Now an original series from FX starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman: a former CIA officer, who's living off the grid, finds himself on the run from people who want to kill him—“[a] harrowing hunt-and-hide adventure” (The New York Times Book Review).
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don’t have multiple driver’s licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, or two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.
Thirty-five years ago, as a young army intelligence hotshot, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase acted according to his conscience—and triggered consequences he never could have anticipated. To this day, someone still wants him dead. And just when he thought he was finally safe, Chase is confronted with the history he spent much of his life trying to escape.
Edgar Award–winning author Thomas Perry writes thrillers that move “almost faster than a speeding bullet” (Wall Street Journal). The Old Man is his latest whip-smart standalone novel, and has been adapted into a critically acclaimed television series starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman.
“Perry drives deep into Jack Reacher territory in this stand-alone [novel] . . . Swift, unsentimental, and deeply satisfying.” —Kirkus Reviews

Title: Excellent can not put down
Review: There was nothing to dislike. You can not waif for the end, but when you get to it, you wish there was more. It was so exciting. It left you breathless in places. I would recommend it to anyone who likes exciting reads.

Title: Nearly a 5, except.....
Review: I read all Thomas Perry's works. I find him to be one of the most consistently good writers out there. Of course, some books I like more than others but even so, I always think Thomas Perry on not a great day is still better than most writers on their best. Anyway, I love stories about characters being chased and Perry uses his chases to move the story along at a good clip. Now on to Perry on not a great day. I do not 'get' the female character. Yes, she is there to help the old man blend in. Couples are less suspicious than one as Perry tells us and of course, some readers want a love interest. It is her backstory I object to. At first, I shrugged it off. Divorced, living on alimony with two adult children in pricey grad schools courtesy of an ex with bucks. She is not employed but is a serious pianist. Late in the book, Perry drops a bomb that blows up her backstory, at least for me. Something happened to her at age about seventeen and her parents reacted in a way that is not possible and said things that no one could believe and this woman, a girl then but even so, believed and apparently continued to believe what she had been told. I wondered at the time if Perry plans a sequel that will explain. Please understand, the woman's past does not affect the old man or the people chasing them one bit. This is a really good story, well paced and interesting. Perry is a fine writer who always gives good return. I should think anyone who likes the chase will enjoy this book. I get distracted when things do not make sense to me, but that is just me.

Title: Captivating
Review: More like 4.5 stars, but rounding up. Unlike the large majority of Amazon reviewers, this reviewer looks for characters, distinct and authentic dialog, and energetic narrative, whereas most seem to emphasize what the book is about and ignore writing expertise or lack of it. In this case, both are present in fine form. Unlike my previous read of Mr. Perry, albeit having been written 25 years previous to this, the story moves itself such that this can be a relatively short read.Writing style is key to this reviewer, any inconsistencies standing out like whatever that is in the punch bowl. His has changed a bit from admittedly the only other of his books I have read to date, having a bit more Lee-Child-ish third-person chop to it.I have found that with even excellent thrillers (as this is), there is urgency at some point to unwind the story and wrap it up too quickly, as does this one. Authors perhaps have become bored and anxious to move on to the next project, or as seems more likely, she or he has created complexities that are hard to unwind without leaving loose ends. The denouement of this book is abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying in that regard, I would guess in order not to shut the door on a sequel.I quite enjoyed this book, and intend to read many more his. Why have I not been aware of this great writer previously? I suspect because for whatever reason his books have not been front and center on newsstands (racks where actual books and magazines are sold, for those under 40), while poorly written stories (looking at you J.P., D.B.) often are. What are the behind the scenes machinations by publishers and distributors that get books in front of readers?

Title: Prescient
Review: Prescient - I just finished the book, and in the last part the hero says this about Derna, Libya, a city I'd never heard of: ânot a place where he wanted to be stranded.â Today's news report a devastating flood killing over 5000 people there when two dams burst. Although the book is not as good as the TV show it inspired (and led me to buy it), itâs hard to put down. Like many thrillers, it requires a massive suspension of disbelief, and so much is preposterous. The bad bureaucrats in military intelligence never come to life, and too many pages are given to the young operative who empathizes with the old man but has no further role to play even while we continue to read about him. The hero is super competent but not all that likable (also the case with his female partner). Nonetheless we get sucked in as he tries to outsmart his pursuers. In comparison to other thrillers I've recently read, The Old Man lacks the cultural insights or vivid writing of The Harlem Shuffle or We Are All the Same in the Dark, but it moves along, like The 6:20 Man but without that bookâs ambition and pretensions.

Title: The Series / The Book
Review: I saw the series about a year ago. I just read Tom Perryâs version. Both were amazing, riveting and very well crafted. I urge anyone to partake of both adventures. Iâll be reading more of Tom Perryâs works and waiting impatiently for season 2 of The Old Man.

Title: Not the same story as the FX series
Review: Although it has the some of the same characters, this is a very different story than the FX series. Entertaining but not a particularly sophisticated plot. Somewhat gratuitous character development late in the story that really didn't add a whole lot right before you never hear about the character again.

Review: Dan Chase, a retired army intelligence agent, suddenly sees his past brutally catching up on him. 35 years ago, his last mission in Libya has turned sour and became a complete disaster. His name, reputation and honor got thrown into the mud. This Old Man takes us on a massive and ruthless manhunt. He might be old but his skills as an agent are still perfectly tuned, and the next generations of intelligence agents could learn a lot from him. Perry has constructed a strong storyline. It is a pure entertainment and a guaranteed page-turner. The author succeeded in having the readers getting attached to his main character who is on the run and has nothing to lose. We get to see, learn and enjoy all the details that this man deploys to stay alive and safe. This independent novel from Thomas Perry is a hit and a must read!

Review: DifÃcil interromper a leitura.

Review: The show got me curious and I am glad it did. What a nice read this was.A quickly paced thriller that most could probably get through in a long haul flight. I particularly like the simpler approach to the intrigue.
