Title: Excellent read

Title: Dependable as ever….
Review: Not the best of the series, but as always, an enjoyable story. I found the humor to be cranked up a little more, the sense of danger slightly less. Some revelations on past events and a bit of a cliff hanger moment at the end has me looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review: This fifth installment in the Slow Horse/Slough House spy novel series provides the same thrills and sarcastic humor I’ve come to expect from Mick Herron. The story starts with a terrorist attack on villagers in Derbyshire. A jeep bearing all black-clad men with machine guns comes careening through a small village. The men open fire, gunning down innocent people going about their daily business, men, women, and children. Outrage resonates throughout England, sending shock waves through the intelligence community.Claude Whelen, the current head of Regent’s Park (MI5), is in trouble. Not only did his agents fail to anticipate the attack, but he is also caught in a compromising situation when a current Member of Parliament antagonistic to Regent’s Park is killed, and he is the last known person to see the man alive. Whelen’s precarious position is not improved by Diana Taverner, second in command at Regent’s Park, angling to usurp him.The slow horses come into the picture when it becomes known that Rodney Ho, the resident technogeek and aspiring Lothario, leaks intelligence information to a girl pretending to be his girlfriend. In charge of the slow horses, Jackson Lamb must put his team on the front line to stop the terrorists, salvage Rodney, and stay one step ahead of the A-team spymasters at Regent’s Park. Of course, as the agents track the terrorists, nothing is what it seems.Herron displays his usual in-depth knowledge of spycraft and politics, cheekily written scenes of the misfit spooks, and masterful descriptions of slow horse headquarters in Dickensian style. I alternate between savoring each well-crafted line, laughing out loud, and racing through the pages in suspense. Like the other books in the series, this one may be read as a standalone, but it is so much more enjoyable when you know the characters’ backstories that have been built carefully from the first one. If you like your mysteries and spy novels well-written, darkly humorous, and thrilling, you’ll love this one.

Review: Another brilliant addition to Mick Herron's brilliant espionage series based on a group of misfit spies (the 'Slow Horses') exiled to Slough House, where the dregs of the British secret service are sent to serve out their days with mind-numbingly dull tasks. Ruling over them all is Jackson Lamb, an odious man who drinks and smokes too much and whose sense of personal hygiene and lack of sensitive dialog makes him reviled by all. But he is not incompetent at his craft and is wily enough to know what secrets are being hidden by those in charge of the service, including those of the current head, Claude Whelan and the one who wields the real power behind him, Di Taverner.All the favourites are back in this fifth novel, although still reeling from the events played out at the end of the previous one. They all have issues which have all helped to land them at Slough House, problems with drugs or alcohol, anger management, difficulty with interpersonal relationships, or ability to follow orders. River Cartwright is the least damaged of the Slow Horses, but even he finds himself in trouble when sent to protect a politician.The action kicks off with two inexplicable events. A terrorist attack on a small, quiet village in Derbyshire and a failed attempt on the life of Roddy Ho, the Slough House IT specialist. Roddy (self-named "The Rodster") sees himself as God's gift to women. After all, he has a girlfriend called Kim (who is always asking him to do favours, like wiping debt off her credit cards, but always has an excuse for not staying the night with him).As always, Herron's dialogues are sharp with dark, incisive humour as the Slow Horses encounter a terrorist group almost as inept as themselves and find themselves unofficially operational again. Hugely entertaining and enjoyable, I can only hope their will be many more books to come in this series.

Title: Each book seems better
Review: Each book in the Slough House series seems like the best one when I finish it. And each time I read another, I am so happy to discover that this one, too, is better than the last. But since it seems that way every time, it must just be that each one is fully realized: totally new plot twists, characters so well drawn they feel like familiars, and the wit! Oh, the wit. Sigh. The most satisfying moments, sprinkled thoroughly throughout, leavening the dark and heavy subject matter of mere humans, trying to protect a Western democracy in a world rife with terrorist s from every autocratic nation.Fun times!!!

Title: still fun, but not as good as the earlier ones.
Review: Some of the dialogue and Lamb behavior is getting a bit overwrought, as are the literary devices (dawn doing X, night doing Y). That said, still a compelling page turner with characters I like and fun plot twists along the way. Well worth the read.

Title: Another Exceptional Read
Review: There is no doubt in my mind that Mick Herron’s ability to write prose is superb. All one has to do is read the very last chapter of this book where he describes the dusk entering Slough House. It’s like he wrote this wonderful story then in the last chapter he crowns it with a description of the dusk. I didn’t want this story to end but Mick Herrons prose in the last chapter was so descriptive, thoughtful and beautiful that I was able to come to terms that the story had ended. Looking forward to his next book!

Review: 4 1/2 -5 stars. This is the fifth book in Herron’s excellent Slough House series and it was a terrific read. The Slow Horses are continuing to do busy work that goes nowhere. A group of terrorists commit an atrocity in a small village and soon there are more eventful happenings. Someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho and no one can figure out why. The Horses get involved in both situations and as is normal, Jackson Lamb is more aware of things than anyone else, despite his boorish manners. And someone plans to shut Slough House down for good. Many stories and situations become resolved in this terrific thriller.

Review: The Slough House universe has something borrowed from a Latin American magic reality myth, perhaps Macondo. The characters are so good they have reached this status.In ‘London Rules’ once again, Jackson Lamb and his freaks deploy their doubtful skills to solve something, always with exquisite attention that the status of the Circus is not to be disturbed.Politics, social satir and slices from the slow horses’ troubled lifes are blended into a good narrative that only loses its pace around the final third of the novel, where the writer seems to have lost momentum and does not know how to bring in the dénouement. Well done and looking for the next one!
