Everything you need to know to put your drawings and paintings into perspective!
If the concept of perspective makes you think of confusing angles, fancy measuring gadgets and complicated theories, get ready for a very pleasant surprise. In this comprehensive guide, Phil Metzger demystifies perspective, presenting it simply as a matter of mimicking the way we see--like the way a distant mountain appears blue, or a road seems to narrow in the distance.
The Art of Perspective offers simple but powerful techniques for achieving a convincing illusion of depth and distance, whether it's a few inches in a still life or miles in a landscape.
• Start simple, with atmospheric perspective and intuitive techniques, and gradually progress to linear perspective and more complex challenges such as stairways, curves and reflections.
• Use the engaging, step-by-step demonstrations and exercises to try out each essential concept for yourself, making lessons clearer and more memorable.
• Learn theories that apply to all mediums, with specific advice for achieving effects using acrylic, oil, watercolor and pencil.
• Get the inside scoop on professional tricks and shortcuts that make perspective easier than ever!
Forget everything you think you know (or don't know) about perspective. This book builds an easy-to-follow, ground-up understanding of how to turn a flat painting or drawing surface into a living, breathing, dimensional scene that lures viewers in. No matter how you look at it, it's the ultimate guide to perspective for artists of every medium and skill level.

Title: So much more than I expected...
Review: To the person who complained that the author says the horizon line is always eye level, you obviously didn't read the book! I was expecting a book that dealt with vantage points and radiating lines. I am beginning Chapter 3, and we've not even touched on this yet. This book deals with other issues in perspective that I was not previously conscious of. At first, I thought the book was too advanced for me. While it is deep, it's written in a way that has opened my artistic eye. I can't recommend this book enough. I'm frequently disappointed in art instruction books, but this is one of my best Amazon purchases ever.

Title: Best Perspective Book Out there for Beginner - Intermediate
Review: I've boughtPerspective Drawing Handbook (Dover Art Instruction)Perspective (Artist's Library series #13)First Lessons in Drawing and PaintingI found this book (Art of Perspective) is the most comprehensive and the easiest to understand. There isn't AS much discussions of the typical planes of perspective (lines converging, floating boxes, etc). However, I've found youtube tutorials much easier to follow on these topics.

Title: great book
Review: I took up painting a few month ago... as a child growing up it was always my dream to be able to draw and paint.. I'm 33 now, and just finished my masters degree. My Masters, which required a lot of reading really opened up my mind and gave me the confidence in feeling that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. In fact, I have set out to tackle all my life's dreams which I thought were impossible before. I bought so far, something like 10 books on drawing, sketching, painting, etc... After trying to draw and paint a beautiful urban scene from Denmark, I realized it was much harder than expected... I set out to buy a book on perspective lines... This book as served me well... it carries with it several different examples... if you study the book well, you will be able to draw a rather small town...with a curvy road, that is hilly... which is what I was looking for... The author gives you a great deal of knowledge in understanding how scenes are constructed... In the world however there are endless examples, and clearly he couldn't cover everything... I would have liked to see examples with cars, peoples, and boats... that is why I only gave it 4 stars... but if you want to know how to place buildings and roads... this is the book for you. Either way, you will learn a lot.

Title: A cross between beginner and intermediate book on perspective
Review: It was not exactly what I thought it was going to be, albeit the text and illustrations do a reasonably fair representation. I believe it is a good beginner book as well as an intermediate level, especially for someone who knows very little about perspective. There are many facets of perspective the author does not address while addressesing eleven particular problems relative to drawing. He has introduced a painterly element with perspective which I found to be nice but not particularly important to me. Painters of acrylic, oil, watercolor and colored pencil will find helpful I think. This book will not fulfill my need and want but it is clearly one of the better books on perspective. Although I have given this book five stars I do not believe it answer all the questions or elements of perspective. It is a paperback and slick paper. I have to caution on recommending the book. I would add pictures but it would take far to many and would lead into something of a beast.

Title: Mother in law loves this!
Review: I got it as a Motherâs Day gift for my mother in law, who lives in a senior living center. Sheâs a talented painter, but struggles with perspective. She liked the book so well she started loaning it out to the other seniors who paint and some of them liked it so well they bought their own copy!!! Thank you for making a book so easy to understand!!

Review: So pleased with the purchase. The information is so clearly set out with specific instructions on how the role of perspective in art can be understood and used correctly. I paint in acrylics but the instructions are useful for any kind of medium just as the title states.

Review: Magic! This book is THE best book on perspective for artists - it covers ALL types of perspective: atmospheric, colour theory, linear etc. It explains everything so well that at the end you feel like an expert. Linear perspective is taught so well that by the end you will understand the dreaded 3 point perspective which is brought down to earth. It's all very simple. Art courses teach this subject badly or cannot explain it fully. This book solves that problem. Once you have this book you will have all the creative solutions you need. This is the 1 book you need; you won't need any others. The author is also an excellent teacher, artist and writer. The book is filled with beautiful examples of his art throughout. LOVE IT! THANK YOU!

Review: Of all the art books i have this is one of the most useful. It is broken into 3 parts: Natural Perspective, Linear Perspective (1,2 and 3 point), and Special Problems in Perspective. The book is rich in examples, explanations, opportunities for sketching and opportunities for painting. There a numerous âTry Thisâ sections to encourage you to experiment with concepts and a number of full step-by-step tutorials. The explanations in this book are easy to read and concise. I like that Metzger builds on concepts previously taught and provides reminders of what is important. By practicing the strategies and techniques taught in this book your work will bear the hallmarks of realism even in loose painting. The artwork is superb - the photographs are sharp and well-printed. The reading size of the fonts is easy and spacing is comfortable. One of the features I love about this book is that there are lots of examples of various buildings (and objects) with many winter landscapes. I believe this is a book to which one will continually refer on various painting journeys. Enjoy!
