One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter Paul And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival. The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated political concerns through music in an unprecedented way. At the same time that they reached millions with their social message, they acheived phenomenal mass popularity.

Title: Fab Folk Trio's Best
Review: You know you're gettin' real old when you have a conversation with 20-something (or even 30-something) friend and you mention Peter, Paul & Mary and the person just gives you a blank stare. I got to thinking about the Fab Folk Trio because the political climate is...well, let's just say--unfortunate (with eerily similiar 1960's overtones.) I also got to thinking about Peter Yarrow's song "The Great Mandala" (on this CD.) Trouble was, for some reason I thought Richie Havens wrote it & that P, P & M were chorus backup--so I kept looking for the original and for lyrics with all the wrong information (yes, sometimes I am prone to air-headedness.) Once again, Amazon comes to the rescue in the end. In fact, I'm beginning to feel like a walking billboard for Amazon--hint, hint--any comps gladly accepted.Anyway, I held back a star just because there were a couple of songs omitted, such as the trios' haunting rendition of "Polly Vaughn" that I would really have like to have seen included. Oh well, I've been told 'you can't have everything." How 'bout 4 and 1/2 stars?Hearing "The Great Mandala" again made the search well worth while. It is one of Peter, Paul & Mary's most dramatic & uncompromising hits.Peace.Blonde on BlondeReflections in a Crystal WindHigh Flying BirdWe Shall Overcome: Complete Carnegie Hall ConcertReadings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat GenerationStep Forward: The Next GenerationThe Best Of The Beat GenerationThe Essential Dave Brubeck

Title: Music From Old Friends
Review: My wife and I both grew up during the late 50's/early 60s folk music movement. We have numerous CD's (and vinyl) of some of the greats of the genre, but realized the we had no CD's of Peter, Paul and Mary! We picked this one out as the best example of their work, and it is fantastic! We could sing along with all the tracks and reminisce about how these three exemplified folk music for many years. A great compendium that will not disappoint.

Title: Folksville Revisited
Review: My heart fluttered when this collection was brought to my attention. The idea you could get all their familiar hits, plus some additional gems, like Paul Stookey's "Wedding Song (There Is Love)" seemed like a no-brainer. I've been wanting one of their compilations for some time now, having missed their '(Ten) Years Together/The Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary' on vinyl for years, but seeing their selection on this C.D. made it a done deal. The C.D. keeps all the songs of the former collection intact, but the additional material makes one beg for an explanation why they hadn't thought of it earlier. (The answer to that is probably along the same lines as other artists: They want you to buy the original albums and only refer to "'Ultimate Greatest Hits" packages as a follow up.) Now's as good a time as any. One of the great advantages of this C.D. is the crystal clear sound. On the CD player in my living room or in the car or even in my MP3 player, these vintage songs translate better than nearly any oldies venue I can think of, much like the resonance of Sam Cooke, which is the way I wish they'd all sound. Having a look at their former collection from 2003 (of the same title) reveals some improvement in their content. Now to the selection. They wisely keep what we've grown accustomed to intact. "Lemon Tree," "500 Miles," "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" all sound great with their trademark three-part harmonies backed up with the barest essential instrumentation. Then, there's the additions, such as the gospel-like "Early in the Morning," Woody Gurthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," and Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?".The Post PPM years produced a few gems as well. Besides the aformentioned "Wedding Song...," Peter Yarrow's "Weave Me the Sunshine" and Mary Travers' version of John Denver's "Follow Me" are worthy additions. Honorable mention should go to later songs "El Salvador" and "Don't Laugh Me," which update the subject matter well for their legacy. After repeated listenings to this vintage collection, I wonder sometimes why I should listen to any processed recordings again. The fresh ingredients of voices and instruments are so basic, yet essential that they almost beg for an updated response for using synthesizers and digital recordings. The selection notes indicate remastering of their recordings, so there has been a happy translation to this C.D., but the liner notes are very good about relaying their history, which is a formidable one indeed. (As many know well, besides Seeger, Guthrie, and John Denver, Bob Dylan penned many of their popular covers.)
