Title: Who produces a Movie without sub-titles?
Review: I like international intrigue more than the average movie phile but with the lack of sub-titles for the Italian language, the story lacks clear continuity. Was it made primarily for the Italian market? It's a 32 year old movie but I just had to put that out as many other viewers have done. All filmed on locale, it' Italian scenery and filming is interesting and well done but come on. With sub-titles it would be a close to a 5 star but really....it's a one.

Title: Stream this instead!
Review: The movie itself is good, I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. Andrew McCarthy is woefully miscast, because he simply doesn't have the chops and screen presence to carry a film as intense as this story being told. When your lead actor is out-acted by Sharon Stone, that says a lot! Sharon Stone, in an early star-making type role gives it her best with some searing blue eyes and clenched teeth. She's not half bad, but her striking beauty if a bit distracting. Then again, the movie is set in Italy, so its not that unusual to see women that beautiful in the middle of the drama. The directing and camera work are pretty top notch; John Frankenheimer is a total veteran by this point and always had a nack for putting the camera in the perfect place and the kinetic motion of a good foot chase. Its an interesting competent movie, dragged down a bit by Andrew McCarthy, and thus gets lost in the shuffle of political thriller.HOWEVER. BUYER BEWARE! This DVD is 1 star because of the horrible aspect ration. Instead of pan-and-scan formatting, a huge chunk of the image is literally cropped off at all times, resulting in characters completely missing from scenes, or action that makes no sense. This DVD format is TERRIBLE!This may be the one time that my love of physical media was bested by streaming. Once I immediately noticed the egregiously wrong screen formatting of the DVD, we check on Amazon Prime, and yes it was streaming for free. And yes it was full screen, not formatted, not cropped. And yes it was very upscaled a bit for better resolution.So there you go. SKIP THE 1:66.1 DVD and stream the movie in glorious full screen.

Title: Much of Storyline is lost because the Italian Portions are Never Translated!
Review: I wondered as a fan of Andrew McCarthy, why I didn't remember this movie. After searching various postings of this film, I realized the filmmaker chose not to provide the viewers with the portions shown in Italian. Seriously! So, you, the viewer, have to watch conversations take place and try to figure out what is happening with no clues...I kept thinking at some point, we would get clues. Nope, you don't learn until the last 15 minutes what is happening and who is who. Frankly, I feel I wasted another 2 hours watching this 30 years later, because it was so unfulfilling the first time that I forgot it. Boo, on those in Hollywood who supported this storytelling delivery.Also, the female nudity was gratiutous (unnecessary).

Title: you can pass on this and not miss anything
Review: I marked this as "OK". However, while I wanted to like this movie for some reason I just couldn't. I just couldn't get into it. And the "good guy" is not a good guy. I think they missed something here.

Review: Having known and admired John Frankeimer and his films, this is a strangely flawed political thriller that is undermined by terrible casting and serious plot holes. Andrew McCarthy stars as David Raybourne, an American journalist who returns to Rome after a brief stay in New York City where he secured a deal to write a political thriller revolving around the Red Brigade, Italy's notorious terrorist group.Raybourne finds himself caught up in the reign of terror spread by the Red Brigade owing to his friendship with an Italian university professor, Italo Bianchi, who is secretly acting as an informer for the terrorists. American actor John Pankow is bizarrely cast as Bianchi and delivers a truly embarrassing performance in his clichéd attempt at pretending to be a native Roman. What was Frankenheimer thinking?The best scenes in the film involve McCarthy and the highly talented and sensually alluring Italian actress Valeria Golino who plays Leah, his lover, and the cousin of Bianchi. Golino is the best part of the movie and it is too bad the surrounding cast is so weak. Sharon Stone plays Alison King, a supposedly hard-core war photographer who happens to be walking past a bank which the Red Brigade is in the process of robbing. Her photos make the cover of Time Magazine which brings her to the attention of Raybourne.This is where the story turns somewhat ridiculous as Stone parades around in flowing blonde locks that would embarrass even the most uncultivated American tourist, much less a serious war photographer. Her performance is quite solid, however, although she and McCarthy engage in one of the most ridiculous (fully clothed) sex scenes ever filmed at the midway point of the film.Unfortunately, the third act of Year of the Gun descends into mindless violence and a preposterous ending that makes no sense. Sharon Stone has commented that she feels that Frankenheimer did not have the kind of budget he needed to make the film which explains the casting of B-level actor McCarthy and the clueless Italian replicant Pankow in the cast. McCarthy has also stated that he was drunk for most of the shooting.But the kidnapping of Moro is the MacGuffin in the story - the heart of the drama is the relationship between McCarthy's wimpish American journalist David and the two women in his life. There's Lea, the Italian divorcée with a dark side, and Stone's Alison, a cynical, amoral war photographer. The scenes between David and Lea are far more engaging than those between David and Alison. McCarthy and Stone not only have zero chemistry, but he keeps tolerating her aggressive behaviour and prying questions.The film is also the victim of poor cinematography. Bad camera angles, out of focus shots, and lack of close-ups in scenes where the characters are speaking while we are watching them from across a room with their backs turned towards us. There are many scenes which lead one to believe that the film was severely underbudgeted and Frankenheimer was either under time pressure to shoot quickly and only use masters rather than filming close-ups and standard reverses. It makes no sense given the kind of absolute mastery Frankenheimer displayed in films like Grand Prix, The Train, and the best film of his later years, Ronin.But somehow the film does have some gripping moments although the last fifteen minutes effectively undermine the overall impression it leaves.As far as the quality of the DVD itself is concerned, it is a crude and faded copy of a VHS transfer and has not been printed from the original film master copy. This is such a cheap and shoddy DVD that they company which made the transfer - probably illegally - did not bother to include English substitles for the five or six scenes which are entirely in Italian. Fortunately I speak Italian so I was able to understand most of the dialogue, but the absence of subtitles will leave many viewers struggling to understand some critical scenes in the film. Amazon should place a permanent ban on the companies selling this pathetic excuse of a DVD that is likely a pirate copy.
