The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship: poised English beauty Fliss, whose facade of perfect wife and mother covers gaping inner wounds; policeman’s daughter Nora, who finds herself entangled with a shadowy gangster; frustrated baseball star Beatrice, whose career has come to an end along with the women’s baseball league of WWII; and poisonous, gung-ho Arlene, who has thrown herself into McCarthy’s Red Scare.

Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?

Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

Includes a bonus conversation with Kate Quinn, Saskia Maarleveld, and Tessa Woodward, editor of The Briar Club.

Title: Quinn does it again!
Review: Not Quinn's typical thriller novel, but just as thrilling. Well written, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable, she develops a family of unlikely characters, to include an old house. I was sorry to finish this one!

Title: Couldn’t put it down!!
Review: I loved this book and would give it 10 stars if I could. I loved the strong female characters who came together to support and love each other in spite of their differences. The characters were real, flawed, and believable. The writing style was a refreshing change and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is the best book I have read in a while. I will have a book hangover for days.

Title: Yawn
Review: I’ve read three other books by this author. I expected this to be about the Mc Carthy era but I really don’t think that aspect was well developed at all. Bits and pieces of each character were interesting but they didn’t grip me or shall I say, the story development just wasn’t ever important to me. No punch. Disappointing

Review: Great book loved the characters really well written as all of her novels are. Parts made me laugh when the thoughts of the 'House' were voiced - would love to have a room there! - . I noticed another review said it was completely different to previous books and had nothing in common I didn't find that as this novel contains lots of strong women moving through life helping and some hindering other women and I have found that thread in the authors other novels including the co written ones. So do read this novel and enjoy I think its one of those books that I will read again.

Review: Story relates to rundown boarding house run by a cranky lady, Doilies, who expects her female tenants to abide by her set of archaic rules. She has 2 children, Pete and Lina. Pete is always on the ready to help any of the tenants. Kate Quinn has described each of these ladies so aptly each one different with their own set of quirks and personalities. As they live in the McCarthy era, each has their own political views. The ending was completely unexpected. All in all, a must read.
