Title: What a beautiful down to earth collection of recipes and family inspiration!
Review: Gave this book to my husband for his birthday. He loves it. I felt it reflected on how he was raised by his parents who are also from Hawaii. His mother journeyed on and Dad is now 96 years young and most of these recipes are what they were raised on and the photos look like what was served at many family meals. This book truly touches on importance of tradition and family, the photographs are just beautiful. This is a book is not compiled of a slew of recipes and a bunch of pictures, it’s well thought out. Alana, this is a wonderful book; reflects such a beautiful way of cooking as well as life. Thank you.

Title: Definitely, Authentically, Exuberantly Hawai'ian
Review: I bought this book because another reviewer said he saw that Spam was an ingredient in various recipes and no serious cookbook could include Spam as an ingredient (so he sent it back)! If you know anything about local Hawai'ian food, it's that Spam is an integral ingredient in some favorites. I knew this cookbook had to be authentic and it definitely is. All the great local Hawaiian dishes are here. A lot of them take some time to cook: we as a family don't mind this as we get to spend quality kitchen time together and enjoy the results - but it can be some work. Some of our favorites: Loco Moco, Ginger Misoyaki Butterfish, Shoyu Chicken, Saimin (yes, we actually do make the noodles from scratch). If you want a taste of the real Hawai'i you will find it here. Besides the recipes, there are excellent discussions of the Hawaiian pantry (including spam), a little bit of history, and a short dissection of the plate lunch. Notes: On the mainland if you are looking for Alaea Sea Salt and you happen to live near a Cost Plus World Market, they usually carry the very authentic "Old Time Brand" Alaea Sea Salt and charge much less than you can get it for online. Also, if you like Red Boat fish sauce, try BLiS brand (albeit not cheap): they start with Red Boat and take it up several notches. A great and thorough book.

Title: local food, and plate lunch from a mesh of cultures, what isn't there to like
Review: This book is awesome, it reminds me of like those old hawaiian buddhist church cookbooks that everyone in the neighborhood contributed that one favorite recipe to sell as a fundraiser. In this book though has almost all the favorites i grew up withand i mean "all". It covers everything from true hawaiian, then i think mostly the japanese cultural foods, with a few chinese/portugese/korean/filipino recipes that make the typical plate lunch is here in this one book. I love that it has things like POG, pineapple, orange, guava juice that kids drank and would collect the POG caps to play a game with, and snacks like cone sushi, hurricane popcorn, boiled peanuts, manapua . Desserts they have malasadas, shave ice, haupia, things people relate to the islands. Love how they explain the ingredients like we use best foods mayo lol, and plate topology. Typically a plate will have carbs galore, large amounts of rice, mac salad, with main dish of some sort of protein, teri chicken, etc, and vegies like chinese chicken salad. That's typical, but a lot of times plates are overflowing with the sides, kim chee, poke, lumpia, poi, lomi salmon, but it's all here. These are the recipes great for potlucks and just enjoying with family and friends. If you want to be a hit at the next party, look no further.

Title: Nearly as great as a trip to Hawai'i
Review: This was on my wish list for a while and all of the incredible reviews prove to be true. I'm not usually one for blogger cookbooks, but this one is different. I wasn't familiar with the blog before, but I appreciate the niche topic / geographical theme. The book itself is stunning and the attention to detail is really special. The author even states in the book that she chose the paper it's printed on specifically to gain character through use and owners notes. That is something I love. The photos are gorgeous and it definitely gives me flashbacks to my own Hawaiian travels. It shows that Alana has opened her family recipe arsenal and exudes the Aloha culture and beauty.I appreciate how user friendly this cookbook is, too, without being condescending or filled with basic filler recipes. The cultural amalgamation and historical time lines of Hawaii also set this one apart.I'm anxious to get cooking and baking, which will have to suffice as I dream of my next trip to the islands. In the meantime I'll be making mainland plate lunches, that guava cake, and all things passion fruit.

Title: Basic Ono Hawaiian food
Review: Love the cookbook - old-style as far as images go, not splashy, but the book itself full of great, Island-style recipes and heart-warming stories - a little sad there was no malasada recipe from Leonard's but that was the only thing missing from this little gem of a cookbook. I love it.

Title: butter mochi every day please!
Review: This book sent me on a culinary vacation, so much that I’m pretty sure I can still smell the faint aroma of sunscreen in the spine of my book. The kind of vacation where you dodge all the tourist traps and b-line straight to the local food stall run by the sweetest aunty who insists you haven’t eaten enough and you end up spending the day enjoying everything on the menu as she tells you intimate stories about each dish and the local culture. The book is prefaced with a brief guide on specialty ingredients, knife and other prep techniques, and a quick background on hawaiian culture and ethnography — which is a service to a culture (and cuisine) that has been commodified in so many wrong ways. Each recipe even has a symbol at the top of the page to signify which ethnic group(s) inspired the dish, so you really start to understand the cultural overlap.History lesson aside, the recipes are approachable and delicious (I’m getting hungry just thinking about that butter mochi), and will inspire many a summer picnics, bbq’s, and backyard dinner parties. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!

Title: Wedding gift
Review: My Nephew got married in Hawaii. I gave this beautiful book as a gift with a book stand for displaying on their counter. Before gifting it I wrote down a few recipes from it and will make them when they come for dinner.
