In this approachable guidebook, author and coffee expert Brian W. Jones demystifies specialty coffee's complexities, teaches you how to buy the best beans and brewing equipment, offers in-depth primers for mastering various slow-coffee techniques (including pour over, French press and moka pot), and supplies you with dozens of recipes for invigorating coffee-based drinks and cocktails. Title: Great complement to other coffee books
Review: This is a perfect companion to other coffee books you might have or for those who are new to coffee and just want some general information. It does not go in depth about the history of coffee or roasting methods or anything like that, but that's fine; it's actually a strength. It is concise and to the point with its information about beans, brewing methods, and tools. It focuses on how to brew coffee in a variety of ways with general and step-by-step instruction for any level. I have been using a French Press for a long time with different results (How long do I brew it? Is this coarse enough or should it be less so? Do I mix immediately or let it steep and then mix? and so on) and would constantly find myself online looking for guidance from any site or person to remind me. With this book, I have a go to source that is quick to check and very clear. It also gives me insight into the other brewing methods that I have wondered about but have been too lazy to look into. The recipes in the back look interesting, and I might try some someday, but for now, the coffee itself is fine. I may even start drinking it sans milk now.

Title: Lots of information well written but
Review: This is a short, well written book about buying and brewing coffee. It contains information about how and where coffee is grown and processed, a bit about its history and the various types of coffee and equipment and ways to use the equipment. It also has a few coffee recipes in the back for mostly alcohol and coffee drinks. What it doesnât discuss in any way is air roasting versus drum roasting. It also doesnât give ballpark prices for coffee equipment and sometimes omits any mention of brands for this equipment. It doesnât discuss the very large variety of equipment either. Is a glass French Press better or worse than a stainless steel one? Is it better to have ceramic burrs in a burr grinder or metal ones? Itâs a super book for beginners and those wanting to learn more but I wish/hope the author writes a Volume 2 and discusses more thoroughly the topics mentioned and maybe adds more info on what places for single-origin coffees have what taste profiles. Worth the money just donât expect a complete breakdown on everything coffee related.
