Barcelona, as defined by writer Eduardo Mendoza, is "The city of wonders." And there's no better way to explore this dynamic city than venturing beyond its most famous attractions. Do so by walking along the 14 itineraries in this comprehensive guide. Each will take you, step by step, through the lively neighborhoods in all their variety and diversity. Find "Flash Visits" throughout--itinerary suggestions to tackle visiting the whole city in a single day or weekend. Follow tours through the colorful metropolis--characterized by modern monuments, narrow medieval alleys, vibrant markets, and Ramblas--to places such as to the Picasso Museum, the Sagrada Familia, and Barceloneta, the busy maritime district. This beautifully illustrated guide also offers excursions to less-visited spots, including Montjuic hill, the Botanical Garden (Jardi Botanic) and the Collserola Tower (Mirador de la Torre de Collserola). Plus, you'll find expert recommendations throughout to explore distinctive aspects of the city's culture--art and culinary traditions, as well as sports, with the Futbol Club Barcelona, the Catalan team. Whatever path you choose, this guide will provide everything you need to know--including where to eat and stay--for the ultimate vacation in Barcelona.

Title: The Best of the City Compact book provides introduction to unfamiliar city
Review: A friend of mine mentioned that he planned a trip to Barcelona in the near future, so when I saw this book, I thought I'd try to learn a bit about the city and give him some tips on what sites to see. The book does an ample job of describing the high points of Barcelona, and providing lovely photos of them, but that's just about all it does. The book is primarily organized by neighborhood, with a small section in the back that gives some common phrases in Spanish and Catalan, along with some general tourist tips for Spain. While the pictures were beautiful, they seemed to take up a lot of space: every two-page spread had at least one-quarter of the space taken up by photos. And because the book is on the small side (~7’ x 5.5’), it needed to use a lot of whitespace to keep it readable. These two factors amplify one another’s effects. I counted the number of words on a typical two-page spread, and came up with 129 words on the left and 332 on the left. To give a point of comparison, this review is about 340 words. After reading the book, I felt that I had a good overview of what can be found in Barcelona, especially for a first-time tourist. While there isn't a lot of information on any particular attraction (at most, the biggest attractions got a few pages), it provided a basis for doing additional research on the things that sounded most interesting. I'll leave that to him, though. The form factor of the book lends itself to being tossed in the side pocket of a bag or within a woman's purse. The two flaps on the cover show useful maps (a high-level city map on the front, and the public transit system on the back). While they can be used as bookmarks, doing so means that the book no longer sits flat. This effect becomes more pronounced when marking a page near the middle of the book.

Title: So good bag snatcher stole it
Review: We really enjoyed this basic guide for our four days in Barcelona but on day 2 our bag was stolen with it in it.Luckily we’re wise to this problem (though not quite wise enough) so we didn’t have anything valuable or personal in our bag.But be careful in Barcelona - it’s safe and WONDERFUL but bag snatching is rampant.

Review: Recent trip to Barcelona (4d) with a lot of walking was helped by this book.Book is divided into sections eg. B for fun, B in a weekend, B for foodies as well as areas (Neighbourhood Walks) eg. La Rambla, On the waterfront, La Sagrada to Park Guell.Good descriptions, informative and easy to read especially to plan your trip. We used taxi's (inexpensive), buses (cheap) and walked (free). However maps not brilliant as they are divided up into small areas. Best used with a full fold out Barcelona map which is easily available when you get there. There is a small map of the whole of Barcelona in the front cover but it is pretty useless. You could of course download google maps of the areas you are interested in.
