The inspiration for the major motion picture starring Russell Crowe.
The war of 1812 continues, and Jack Aubrey sets course for Cape Horn on a mission after his own heart: intercepting a powerful American frigate outward bound to play havoc with the British whaling trade. Stephen Maturin has fish of his own to fry in the world of secret intelligence. Disaster in various guises awaits them in the Great South Sea and in the far reaches of the Pacific: typhoons, castaways, shipwrecks, murder, and criminal insanity.

Title: Don't Leave Port Without This One!
Review: My local libraries provided bits and pieces of O'Brien's 20 novel series. I had begun this adventure with Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin and was determined to read it from port to prophesy... but when I got to #10, it could not be found. I had to order it and its delivery via mail dragged on and on... and while Aubrey doesn't fair as well in port as he does during a commission, I skipped over this novel while completing the 20 novel series--HA HA HA, thinking that the movie that had been made would adequately refresh my memory about what happened in The Far Side of the World. But, NO, take my word for it, that's a missed buoy, a drenched ankle, a broken oar. This story is worth the wait, fits perfectly between #9 and #11 and if you're loving all the cannon fire, sail adjustments, night-sky goggling, tiffs and spats between the crew members up til now, read it. (Honestly? I think it doesn't live at my local libraries anymore because it's been swiped by readers so hooked on the story he/she stole it.)

Title: Capt. Aubrey and Dr. Maturin are a fun duo.
Review: I love them both! I also bought one of the lexicons about this series and i felt great understanding even more about the naval text that flew by me the first time i read the 20-book series. A great ride!

Title: Good Reading/ Movie?
Review: Much of the movie "master and commander" you'll find from this book. As are the others, in this series of 21, a very well written book, interesting storyline, and melds well with the others. Too bad "21" wasn't more complete!
