The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.”
A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the listener into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia andis unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

Title: Definitely Engaging
Review: Not everything or even everyone is as it seems. Or maybe just stating plain intriguing. I could certainly see how people would want to read this book more than once. It kept me involved and guessing. The prologue really was a great way to start the story. The characters were interesting and kept a great dialog going for the entire book. I can't even say who my favorite character was since they just all really added depth to the book.I am a little surprised that this book is still available for reading. I would assume that too many people would find some things in this book as very offensive. I think the time when this book was set makes this story even more interesting. Mental health was still such a new concept. The practice in this book is very true and hard to understand. Some language and sex/sexual encounters/innuendos. Trigger warnings of suicide/mental health.

Title: Well crafted
Review: This was a good old fashion psychological thriller that was enjoyable to read. I didn't see the movie before hand and I'm glad I didn't (although both are equally good). Dennis Lehane did a wonderful job at keeping you wondering "who done it".A pair of US Marshalls, Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, go to an island off the coast of Massachusetts that houses a hospital for the criminal insane to investigate a patient's disappearance. From the first moment they arrive they are suspicious of everyone. Things just do not add up. With the approach of a hurricane, all heck breaks loose allowing the Marshalls to do more snooping around. This leads to even more questions that they cannot answer. To top it all off, Marshall Teddy Daniels is dealing with the loss of his wife and just knows that her killer is on the island. He's running out of time as he tries to find a missing patient, the killer, and keep from losing his own mind or at least from letting the hospital make others think he's lost his mind to keep him silent. You know that there is going to be twists and turns but when they happen you really can't imagine that the happen the way they do. The entire first two-thirds of the book lays out an intricate world and sets up a great plot only to be completely spun out of control in the last third in a very good way. The book ends with you in just amazement. Trying to understand everything that happened and coming to terms with it. Well written and creatively crafted to keep you turning page after page. I would read it again just to see what I missed.

Title: and it would end like that. No
Review: Oh my god. This book screwed with my head so hard.A friend of mine sent an explosion of all-caps texts when she finished and implored me to read this book, so I dubiously bought it on Kindle. It sat there for a while until I was on a trip with not much to do, so I started reading Shutter Island. Unintelligently, I started at 10 pm and therefore was up till 1 in the morning, because I kept telling myself I would stop after the next chapter and that just...wasn't...going...to...happen. About 70% of the way through the book--disappearances and psycho weather and government conspiracies and everything great--I thought it was almost at a resolution. There'd probably be a last tense scene, and then Teddy, the main character, would go expose all the conspiracies and torture experiments or whatnot, and it would end like that.No.No, instead Teddy becomes the most unreliable narrator I've ever come across, and I got more and more tense and freaked out, which ended with me up at 1 am, having just finished the book and lying there, heart hammering, thinking WTF.There are a lot of different ways to interpret the ending, and a lot of reason to want to yell at the author "how the hell can you just drop us here and leave it like this? what kind of literary monster are you??" I won't go into spoilers here. But I've got to say, especially from someone who doesn't read a whole lot of mysteries or psychological books (unless they're political nonfiction), this is one of the most gripping and memorable and thought-provoking and downright alarming books I've read possibly ever. The writing was also not skimped on--it wasn't dry or weak, but actually quite beautiful in places. (I have to say that since it was set in the 1950s, there seemed to be a little racism in some of the characters' mindsets or interactions or the way people were described...I think this may have been intentional, to give historical tone or whatnot, but it was a bit uncomfortable at times, if you're the type to be bothered by that sort of subtle non-PC-ness.)But altogether, I would give this book as many stars as I can.

Title: Haunting
Review: This is a haunting story that is beautifully written. It's a mystery wrapped in heartbreak. For those who watched the movie, read the book! For those who didn't see the movie, read the book!A US Marshall goes to a hospital for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of a woman who murdered her three children. To say more would spoil this exquisite story, so just read the book! There is violence and some explicit language in the book. The world created in the book is vivid and there's a starkness to the characters that adds to the atmospheric quality. It's a moving mystery that I definitely recommend.

Review: Two cops from Boston head over to a remote island far from the mainland. They're there to investigate a case as a patient from the asylum on that island has gone missing. It's supposed to be a top security asylum for the most dangerous patients and there's no way off the island apart from the ferry so where is she? There's also nowhere to hide as the rocky coastline will see to that. The cops continue to lead a complex investigation and you just know something is going on. The patients tell them one thing and the guards another. From the start, you know this is going to be weird. The asylum, the island, the fact that someone is missing, the fact that one cop has a personal reason to be on this case....The build up, the sense of foreboding and that elusive voice whispering in your ear as you read. What can you believe and what can't you? The ending is very clever. I read back to see if I'd spotted the clues. It's a treat of a reveal and it's a great journey getting there. Not sure if I would ever want to go there for a booktrail though so thank goodness this island is fictional (although it is inspired by a visit the author did once).
