From the Appalachians in northern Georgia to the Rockies in Montana, mountain towns across the United States beckon with their scenic surroundings, amazing views, plentiful outdoor recreation and abundant fresh air.
Not all mountain towns are created equal, though. Some have a declining population. Others have high crime statistics, poor infrastructure or a high poverty rate.
Here, however, are 36 mountain towns worth consideration when retirement time arrives. These places come in a wide price range, although livable mountain towns tend to be on the more expensive side.
All of these communities have safe neighborhoods, a local hospital or one nearby, a steady or growing population and an overall quality of life that makes them a place people want to live.
We provide an overview of each town, taking a look at population numbers, housing prices, climate, political leanings, percentage of the population age 45 or better, amenities and things to do, public transit, education levels, elevation and more.
To us, a mountain town might not have a terribly high elevation – for example, towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains do not have the same elevation as many Rocky Mountain towns – but if it is surrounded by hills and peaks, then it is a mountain town. Similarly, if a town has a high elevation and is close to a mountain range, but not actually in the mountain range per se, then it is a mountain town.
Please note that this book is not intended to be an in-depth examination of each town. It is instead an overview, a starting point for finding the best mountain community for your retirement.
