WHEN YOU'RE IN THE DEATH BUSINESS,
EACH DAWN COULD BE YOUR LAST.

Raw, straightforward, and powerful, Ed Kugler's account of his two years as a Marine scout-sniper in Vietnam vividly captures his experiences there--the good, the bad, and the ugly. After enlisting in the Marines at seventeen, then being wounded in Santo Domingo during the Dominican crisis, Kugler arrived in Vietnam in early 1966.

As a new sniper with the 4th Marines, Kugler picked up bush skills while attached to 3d Force Recon Company, and then joined the grunts. To take advantage of that experience, he formed the Rogues, a five-sniper team that hunted in the Co Bi-Than Tan Valley for VC and NVA. His descriptions of long, tense waits, sudden deadly action, and NVA countersniper ambushes are fascinating.

In DEAD CENTER, Kugler demonstrates the importance to a sniper of patience, marksmanship, bush skills, and guts--while underscoring exactly what a country demands of its youth when it sends them to war.

Title: The strait poop..
Review: Kugler writes his story likes guy telling you about his experience and not like one who is telling someone else’s story. Riveting and fascinating from the first word. A comprehensive story of where he was and what he did in his words. Very well written and a pleasure to read. I would buy and read other books written by him.

Title: Vietnam at it's worse
Review: This was a good book although at times I wondered if this guy was a sociopath as he exhibited a likeness for killing just for killing's sake. Overall it was a very good view of life in Vietnam through a Marine's eyes. I had a very good friend that was over there at about this same time period and was also a Marine who told me some stories similar to these although not to the extreme that this story was. I was in the Air Force during this period also but never had the "pleasure" of going to Vietnam as Okinawa was as close as I got.

Title: Best book I have read about combat in Vietnam
Review: This book is real gem. A must read that captures a sniper’s incredible combat journey through a war that should never have been fought. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!!!

Title: Great Read, Excellent observations
Review: A great book written by a soldier that can tell a good story. It has wonderful expressions and observations throughout. It makes very clear the failed strategies of the Vietnam war and how they are being repeated again. Maybe the idea of war with the US is not for the US to win, but rather for it to satisfy making money for companies that supply all the weapons, helios etc.Back to the sniper, yes, this is a no BS story. Well told. You get the idea the US soldiers were more or less confined to Base while the bad guys ran the country. We all know of the failed strategies, but why didn't the generals seek better tactics? Well that was Vietnam, now it's the same in a different country.Enough, this is a great book. Well worth the read - and it is a good long read.Well worth the money.

Title: LOCK AND LOAD FOR AN EXCITING ONE
Review: Kug, you have written an excellent book about your time in Vietnam. Your words and emotions during the combat scenes would have brought cheers from Ernest Hemingway. Your descriptions of your comrades, both the crazies and the almost crazies, were right on. Those you bonded to, so did your readers. You made the reader understand that bond and what it feels like to lose your close comrades to the horrors you were all immersed in. I was particularly impressed by your ability to get across to your readers exactly what that nightmare was like – the swift adrenal swings from extreme fear to just the opposite of peace and tranquility assisted by a good night’s drunk with your buddies. Then back into the nightmare again, tempered always by the extreme shocking relief of once more coming out of it alive. And understandably the possible easy addiction that awaits those who begin to long for those incredible alternating extreme highs and extreme lows, the ultimate thrills, causing so much rear end puckering and un-puckering. You did that so much I know it must have been a relief to return to the world where it no longer was necessary and for the first time your relaxed rear end smile went from cheek to cheek. After awhile I plan to re-read Dead Center more slowly to savor once again those highs and lows without my own puckering. Thanks, Kug, for such a good read.Robert F. Burgess

Title: I Got Bored Reading This Book
Review: Empty story with little insight. No continuation for post deployment issues with PTSD or conflict with any moral injury. That service had to cost something.

Title: Despite the language, an excellent description of combat as many were exposed to in Vietnam.
Review: People wonder whey many came home with problems with drugs, alcohol, PTSD and other ailments. The author told it just the way he experienced it. Never heard or read anything like it from the media that were there sending out their stories. Never heard any politicians (DC types) mentioning it either. Our young men and women are being exposed to things they could never have imagined prior to their entry into the service. Yes, it's nice to say "Thank You for your service" when you meet them. But they deserve so much more. I liked the way he brought us up to date on the members of the unit at the end. Just goes to show you that the great majority of our returning service members do turn out to be just fine. I recommend this to all who really have no idea of what combat is really like. You can get by the language and concentrate on the description of the events. It's a real eye opener.

Review: The Vietnam conflict has spawned a host of memories, everything from the formal history of the entire struggle to that wide range of difficult experiences of the ordinary infantryman, pilot, medic or advisor to the Vietnamese people. Ed Kugler's own account as a Marine Sniper adds much of value to this library. As with other personal accounts this is especially noted for its honest and straightforward treatment of what could only have been a difficult business. It is heart-warming to be able to read that once he put this behind him he found a way to move forward and live a normal life, to this, much credit is offered to his wife. A very well worth while read for anyone interested in this time.
