Title: Very nice once you bend the holding clamp!
Review: This is a very nice cooking thermometer, but the holding clamp is not angled correctly for a Lodge® cast iron skillet with high sides. As it comes from the factory, the clamp works, but it doesn't hold the thermometer tightly, and the angle is wrong for my preferences.I studied the clamp and thermometer for a while and after quite a bit of metal bending and experimenting, I found the correct way to bend the holding clamp so the thermometer is vertical and, perhaps most importantly, is very steady so it doesn't go sideways or shift when I am frying chicken or fish.Overall, including experimenting time to get the angles correct, it took about 30 minutes to get the holding clamp the way I like it.I think this is the best that can be done with this holding clamp, and I suppose there is a way to design and build a holding clamp or metal piece that will be all the more rigid, but that might be too much work. The practical aspect is that the holding clamp is working nicely now to keep the thermometer vertical and stable so using it with hot peanut oil at 350-degrees Fahrenheit is safe and does not require constant fidgeting with the thermometer.I like this thermometer, and it probably will last longer than the "candy thermometers" with glass tubes and mercury or red alcohol, which soon stop working due to bubbles so that instead of being a steady column that stops at the current temperature, it's a bunch of bubbles and there is no way to read it or to return it to factory condition. For reference, I am a Vine Voice but I paid for this thermometer myself and nothing was free.

Title: Works great if you bother to read directions and calibrate
Review: I ordered this item a while back and LOVED it. Have just re-ordered today because I messed mine up by slamming my overcrowded kitchen gadget drawer closed and bending it! MY error. I bent the probe into a curved shape and bent it at the point where the probe connects to the thermometer. I just have to shake my head and roll my eyes at some of the reviews. Most of the negative reviews appear to be about the accuracy. Well, all you have to do is calibrate it. Simple process of boiling some water and taking a little bit of time and a set of pliers, a hemostat or a small wrench and turning the nut on the back until the needle points to 212 degrees. DUH. You most likely would need to do this with any kitchen thermometer. And it should be done periodically anyway. Don't be misled by stupid people!! This is an inexpensive and accurate thermometer IF you calibrate. The reason for my 4 stars on the easy to read and easy to use categories: The stem of the thermometer will turn within the clip, but sometimes it's a bit difficult to get the face of the dial turned in a direction that it's super easy to see. Very hard to describe, sorry. And the clip is set at a width which is difficult to make any SMALLER. It will expand to clip nicely to a thicker sided pot, but if you happen to try to use a thinner sided pot, there's no way to decrease the width of the clip. Again, kind of difficult to describe. I use cast iron cookware for my infrequent frying. The width of the clip tends to fit fairly snugly to most of my cast iron cookware, so no real big deal there for me, but it may present an issue to some who may be using a thinner sided vessel for frying. Overall, this is a great, inexpensive thermometer if you take the necessary step of calibrating.

Title: Kudoâs for quick customer support â¦
Review: First time I used it, clipped it to side of pan & turned on burner - saw temp start to rise and then heard a 'crack!' - temp dropped and stayed at lowest reading. No longer registers any change in temp. Had to guess when temp was right. I have contacted Escali through their website (since that's the only option for a refund or replacement), and I'll update this review when I hear from them.Update1- Escali promptly promised to send a replacement. Will update when Iâve received/used it.Update2 - replacement arrived quickly and this one appears to work well. Much appreciated.

Title: Easy Recalibration! Held up to an overheat
Review: I use this thermometer to deep fry and to use as a smoker thermometer probing through the silicone grommet in the drum. I have compared temps using my Thermopen One.What prompted this praiseworthy review is I had recently had my smoker temp get out of control and it was hot enough to melt the silicone grommet with the thermometer in place. When it had cooled I thought it was beyond recalibrating since at room temp it was registering 150°F. I decided to place the probe into boiling water and calibrate the needle to 100°C - 212°F by holding nut with pliers and rotating dial until lined up while still probing the boiling water. I was concerned that the thermometer might not read the temps accurately other than at a boil. I turned off heat and checked the water temp at 175, 150, and 125°F and compared it to my Thermopen. At 125° the Thermopen showed 120°.Unless I am making candy, 5° off isnât the going to do any harm.

Title: YOU CAN CALIBRATE IT--AND DO IT ASAP!
Review: I tested this temperature probe as soon as I got it. It said the water I was testing was boiling at 250°F, so I twisted the nut under the dial with a pair of pliers until the dial read 212°, since I'm not much above sea level. Simple, although if you live far above sea level, you should adjust your probe accordingly.I chose this particular temperature probe for the specific reason that it's adjustable. Every electronic temperature probe I've ever had--and I've bought several--eventually turns inaccurate. There's no way to correct them, and I'm tired of buying one after another. I can test this probe whenever I want and adjust it so that's it's as good as new, so I recommend this manual probe over any electronic one. Also, no battery to worry about.

Review: I bought it to be notified when water is about to boil on the stove and I'm not around. It works perfectly. Just need to set the temperature properly. In my case it's 95C (1000 meters above sea level). It might be a little bit more expensive that I would hoped for ($25), but I also saw it for $50 in other places. Found no good alternatives.Another thing I was concerned about was whether it would keep custom temperature settings. It does. So, whenever I need it I just press power button and put it into a pot. That's it.Like I said in the title, it could be louder. I can hear it from a neighbor room, but not everywhere in the house. Granted this and price, I have it 4 starts instead of 5. Change one factor and it would be 5.
