Title: Go ahead--learn another language!
Review: This book seems to be aimed at people who want to learn another language, for whatever reason, but are not sure how to go about it, or have had bad learning experiences in the past but want to try again, or simply have underestimated the effort required to learn another language and need encouragement. In this sense, Lynn McBride, with her energetic, economical prose and delightful sense of humor, provides an informational and inspirational guide--let me emphasize the adjective "inspirational." The author makes very clear that learning another language is work, but that it must be kept enjoyable. She also makes it clear that there are many approaches and techniques for learning a language, with a strong emphasis on using as many of these as possible. The few negative reviews of the book seem to come from individuals who are familiar with studying other languages (often challenging ones like Mandarin and Thai); I don't think that the author is directing herself to those readers. The typical American contemplating learning another language (probably much like Lynn and her husband Ron some years ago) needs some help with the task, and this book provides it. As a professor of Spanish and Latin American literature (bilingual for many years but once monolingual in English) for nearly half a century, I can only applaud her effort. This book has a really important potential audience. More Americans need to learn another foreign language, and this book might encourage them to do so.

Title: A very engaging read with lots of helpful hints and personal experiences
Review: This book was exactly what I was looking for. I am a longtime student and teacher of world languages and this book is one I will definitely share with my students. The author's experiences are heart warming and inspirational, demonstrating that even though studying and speaking a new language can be difficult and a little scary sometimes, the rewards are fantastic. The author also shows how much can come along with learning and experiencing a language, getting to know the people, the culture and all of the other worthwhile and exciting things you can learn with a "used "brain.Read this book! You' ll be glad you did.

Title: This is not going to make it any easier
Review: The ideas are fine, but there is very little detail. I read it in less than an hour. I doubt I will delve into it again.

Title: Good easy read with helpful tips
Review: Lynn McBride has written an easy to read book that should give hope to every anglophile dreaming of being able to speak French. There are plenty of tips that will let you head off in different directions to find the study method that suits you best. The book is not a 'How to' book, rather a helpful primer and guide to where to look and the potential pitfalls one should be prepared to encounter.Easy and delightful read in amongst the heavy slog of actually learning the language.

Title: Enjoyable and informative
Review: This is a very easy-to-read, informative, and enjoyable book. I'm a life-long learner of French...and I really enjoyed this quick, accessible book that provided some very good tips and places to go to look for other resources to learn French. The author also publishes a great blog that is another treasure that I just discovered and subscribed to. Highly recommend this book, if you are looking to just have an enjoyable, quick-read resource of ideas to either learn a new language, or add variety to your own personal language learning quest. Highly recommend this book!

Title: A very basic guide
Review: I had great hopes that this book might push me to the next level in my ongoing struggle to learn italian. Unforfunately, for me, there was very little new information. The book only reinforced what i already have been doing. It was very short. I read it in one afternoon. I was somewhat disappointed.

Title: Best starter idea book I've read
Review: I've been studying a foreign language seriously for about 10 years and this little book reaffirms many ideas and suggestions I have discovered and relied on during that time. It is short and sweet, to the point about many areas and pitfalls one will encounter trying to learn a foreign language as an older person. It is well written and well organized. It's great! I recommend it highly especially for those just starting out on their language learning adventure. I have had 6 native language teachers and they all have used some of the methods mentioned here. Buy it. Read it and get going and have fun.Mel

Title: useful tips and what one must do
Review: I am 66 years old so my brain is both old and used. I am not fluent in any language but English and I want to change that with the help of Alliance Francaise and Rosetta Stone. This book lays out what is needed and how much work it is/will be. It also gives a number of things the person can do which I hadn't thought of to help in the process. There are no shortcuts but it can be fun for the truly motivated. I think it is a very practical book.

Review: Loved this book! Have read it several times now in the process of learning a foreign language and each time have picked up new tips to help me in my studies. Lynn writes in an engaging and humorous style, which makes her book easy and fun to read, but at the same time it is extremely helpful and highly motivational. I would recommend it to anyone with a "used" brain who wants to learn a new language!

Review: I read it once but don't think l'll go back to it. She relies heavily on quotes from others. The section on 'what resources are out there' was particularly disappointing. There was a general account of the various kinds of resource but little evaluation. She needed to do more research for this.
