Title: Not fancy, but does the job at a great price point
Review: I acquired this NAS storage device when I upgraded my Wi-Fi from a 802.11ac router to a 802.11ax router. My older router had a port to which I had connected a USB 3 drive, but my newer router lacks a USB port. At first I was reluctant to get into a full-blown NAS system with its own software, because I've been totally satisfied with a plain old USB 3 drive attached to my network. I didn't see the point of spending hundreds of dollars, and began by looking for a USB-to-Ethernet converter to plug my USB drive into an Ethernet port of my new router. But then I found a refurbished BUFFALO LinkStation SoHo 720. At around $300 it seemed very reasonable because it included two 2TB drives that could be run in RAID 0 or 1 configuration. Other NAS systems typically require purchasing the disk drives separately. Some of the reviews I read indicated that the software was very basic and not too intuitive to use. But basic was all I wanted, and I did not find the software difficult to use at all. This NAS also has USB ports for attaching additional drives, so I do not have to lose the USB drive I had been using. Win-win-win all-around; I am very happy that I acquired the BUFFALO LinkStation SoHo 720.

Title: Good, Solid NAS
Review: I've had this devices for a bit over a month and if you're looking for an inexpensive NAS, this is the way to go. I bought the 8TB version with 4TB usable in a Raid1 array. I had some problems early on, and did a factory reset and rebuilt the array to correct everything. The device is working fine and I have good throughput from my laptop (wireless). It would be a bit better if it had a wireless connection available for it, but that isn't a deal breaker for me. The cabled connection is fine and provides good throughput. The interface is a bit underdeveloped, but functions well enough - especially for the average home user.Good value, great storage (since it comes with disk included). Minus one star for my initial setup problems and the underdeveloped interface.

Title: NO NAS
Review: If you're thinking of buying one of these to use as network storage on a windows 10 or 11 system don't bother.it works great as NAS with win7, probably XP too. Spend your money on something that works like it's supposed to.Follow-up: One roadblock to registering the unit was that they want a photp proof of purchase. So I used snipping tool to get a screen shot, saved it as a jpeg file and selected the file on the registration page. Error message came back that the file type was not recognized, Tried 3 times, same result. opened a chat window for help and 'no one was available at this time. 11:30 Eastern or 15:30UTC.Go elsewhere, you'll thank me.

Title: Simple expectations not met.
Review: I bought the BUFFALO LinkStation SoHo 2-Bay Desktop 8TB to serve two purposes. First to act as a repository for seldom accessed documents and photos and secondly, as a redundant Time Machine backup solution. As many have stated, the drives cannot be partitioned to maintain unique space allocations. This is accomplished by setting user/group quotas for individually created shared folders. Not the best solution but okay. Once the quota is reached, any process trying to go further does in fact fail. Will the user be notified when the threshold is breached? Despite what the User Manual says, email notifications related to quotas being exceeded are not supported by the LinkStation. Buffalo Support says that is available with the higher priced TeraStation.Does the UI show the amount of space used by each of the shared folders or user/group? No, only at the higher array level of total space. To get to the shared folder level, one must poke around in Finder or run commands from a Terminal session. It took some doing to realize the Time Machine backups were working and files across multiple targets were all available.Things that do work.Sleep timer works well. Can be slow to fully be available so set the wake a bit earlier than needed.Support of a UPS power backup. A quick test did generate an alert and the LinkStation did power off after the set time limit.Direct Copy from a UPS device. This is an all or nothing affair from what I can tell. If additional files are added after a Direct Copy operation, the new plus the older ones are all copied to a new directory with the current date.Direct Copy can be initiated from the UI or by the function button which is located on the rear of the device. Not the most convenient location.Summary.I haven't tried any of the more advanced functions such as Web Access, Active Directory, iTunes server, etc. I have no need for such features from this deviceTwo stars for the LinkStation overall plus one added for the responsiveness of the Buffalo Support team I contacted several times. Having spent 3 weeks with it, I'll most likely be keeping it rather than start the whole discovery process from scratch with something different.Side note.It took over 52 hours to erase all data and reset the unit to factory defaults. If you have thoughts of returning the device, plan accordingly. The time to complete estimates were extremely accurate. So why can't it tell me how much space a shared folder or user is consuming?

Title: Satisfies my needs
Review: It took me many months off and on to finally purchased this unit. I found setup manageable so far but it is not 100% finished with time being the limiter. It took me lead time to define in my mind what is it I really want. First, my wife and I have 20+ years of data that needed protection and numerous external units is just not the answer. Second, call me ill-informed but I do not trust ANY 3rd party cloud service. Third, I'm a believer in the K.I.S.S rule with a lockout of apps I don't need nor have to research if something is "safe" to install. It is a little noisy but it is at least 5' away from my desk in my comm closet so it isn't an issue for me. Possibly could have saved some money with a diskless solution but call me lazy I have just a single manufacturer's warranty to keep track of. I recommend this to any SOHO business who needs a data solution on the cheap and is maybe a little paranoid.

Review: Using this as a media drive for the different HTPCs I have in the house and it works perfectly!Came installed with two 4TB Western Digital Blue (IMO decent quality drives) hard drives. I changed the config so instead of configured as RAID 1 they're two distinct drives on the network giving me the full 8TB.The Buffalo NAS utility is lightweight and has no impact on system performance, installs easily and recognizes the drives without issue. The NAS itself performs well when wired to the router and the HTPCs connecting through WIFI. No buffering issues even with 4K video.

Customers say
