Sam Brice, the perfect rugged hero, is involved with a young widow named Janice Gantry. But when she vanishes, Janice leaves behind a trail of blackmail, murder and a man at war with his own sense of duty.

Sam is too curious to steer clear of the mystifying disappearances off the Florida Keys, too stubborn to avoid making enemies with a cunning criminal and killer, and perhaps too enraged to do what he knows he must to save the one woman who matters: become as cold, impersonal, and deadly as an assassin.

Title: A cleverly twisted plot
Review: As I make my way through MacDonald's novels I would call this the best one. The links to the McGee novels can be seen in the references to Fort Lauderdale and Bahia Mar.I guess one can even say Sam Brice is on the salvage businesses, in this case salvaging wrecked cars and he doesn't go on to make a career of dealing with bad guys. But Brice certainly exhibits the self analysis and social commentary that are a staple of MacDonald's stories. As usual a tribe of details that paint a picture of the time and place. Everything from bathwater warm Gulf water to swarms of mosquitoes. And a few people have to die. A stapler of this type of crime fiction and dealt with by the suspension of disbelief or perhaps the opposite, acceptance be it makes a good story but is really imaginary. The use of the helicopter at the end anticipates the evolving role of the helicopter in air Sea rescue.I am continuing to enjoy my punctuated journey through the writing of John MacDonald.

Title: Very entertaining.
Review: My one criticism is a few too many startling coincidences. However it is fast-paced and exciting. I love McDonald but he seems to mix up football positions for his main character. Switching him from offense to defense.

Title: John D. McDonald books are almost always great like this one
Review: Despite the fact that this book was written about 50 years ago, the story still holds the reader’s attention. As always, McDonald’s character’s are well developed and interesting. He was a master and an a influence on his genre. I love the McGee series but his stand alone books are equally fun. McDonald is one of the all time greats.

Title: A Masterpiece By a Grand Master!
Review: A beautifully written mystery. John D. MacDonald is a master at creating a likable character and putting him smack in the middle of a mystery. The writing sings with effortless beauty.

Title: Trav McGee has a doppelganger.
Review: Where is Janet Gantry? was originally published about 3 years before the first Travis McGee novel ever saw the light of day. Its protagonist and first person narrator, Sam Brice, bears an uncanny resemblance to the better known McGee.This is a skillfully crafted book which is part crime novel, part action-adventure and part romance. Written with a brand of prose notable for its evocative descriptions, Where is Janet Gantry? tells a compelling story that succeeds in holding the reader's interest from beginning to end. Set among the keys of Florida's southern gulfcoast, this is a tale of horrendous criminality made that much more objectionable because of the idyllic locale in which it takes place.John D. MacDonald fans who have enjoyed Travis McGee will definitely want to meet Sam Brice. The two are literary clones who happen to live on opposite sides of the Florida peninsula.Where is Janet Gantry? is a 4 star effort. Recommended to readers who appreciate artful writing, like their crime hardboiled and don't object to some romance along the way.

Review: John D wrote the best characters. Honestly that's what pulls me along in his books. He makes you care about characters, so you want to see what happens to them. Like some of his other books, this one seems to get lost in characterization, but that's what I like about it.

Title: Well-told tale
Review: If you like Florida-based mysteries or a Travis McGee fan, you light this lightweight but well-written yarn by one of the best 20th Century American authors.

Title: Don't take my word for it.
Review: I've been a constant fan of John D's writing since I became an adult in the late '60s. Somehow, this one slipped past me for 50 years or so. But don't listen to me. Listen to Vonnegut and King, who have praised the quality of MacDonald's storytelling. Then pick up any one of his more than 75 novels. You'll get the bug, too. Why only 4 stars? Modern publishers apparently do not hire proofreaders. John D. likely would be appalled.
