Title: I think Josh Brolin is the only current male actor who is isn't affraid to be a Man's Man.
Review: I love this movie. I love Josh Brolin as an actor and male action star without being a "Male Action Star". He reeks of Machismo unlike many of the action 'studs' of '80s Hollywood. It never seems forced with him like so many '5 foot 7" stars who are always filmed with short co-stars and from cameras on the ground looking up. And I'm NOT knocking Arnold, Sly, or Tom because I dig all three of those kats but that is just the way film-makers decided to do things in the '70s & '80s. Not the actors fault. Fresh out of WWII & back to being a(n?) L.A. Cop in a Hollywood that has changed too drastically for Sgt.John O'Mara (Brolin) who starts kicking ass early on when he spies a punk of Mickey Cohen's (Sean Penn) lead a gullible, 'fresh-from-the-farm' blonde to his 'photo studio' where his friends are waiting to gang-rape her. Brolin follows the punk & his prey to building used as a brothel & 'training room' to break in the new girls - even though his new partner warns him he's to stay away from that joint because "it's Mickey Cohen's place". Brolin ignores the advice and goes in alone because the partner does a 'runner'. After O'Mara goes in and saves the girl who the punks locked up in the Murphy Bed when Brolin entered. After that the place becomes useless to Cohen. What he does then has to be seen as does his opening scene of the movie with Mickey up in the Hollywood(Land) Hills who sends a message to Chicago that this is Mickey's town by having a guy's arms tied to the bumper of one car & his legs tied to the bumper of another car. While the Wolves are howling a few hundred yrds away Mickey explains to the poor lug who is about to be ripped apart (like the Indians used to do to victims, only with horses), that these beasts of the night- they knew that whenever he (Mickey) came up here they were going to have a feast when he was finished. I won't give any more away other that Chief 'Whiskey' Bill Parker formed the "Gangster Squad" - who were real kats back in the late '40s & '50s with a mission of taking down Mickey Cohen and his ilk and getting Los Angeles back to the town it was pre-WWII. One of the last Male-centric cop/action flicks not that only females are allowed to play rough and men are resigned to be the new house husbands.

Title: Put a Lid on It!
Review: "The Gangster Squad" based on a TRUE story (the "Hat Squad"--see " Mullholland Falls" which also featured Nick Nolte, then as the leader of the group) taking place in post WWII Los Angeles when the Gangster/Racketeer Mickey Cohen climbed to the top of the heap in the early 50's. Corruption was not new to City Leaders, Policemen and Union men however to step outside the law to FIGHT it was.....enter Sgt John O'Mara (Josh Brolin)--former decorated war veteran, hardened by his years in the war and a no-nonsense ethic he applies to his detective position with the LAPD; Sgt Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling) content with getting along to insure a pension in 20 years, undergoing a slow realization that in order to enforce the law sometimes one must BREAK the law; Giovanni Ribisi (excellently cast) as the techno-geek officer who improvises listening devices to tap into Cohen's secret plans ; Michael Pena as a rookie cop eager to join up and be part of this team; and Robert Patrick the elder lawman who still holsters an old 6 shooter but with deadly accuracy (obviously not a fan of LAPD's snub .38 service weapon) We now have the ingredients of Superhero Crime Fighters without the necessity of Miranandizing suspects or calling for the paddy wagon to arrest lawbreakers! Just as violent and physically abusive as Cohen (darkly and visciously portrayed by Sean Penn) our ensemble of Cops fight ruthlessly to eradicate the grasp of Mickey Cohen and his henchmen in the most bold and intrusive means available. Add to the mix a young, sultry siren (Emma Stone) who, as Cohen's Moll-doll, secretly falls for the ever romantic rogue and member of O'Mara's Hat Squad, Jerry, and you have the classic Hollywood Love Triangle, acted with complete believability and vulnerability......Moral ambiguity, blazing tommyguns, knives, barefisted brawling are interspersed with a lively 40's soundtrack, lavish niteclubs, colorful suits, gowns and locales that capture the milieu of Los Angeles in the late 40's......an absolute visual spectacle from start to finish (and props to Nick Nolte as the legendary Bill Parker who sanctioned the formulation of the Gangster Squad) I found this endeavor to be sexy, violent and satisfying (appeasing the inner vigilante within ALL OF US)...
