow apart?Tommy, Mick’s brother, and ex-con turned private investigator for his private practice, had a better relationship with Mick’s wife than he did. How could that possibly be? As Mick deals with David’s trial, his brother’s strange disappearances and reappearances and Piper’s distant attitude, the reader will be taken down so many mental paths, you’ll be hard pressed to figure out which one is the right one. This was an outstanding read! The legalese was to die for. My mind soaked up every word like a sponge. I could not get enough of this. I guarantee you, the drama and secrets that unfold in this story will have you on a natural high. What I truly loved most about this novel, outside of the legal jargon, was the realism to it. In life, this is the way things sometimes goes. Lady Justice isn’t always fair and yes, sometimes she can be blind and sometimes she can be downright unforgiving, but make no mistake, that’s the way the legal system works. When you factor in a great attorney who truly knows the law and, let’s not forget, both sides of the courtroom, you have an ah-maazing plot! Mick McFarland was one hell of an attorney. He knew how to play Lady Justice’s strings.Myers wrote a very real, very down to earth type of character. The situations Mick found himself in was heartfelt. I absolutely loved this story. I realize this story isn’t for everyone, but coming from a legal background I understood all sides whether I agreed with them or not. At the end of the day, it’s not about how we feel about things, but the way things are. As I love to say, it is what it is! And that’s just fact.Mello & June, gives A Criminal Defense five bangs of the gavel for this novel! OMG, an all-around great book with plenty of twists and turns. This is a novel that makes you think—and I mean think hard. It makes the reader look at himself. It makes you question people’s motives. Things are not always as they appear. Well, well done, Myers! You’ve made me a fan! Oh, yes indeed! I can’t wait to read more work from this author. I’ve added Myers to my favorite attorney list of Scott Pratt and Pamela Samuels-Young. You needn’t worry, Myers is in great company!

Title: More Twists than a Pretzel
Review: 4..5 of 5, I liked it. I don't understand ratings sometimes. Some say the top rating is I loved it. Sometimes I probably do love a story. Another top rating is "amazing" which few books ever really are. I've read thousands of books and ultimately the rating is an individual choice based on the book being relative to something or other which is usually arbitrary.I was particularly impressed with the number of twists and the complex links between multiple characters that is only slowly revealed as you near the climax and conclusion of the book. I didn't actually see the the "big reveal" coming. I knew it was coming but would not have guessed. I think the author was clever to be able to get that pass me as someone who has read so much and studied writing so thoroughly. There's my 4-5 stars. The author entertained me, kept me interested, and I felt fulfilled finishing the book. I have never been satisfied with a Stephen King "conclusion" so that makes Mr. Myers better than King in my relative comparison... I liked the book and do recommend it.A side note, I 'read' this book entirely on audio while also doing other things. It is possible if I was sitting with the ebook reading or reading and listening with all my attention I would anticipated the twists I ultimately did not expect which ultimately surprised me and left me feeling good about the book. For a legal thriller it was actually more of a mystery novel. I read some of the negative reviews as I wonder sometimes why my opinion is so different from others who read a book. As is often the case I think about half of them are valid enough, but like too often, several just aren't fair. It is as if you go to a 5 star restaurant, have a great meal, then leave hating the place because of the drapes on the windows, or the choice of design on the plate, or the waiter's green Mohawk haircut. That it was a great meal is irrelevant. If you're going to decide on a book based on someone's review read between the lines as much as what they say. I have never liked Glenn Close and the thought of her is disgusting to me. I don't even remember the name of the movie. She played a woman terribly angry with a married lover, Michael Douglas, and played a real nightmare of a character that effected me emotionally so much I hated her as well as the character. It's crazy. Nothing is real about it. I don't know Glenn Close. I do hate her politics but she's probably a lovely person. The acting was obviously an award winning piece of work as her "play acting" did have such a dramatic effect on me. So I could say, she was one of the best ever, in my experience. Still can't stand her. And that's my point.I liked this book. I think it deserves 4.5 stars. I know how hard it is to write a novel and how much harder still it is to get it published, although it is child's play in this electronic era. I've read dozens of books that would never have been published in earlier days with excellent reason. They are garbage. But they get published today and even get hundreds of 5 star reviews. This one would have made it out of a slush pile in a blind submission. A slush pile reader would have been impressed enough to argue for the book, it would have been read by other editors, and a majority of them would have agreed. Committees would argue over the book, specially a "new" author. Would they dare take a chance and almost certainly lose money? How much would they commit to advertising so they could break even or make some money.... This book would have made it. Congratulations Mr. Myers.I would point you to my review web site or other places you can read my reviews but Amazon just deletes it or rejects the submission out of hand. They will accept this one as it passes all their censorship checklists. I only submit a review to them one in a hundred books due to their "policies". Let's see how this one goes. I did get this book free but did pay for the audio that I actually listened to. Both great deals, and even the retail price is fair for the entertainment it will provide.

Review: So many twists and turns, very hard to put down. Superb character development right to the end. I can usually tell where a story is going about 2/3 through a book, but not this one. Brilliant writing.

Review: This was good though rather conventional legal thriller; the plot was well constructed, with some nice twists and turns at the end, the character development was in my view average. Not a great read, yet a decent one.

Review: This was a well written legal thriller with twists, turns, secrets and mystery. The plot, although well thought out, did stretch belief at the end but this didn't spoil it for me. It's fiction and I don't have to believe every action is completely realistic as I prefer to be entertained. I can't elaborate without spoilers but suffice to say I'd recommend reading it for yourself as it is a really good read. There's murder, blackmail, infidelity and corruption within a story based around a legal case but the whole book is not in the courtroom, there's plenty of action outside. There's some swearing but it's in context, there's reference to sex, I remember one sexual encounter is briefly described and there's violence, however nothing seemed over the top.I look forward to reading the next book from this new author when it's available.
