The New York Times–bestselling author of The Interestings compiles a stunning anthology of literary short fiction with T.C. Boyle, Emma Cline and others.

“If you know exactly what you are going to get from the experience of reading a story, you probably wouldn’t go looking for it; you need, in order to be an open reader of fiction, to be willing. To cast a vote for what you love and then wait for the outcome,” writes Meg Wolitzer in her introduction to this volume.

The Best American Short Stories 2017 casts a vote for and celebrates all that is our country. Here you’ll find a man with a boyfriend and a girlfriend, naval officers trapped on a submarine, a contestant on America’s Funniest Home Videos, and a gay man desperate to be a father—unforgettable characters waiting for an outcome, burning with stories to tell.

The Best American Short Stories 2017 includes entries by T.C. Boyle, Jai Chakrabarti, Emma Cline, Danielle Evans, Lauren Groff, Eric Puchner, Jim Shepard, Curtis Sittenfeld, Jenn Walter and others.

Review: I've bought this collection of short stories every year for more than 20 years and haven't been disappointed. In addition to the great stories that have been selected, I enjoy reading the authors' notes at the end of the book, which describe where they got the inspiration for their stories and other notes. I also love that they choose a different guest editor each year. The editor's introduction is always interesting to read as well. I highly recommend this book (and others in the same series) for anyone who loves short stories and good writing.

Review: With the exception of the self-serving introduction by the guest editor, I thought the stories were amazing! I have read this series for what seems like forever. This time, however, I was annoyed before I even began the first story, due to the need for the guest editor to share her political views with everyone as if it was a given that others agreed with her. And if she chose any of the stories based upon her “bad surprise” experience than it was actually a good surprise that the stories turned out to be amazing despite her misguided approach to selecting them.

Title: If you like short stories, read this collection!
Review: Many times I have read short stories collections that are so depressing and hopeless or gross that I regret reading them at all. But this 2017 collection has very few of those, and mostly interesting and pithy stories. Definitely not cliche. I am not surprised I liked this collection because the editor, Meg Wolitzer, is one of my favorite writers. Great stories, that don't end in suicide, or obscurity!

Title: A Mixed Bag
Review: Rating short story anthologies is complicated because it is extremely rare that I am going to like every piece. This particular compilation was a very mixed bag. There were three stories (Gabe Dove, Let’s Go to the Videotape, and Ancient Rome) that I absolutely loved, four stories I did not finish and the remainder were between two and four stars. This was not by any means one of the best compilations, but they are so subjective that I go into them expecting some disappointment. I consistently read Best American anthologies because it is a great way to get introduced to writers I would normally not read. Therefore, I always get something out of the books, which make them worth reading year after year.

Title: Great collection. All the stories are good.
Review: I read these American Best Story collections yearly. Most years about half the stories leave me cold and wondering on what basis they could possibly have been chosen. In this 2017 collection I thoroughly enjoyed every story.

Title: Annual Delight
Review: Annually these anthologies bring us the best short stories -- and again what a delight! I don't read it straight through but save the work for those shorter times (waiting for a train, sitting in a doctor's office, etc) when I want good narrative but also some level of resolution (or at least reasonable development of a situation).
