Title: SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST
Review: In the mid 70s through most the 80s I coached gymnastics professionally. During that time at a couple of US Gymnastic Federation national conventions Thomas Tutko gave workshops on sports psychology. First time I took his workshop, was impressed, then bought his book. I LITERALLY made this book into a curriculum for my top gymnasts who trained 6 hours a day 6 days a week, twelve weeks in summer. One hour was devoted to Tutko's regimen. It took about 6-8 weeks to get it between their ears, but it was a magnificent process. The following year ALL my gymnast's scores and performances DRAMATICALLY improved 20-30%. All had a much higher degree of enjoyment of their hard work. At the next national convention I took his workshop again and commented on what a major impact his book had on my athletes. His book sold out that day! ANYONE doing anything competitive at all I highly recommend this book. I refer people to `Sports Psyching' often and gift this book occasionally. The applications to sports can also be converted to all facets of life. I am not in general big "fan" of psychology. Some psychology is a form of intellectual narcissism, arrogance and heresy. Sports Psyching is the finest information in psychology field I have experienced YTD. Applying techniques from this book actually had MEASURABLE RESULTS when coaching women's gymnastics. Investing in this book has a great pay pack. 2014 Update - another fine psychologist is Martin Seligman . . . found fascinating he observed most of psychology directed at deficits - chose to make happiness a science. His work is laudable - but not as intense or as `measurable results' as Tutko's work, who has evaluation methods, direction to move, evaluate, and progress. I `heard' Tutko was recruited to implement in business what he did in sports, and observe a lot of what looks like sports psych applied to business, particularly in marketing and sales.

Title: Greatest Sports Book I Have Ever Read
Review: This book is definitely the greatest book about sports I have ever read! It makes me really think about the main resaon to participate in sports: Do I enjoy it?The whole object of the book is to think back to the time when you played your sport to the best of your ability; and thenre-live the moments to build up your confidence. Then any time during actual competition you start getting distracted, then recall to mind the best day you ever had to get back on track. This is a real no-nonsense common sense approach to overcome all the fears, worries, anxieties of participating in sports. It suggests that an athlete simply relax, participate in your sport and have some fun, unstead of trying to be the "big winner" or trying to be #1. But instead, just focus on performing the activity the best you can, and try not to think about rewards or punishments. It comes with an inventory to diagnose some of the reasons why you might be stopping yourself from performing at your very best. I really wish I had this book in my high school sporting years!!!

Title: excellent how-to to better the mental game
Review: Lots of authors emphasis the the importance of the mental side of sports, but Sports Psyching explains how to do it. From how-to of muscle relaxation to deep breathing to better concentration - the steps to metal success are all there.
