A seminal work on treating self-mutilation, revised and updated with illuminating case studies and newly available resources.
Nearly a decade ago, Cutting boldly addressed a traumatic psychological disorder now affecting as many as two million Americans and one in fifty adolescents. More than that, it revealed self-mutilation as a comprehensible, treatable disorder, no longer to be evaded by the public and neglected by professionals. Using copious examples from his practice, Steven Levenkron traces the factors that predispose a personality to self-mutilation: genetics, family experience, childhood trauma, and parental behavior. Written for sufferers, parents, friends, and therapists, Cutting explains why the disorder manifests in self-harming behaviors and describes how patients can be helped.

Title: Better Understanding the whys of SelfCutting
Review: This was a very interesting book in that the fact was brought out how little is really know about the whys of cutting, let alone how to cure this problem. And that few if any in the field of Therapy have an interest or desire to advance their knowledge in this field of Mental Health due to fear, because of their lack of knowledge, for the most part, I would advise this book be read by all therapist to awaken an interest, if for no other reason than that they would have a working knowledge in this field of expertise, quenching any fear of encountering those who are plagued with this type of mental illness...caused by their own ignorance, lack of knowledge, understanding and/or interest.I thank the author for making his plunge into this field of mental health because of the rising (and still rising) occurrence of self-mutilation in our youth and others as time goes on. Caring love and understanding is needed in this area of understanding.

Title: A Fine Overview.
Review: I've known a lot of individuals who engaged in self-mutilating behaviors over the years but this is the first book that I've ever purchased specifically addressing the subject. In the past, I never delved too deeply into this particular area of mental illness, but I'm glad I did because Dr. Levenkron provides a thorough explanation concerning all aspects of cutting including what it is, how to identify it, characteristics of those afflicted with it, why they do it, what feelings in the patient the act brings about, and, most importantly, the recommended methods of treatment. For me, that's about all you can ask for in an introductory text. Something else that added to its instructional value are the case study examples. The client summaries were textured but not so long as to distract from the general discussion. Overall, it was a well-planned and executed work.

Title: Good book on a tough subject
Review: I found this book quite helpful. I am working with a young woman who has a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. A number of other therapists and a Residential Treatment Center had not had much success. Several family members are also involved, and this book was very helpful in explaining (in laymen's terms) what was probably going on, and why I was taking the position I had in treating her. Prognosis is fair to poor, but this book gave reason for some hope.

Title: Direct and To-The Point with Compassion
Review: This book is very direct and to-the-point while being compassionate and non-judgmental - a perspective that I very much appreciate. The narratives that describe actual people who have experienced the practice of cutting are very helpful. I found the probable causes and explanations for self-cutting useful and applicable. This book explores not just the person who is experiencing the self-cutting, but the social and family dynamics as well. Be prepared to self-reflect if you are a family member who is close to someone who is experiencing self-cutting. I highly recommend this book for family members and therapists alike.

Title: Dated and Too Situationally Specific
Review: The book is well-written and approaches this difficult subject matter with respect and dignity. There are plenty of case examples, including conversations, to give an idea of some of the mindsets of patients who self injure. However, reading this book nearly 20 years after its publication and having experience in the mental health community it is apparent that a lot of progress has been made in understanding the subject of cutting and self-harm since the book was written. The case examples tend to be on the extreme end of the spectrum; I didn't feel the book covered a wide enough spectrum of "levels of mental health" in clients who self injure. In particular I noted an obvious lack of examples of adults who self-injure. The book focuses on teens and older children coming from rather intense backgrounds, which felt overly specific and seemed to ignore (or present a total ignorance of) those who self-injure as a whole as we are aware of this issue today. While the author attempts to break down the taboo barriers in the discussion of self-harm and cutting, (and admittedly, there are still many in the mental health community who struggle to adequately support or help those who self-injure) the subject almost comes off as sensational due to its focus on the extreme. There is still useful and well-grounded information in this book. As I said, the author led the charge at the time in understanding self-injury and presenting it as a treatable issue. Just keep in mind that in comparison to what we know now in the present day, the information comes off as a bit narrowly focused.

Title: Informative
Review: Not understanding what my daughter was going through as a cutter I purchased this book. It has been very helpful and given me a lot of insight into what caused her to start cutting and also why it's so hard for her to stop. I do think it this book is more slanted toward those trying to understand and help a person who is cutting rather than actual cutters. I have not read other books on cutting so I don't have a comparison of similar books.

Title: Excellent resource
Review: This is an excellent book for parents that have a self-harmer in their family. It is a painful read, but very educating on what the possible causes are for cutting, treatment, and recovery.Parents: you have to do more than just read...you need to act. We have someone who self harms in our family and are trying to get professional help as well as change how we parent, communicate, and interact with our children. It is a painful experience, but our children are worth everything!

Review: This book is truly a must read if you in any way are dealing with someone who is cutting or if you are cutting yourself. It's raw and honest and to the point, but described in a way that doesn't condemn anyone. For me, the book meant that I finally understood "cutting" and the reasons behind it as well as how to walk through it. The truth can hurt sometimes, but if you are serious about helping someone or yourself, then this book is one you have to read. Possible the only one you need to read.

Review: The author speaks with authority, understanding and compassion on the subject of self-harm. The key takeaway was understanding that self-harm is not "crazy behaviour", but a very intelligent way of a person to dissociate from overwhelming thoughts and feelings. By tracking the whole lifecycle of the behaviour, tremendous insight may be gained into why someone self-harms, and therefore what their specific road to healing might be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to understand the nature of self-harm, and is looking for a way to heal.
