Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool for mood improvement, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. There is now overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve low mood-from feelings of stress and anxiety to full depressive episodes.
With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, Michael Otto and Jasper Smits, well-known authorities on cognitive behavioral therapy, take their empirically-based mood regulation strategy from the clinic to the general public. Written for those with diagnosed mood disorders as well as those who simply need a new strategy for managing the low mood and stress that is an everyday part of life, this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood, with a particular emphasis on understanding the relationship between mood and motivation. Readers learn to attend carefully to mood states prior to and following physical activity in order to leverage the full benefits of exercise, and that the trick to maintaining an exercise program is not in applying more effort, but in arranging one's environment so that less effort is needed. As a result readers not only acquire effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but are introduced to a broader philosophy for enhancing overall well-being. Providing patient vignettes, rich examples, and extensive step-by-step guidance on overcoming the obstacles that prevent adoption of regular exercise for mood, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety is a unique translation of scientific principles of clinical and social psychology into an action-based strategy for mood change.

Title: No more excuses
Review: This book is simply amazing! I read it all in one night because it is so interesting and well written. Before reading this book I loved coming up with excuses to put off exercise TODAY but now I have no more excuses. I work out every day. Anytime I think I came up with a valid excuse to work out tomorrow I remember that Dr. Smits mentioned it in his book and it is not a reason to skip a workout now. This book also addresses attitudes toward exercise and their impact. This book helped me make an exercise a fun habit that I look forward to.

Title: Great book
Review: Arrived in perfect condition, still smells like new book. The book arrived on time as well. As for the material, this isn't a "how to" type of book, as much as it is a "let's prepare ourselves first". So... it's prepping you to do exercise, mentally and physically. That's left for you to decide. I honestly loved this book. I enjoyed it so much I wrote an English paper on it. It helped validate why I do the things I do and why I feel the way I feel. Validation goes a lot way for me. If you need that, I suggest you read this book. Maybe you could even read it to help you understand some people you know. I'd recommend this book to anyone, but it was written by psychologists, some terms are hard to understand and it's not everyday vocabulary. I read it with dictionary.com open.

Title: Motivating!
Review: If you need a motivation, this is a perfect read!I have been exercising for my whole life daily and never had problem pushing myself. But lately it just didn't feel right. I didn't get that feel good kick from exercise anymore. Now I realize it was all in my head, in the way I thought or did not think about it. This book gave ma a new perspective. Not only motivation and inspiration for exercises, but also for experiencing every moment in a new way. Also, no matter how sore or tired I am I am looking forward to my exercise routine every day now !

Review: This is a book about starting and maintaining (not quitting) a reasonable exercise program for both physical health and mental well-being. It is practical and is based upon research. It includes anecdotes and also quotes from successful athletes. This book helped me start and maintain my own strenuous workout routine.

Title: AMAZING!!
Review: This book has changed my life! I was expecting to just read a list of exercises that best change your moods but this book goes a lot deaper than that! It makes you look at self talk and inner coaches and trains you to look at exercise and motivation a whole new way. This book gives you the tools to change the way you view your day to day situations, then turing the negative feelings into possitive ones with the added bonus of motivation to work out. This book we very well written, highly informative, and a real joy to read.

Title: Lacks appeal
Review: The book may very well be informative and helpful, but as a person who suffers from clinical depression, I could not have found the cover less inviting. The color itself makes me want to turn and run in the other direction. Maybe that's how I'll get my exercise. It won't help me if I don't even want to pick it up to look at it. I realize that we all have our own issues and triggers, but of all the covers they could have printed for this book, all I have to say is, really??

Title: Get it!
Review: This is a great book for anyone who wants to start exercising. I was not physically active for at least a year and reading this book made me restart again. What I appreciated most about the book is that it is very well written, made me laugh at parts and did not sound preachy. It does not appear to be written by two exercise buffs but by people who know how hard it can be to get yourself out the door and who can still convince you that it's worth it.

Review: This is an excellent book. Luckily I bought it before starting another round of anti-depressants! Remember to start gently and take time to build up your exercise especially if you have had a lapse - probably in no small part due to your depresssion!

Review: This book is great. I think doctors push pills too often and don't discuss alternative treatments. Exercise to deal with or overcome depression/anxiety is so effective. Depression steals your motivation and it really is hard to get out and exercise or just get off the couch or out of bed, but this book can help motivate you.

Review: I found this book very motivating and was raring to go with some exercise. It has a lot of supporting evidence for the efficacy of lifting mood through exercise. I was hoping for some sort of training programme or way to gradually introduce exercise into your life. Unfortunately when i started running I got an injury almost immediatley and now can't exercise at all so I am back to square one. I think it would be useful to provide more information about safe ways to start exercising, and suggestions of different types of exercise that would suit different people with different abilities. There is a section about what heart rate to aim for etc, but this is a bit cumbersome for a beginner and I found myself put off by the effort involved in calculating all these stats. I just want to be able to do some exercise !

Review: The book is a little narrow in scope. It is good for someone who has mild case of depression and anxiety, but not for someone who is going through a major depressive episode.
