Daniil Trifonov returns with an album dedicated to J.S. Bach. He explores the scientific, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of Bach's cosmos, his faith, family, and world. Centered around Bach's mystical masterpiece, The Art of the Fugue, Trifonov's project investigates the man behind the myth - a genius of humility and humor, whose loves, losses, and devotion inspired what Trifonov calls "some of humanity's most emotionally rich and fascinatingly sophisticated expressions in music."

Title: Giants also come young
Review: This artist has total command, and may have just been born that way. One can admire his technical ability, or his interpretation, or his reverence for the composer. Or just admire his unique brain.

Title: Complete Art of Fugue with last fugue completed by Trifonov.
Review: Superb playing by Trifonov. I'm studying the 1st fugue, to have the album is useful to appreciate the whole work, and I like DG Cds. Stunning to have last fugue completed by Trifonov!

Title: A good, not âgreatâ Art of Fugueâ
Review: One of the most profound listening experiences one can have is Art of Fugue.Overall a good interpretation however some excessive sotto-voce contrapuncti, and the âFrench Overtureâ contrapunctus is excessively ponderous and imbalanced. For the piano version which brings this masterwork best to life is the extraordinarily crisp and nimble version by Pierre Laurent Aimard, also on DG.

Title: A very personal interpretation.
Review: This outstanding young pianist gives us a unique and stirring interpretation. He manages to use the piano to bring out every voice in a way Iâve never heard before. A wonderful addition to my collection of many piano and harpsichord interpretations of this amazing Bach composition.

Title: Beautiful music played brilliantly
Review: So interesting to hear keyboard music composed by J S Bach as well as that of three of his sons. Each son having a distinctive style all his own. Wonderful!!!

Review: This recording is very much a study in contrasts. The playing which is always of the highest caliber ranges from the simply lyrical to the most athletic and virtuosic. The latter never clinical or detached, but full blooded and passionate.Disc one starts with the music of Bachâs sons. The opening Sonata #5 is full bodied virtuosic playing with the Presto a little too fast for my taste. It zips by so quickly I find it hard to engage with. The Polonaise is lyrical and utterly beautiful. The Rondo clips along in a witty manner and is utterly delightful. The theme and 18 variations that follow are highly inventive and delightfully played, but the theme (âTwinkle, twinkle little starâ, as we know it in North America) is nothing short of trite. It is not a set that I would care to listen to very often, as novelty does wear very thin. The selections from the Anna Magdalena Notebook are elegantly played. With the Brahms transcription of the mighty Chaconne, the 2 CD set ushers in music that couldnât be more different than the first 16 selections. Nothing could compare with the original violin version of the Chaconne and in his own manner Brahms makes no attempt to compete. This is intended as a study for the left hand and it is a marvellous transcription in its own right, that is equal to its outstanding performance here. With the exception of the last track the remainder is devoted to the unfinished masterpiece âArt of Fugueâ. It is a work that is difficult to play in every sense, including the fact it consists of 20 contrapuntal movements based on a single unifying subject, all in the same key. Trifonov rises to the challenge and presents a dizzying display of contrast and temperament. Many pianists play Bach as if theyâre imitating a harpsichord, but Trifonov makes no bones about what instrument he is playing and uses its incredible sonorous range to the benefit of Bach, not to his detriment, including Trifonovâs own realization of the unfinished Contrapunctus 14.Personally I wish the disc had ended with the sublime Contrapunctus 14, but it ends with the Hess transcription of âJesu Joyâ, one of my least favourite of familiar Bach arrangements. To boot, Trifonov plays it too slow for my liking. The liner notes are worth mentioning as well. While they do offer some meaningful illumination, they are filled with myriads of unsubstantiated speculation on the connection between the fugues and spirituality that becomes nothing short of cloying. For example, proposing that the first 7 fugues recall the 7 days of Creation or that the first 12 fugues are portraits of the 12 Apostles. Really?Despite my critique of some of the lighter offerings and the cringe-worthy liner notes, this a brilliant recording by an artist who effortlessly never ceases to astonish.
