What if the remarkable story of Ebenezer Scrooge was true? What if the account was relayed to Dickens and he turned it into A Christmas Carol? What if the Ghostly visitations did not begin with, nor end with, Scrooge, but the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come visit one misanthropic soul in need of reclamation every Christmas Eve? This modern-day sequel to the Charles Dickens classic assumes all of the above. And this time, the spiritual trio’s attentions have been directed to a not-so-nice woman in Philadelphia.

Ellie Printh is a 53-year-old heart transplant survivor and wealthy business owner who loves no one and has no intention of changing that. On the anniversary of the life-saving operation performed seven Christmas Eves prior, the spirit of her equally irascible heart donor warns her she will be visited by three ghosts, looking to reform her character and give her a fresh start.

But will this supernatural encounter change Ellie for good or are some people simply too stuck in their ways?

John Derr’s Dickens-inspired novel is a Christmas story that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Exploring some big themes including childhood trauma and abuse, Another Christmas Carol’s message will stay with readers long after they finish the final page.

Title: An excellent story by a gifted storyteller
Review: I never read Dicken's classic novel. I saw the movie on tv at a fairly young age and came away feeling there was too much darkness and not enough hope for me to be interested in reading the book. But this updated "modern sequel" doesn't suffer from such imbalance. The writing is so descriptive, I felt I was witnessing each scene right along with Ellie. The sadness was balanced with compassion & humor, insight & understanding. But most of all, I found the story to be relatable for me personally. The bittersweetness of childhood memories. The trauma and pain of abandonment, whether the result of uncontrollable tragedy or selfish carelessness. The unconscious decision to be so independent and self-sufficient as to not need others, never realizing at the time how quickly that path leads to isolation and loneliness. And finally, through perseverance & lessons learned or more likely by the grace of God, finding healing in the sharing of unconditional love with "the family we choose for ourselves". It's a thoughtful and well-told story written by a talented and gifted author.

Title: just outstanding!
Review: Well written, thoughtfully presented and much good humor for a terrific story. I loved it, and yes after finishing it, I bought it. Good story tellers should be supported. I’ll probably give some of the books as Christmas gifts! Thank you John C. Derr!

Title: A MUST read
Review: My favorite non-horror book of 2023 (and I’ve read over 100 this year). You may think this will be predictable and follow the story of Ebenezer Scrooge but you’d be wrong. Twists, a surprise at the end and a delightful fleshing out of characters and attention to details that I SO love in a book! Treat yourself - you’ll be so glad you did. A great read all year round.

Title: New updated version of A Christmas Carol
Review: I just finished this book . . .I was so intrigued that I had to keep reading. I loved your take on the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The book had similarities to the original A Christmas Carol but yet so updated and different, loved the local PA connections. Great job!

Title: Does Dickens proud with this continuation of the story
Review: The story stays true to Dickens theme of visitors on Christmas Eve to individuals who are in dire need of transformation and the age old theme of doing for others. Mr Derr wasn’t afraid to tackle some uncomfortable themes with abuse and foster home problems, yet in a manner suitable for all ages. You are left with the knowledge that we can all do better and do more for our fellow man. The story is beautifully narrated and articulated brilliantly to make scenes become vivid in your imagination. You can feel the wind when the ghosts appear and be blinded by their light. The anguish is palpable in our main character Ellie, as she fights to regain control in an “out of control” situation. Truly a beautiful story of the spirit of family and love, transformation and redemption. A must read for Dickens fans as Mr Derr does honor to the timed Christmas classic by bringing the story up to date, yet eerily similar to hardships endured by characters in the original classic.

Title: I love this story.
Review: This is a well written story based on the idea that the 3 Christmas spirits visit a different person every Christmas. This is NOT a cookie cutter retelling of A Christmas Carol. There are clever nods to Dickens’s story but you don’t really know what is going to happen next. There is a twist at the end that Dickens would be proud of.

Review: Only disappointment is that I can’t find any other books from this great author. So sad really! I can only hope he continues writing more books and preferably the same kind. I’d love to see which person is chosen each Christmas. I’ll definitely be rereading this book next Christmas.
